The covers are in good, clean condition, with a little marking and small closed tears only. Inside, the plates are in very good condition, apart from the final one, which was clearly used as a poster, and has tape residue to the edges. This work is part of Speybrouck's Flemish Nationalist (rather than Roman Catholic) output, and is very much in his style. Vlaanderen is mijn ziel is a poetic expression of deep devotion to Flanders, its culture, and its identity. This phrase originates from the work of Albrecht Rodenbach, a prominent Flemish poet and nationalist. The full verse reads: Mijn Vlaanderen is mijn ziel, mijn leven, het doel van mijn streven: mijn leven voor Vlaanderen en Vlaanderen voor God, o mocht ik dat winnende sneven! This translates to: My Flanders is my soul, my life, the goal of my striving: my life for Flanders and Flanders for God, oh, may I die victorious! The poem reflects Rodenbach's commitment to the Flemish Movement and his vision of a strong connection between personal identity, religious faith, and dedication to Flanders. It became emblematic of the Flemish cultural and nationalist awakening in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This gives the date (the work is undated) as 1957. This was the year after Speybrouck's death, so may have been a tribute work, although its style is more pre war. Jozef Speybrouck (1891-1956) was a prominent Flemish graphic artist and illustrator active in the early 20th century. He was known for his contributions to the Art Deco movement and his distinctive sober and highly stylized linework. A scarce item, we have found no others for sale, and no auction records.
