Vue d'optique An inside View of the Rotundo in London Caff. Vue intérieure de la rotonde ou du Public Caffé à Londres
London: 1760. Copper engraving hand coloured with watercolour. The Rotunda was in Ranelagh Gardens, in what were public pleasure gardens located in Chelsea, then just outside London. Originally designed to be viewed through a zograscope. Title in both English and French. 25 x 39 cm (image); 33 x 48 cm (sheet). A zograscope is an optical device for magnifying flat images, as the shape of the lens enhanced the sense of the depth shown in the picture. The precursor to 3D images! These were very fashionable in the late 18th century.
