Description First edition. Original blue grey boards, with paper label to the spine. Gift inscription ‘To the Editor of the Literary Gazette’ to the front end paper. The first (pale grey) end paper has been removed. With 90 wood engravings after Holbein by John and Mary Byfield. Also enclosed is a loose 2 leaf sheet of adverts for Pickering’s publications.
Note The Literary Gazette was founded by publisher Henry Colburn. An influential literary magazine at this time, it was edited by the Scottish journalist William Jerdan. It closed in 1863.

Condition The boards are in good clean condition, but the paper label to the spine is somewhat darkened. Spotting and foxing to the end papers and a little light spotting. Overall a decent copy though.
