Benjamin Constant talks about his studies at the University of Edinburgh, where he met the British philosopher and politician James Mackintosh, as well as the Scottish historian Malcolm Laing. He mentions his stays in Paris with the couple of writers Amélie and Jean Baptiste Antoine Suard, his brief meeting with the future wife of Emmanuel de Pastoret, and details the beginnings of his relationship with Isabelle de Charrière.
