Geneva Bible; With Tomson's revised New Testament & Junius' Revelation. preceded by the Book of Common Prayer.
London: By the Deputies of Christopher Barker, 1633. A very nice copy of Barker's edition of the Geneva Bible. Complete. Old Testament in two parts, New Testament, Metrical Psalms. With the engraved title pages and all other engravings and cuts as outlined in Darlow & Moule. This is a difficult item to correctly date, D&M devoted pages to it. Having compared the lines we concur "The whole investigation seems to show that these editions of the Geneva-Tomson were published at different times in Amsterdam and Dort, and adopted afterwards by Barker, who affixed the date 1599 because this was a well known and popular edition." (p117) This copy states it was printed in 1599. It most closely collates with "Lea Wilson's No 5 of this series" As with most copies listed, the Apocrypha is listed in the contents, but not present. Some marginalia, with a family account of a marriage and ten children born between 1759 and 1779. The book of Common prayer is a nice copy, with some signatures to the title page and end papers. Contains the Almanac, proper lessons etc: it is followed by another copy of the Psalms. (Collected by Thomas Sternhold & John Hopkins). The binding is a solid, if unexciting full leather binding, a little rubbed, and with the leather clasps now gone. The leather label to the spine (fairly recent) states "book of Common Prayer". A little darkening and some marks consistent with age, but overall in very good condition. A leaf of the feast days for 1757 has been laid into the rear inside board.
230 by 180mm (9 by 7 inches).
Book of Common Prayer: A-H6; Old Testament: *4, A-Z8, &-&6. (1-190 one one side of leaf only so 380), Second part: Aa-Qq8 (1-127, so 254). New Testament: Aaa-Qqq (1-121 so 242), Brief table of the interpretation of proper names: Qqq2-Rrr4, The Booke of Psalmes; A-G8 ([x], -93, [x] (forme of prayers, and table of 1st lines)).
