Description 1st Edition. Limited to 500 copies. 250 by 210mm (9¾ by 8¼ inches). Heavy, laid paper with rough cut edges. A Roll of Honour for the Wykehamists (Members of Winchester College) from the First World War. Each of the 110 pupils who were recorded here are accorded two pages. One gives a brief biography of their lives, lineage and how they met their death. The second shows a large tipped in sepia photograph of each, in their uniform. Naturally each of the boys / men became officers - each is a Captain, a Lieutenant or a Second Lieutenant.
Provenance This is the fourth and final volume of this work. The volumes were: V. 1 Containing the names of those who entered the School from 1870 to 1897; V. 2 Containing the names of those who entered the School from 1898 to 1904; V. 3 Containing the names of those who entered the School from 1905 to 1908; V 4 Containing the names of those who entered the School from 1909 to 1913 2488 members of the Winchester College community served in the armed forces during World War I. This figure includes teaching staff, Quiristers (younger boys who sing in the chapel choir), and pupils (known as Wykehamists). 513 died, serving predominantly in the army. The total number of boys in the school, in each year between 1914 and 1918, was no more than 450. Effectively, Winchester College lost a generation of young men to the Great War.
