Manuscript with 11 Recipes for Curing Maladies in Horses
1820. A single leaf 12" x 71/2" closely written on both sides in a neat (and surprisingly literate) hand. Comprising of 11 recipes to cure horses of various maladies, including poultices, to cure bad sight, curing surfit, to reduce swellings, and one "for a quitter" presumably to enhance stamina in a race (which seems mainly to contain alcohol)! Date is taken from the book in which the document was found, and which has marginalia in the same hand. An interesting insight into the owner's approach to equine care in the early nineteenth century. The edges of the page are a touch nicked and have some small tears. To the centre, is a strong crease, and a small area of loss to the middle where the page has been folded. Slightly darkened. Nevertheless, in sound condition. 310 x 190 mm (12¼ x 7½ inches).
