The captions and text are tri-lingual. Primarily in Italian (ie within the image) there is an English and French text alongside. These are a little darkened, and have several small closed tears to the cover edges. Internally clean and tidy, but with a little darkening to the page edges throughout. The sheets are presented half intentionally unopened, (with the inner part of each double sheet blank). A remarkable publication that recounts the experience of imprisonment in a concentration camp, conveyed not only through text but, more significantly, through the extensive collection of drawings and cartoons produced by the painter and internee Alessandro Berretti. These visual works merge documentary realism with a notable undercurrent of humour, a mode through which the artist sought a degree of psychological distance from the oppressive circumstances of captivity. The volume is organised into three principal sections: The Stations of the Cross; Captivity Seen in a Moment of Good Humour (featuring colour cartoons); and Snapshots of the Concentration Camp (caricatures).
