London: Frederick Warne and Co. and New York: Scribner, Welford, and Armstrong, 1870. First edition. Hardback. Original blue decorated cloth. Boards are darkened, and rubbed at edges. The gilt design and lettering has been slightly rubbed away. Slight splitting to the bottom of the front hinge. The inside board shows signs of having been reinforced at some point. Pages and plates are in good, but slightly darkened condition, with a few foxing spots. Seccombe is referred to as Captain (in later editions he becomes Major or Lieutenant Colonel) to the title page and blind stamped to the front board. With alphabetical descriptions and illustrations from designs by the author. Printed in colours by Kronheim. Complete with 24 full-page colour plates. Internally, blank pages in between illustrations. 28 leaves of text + 2pp adverts. 270 x 230 mm (10¾ x 9 inches). Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 4070676 and dating has been obtained from here. Légère déchirure au bas de la charnière avant. Le plat intérieur montre des signes d'avoir été renforcé à un moment donné. Les pages et les planches sont en bon état, mais légèrement noircies, avec quelques taches de rousseur. Seccombe est appelé capitaine (dans les éditions ultérieures, il devient major ou lieutenant-colonel) sur la page de titre et estampillé à froid sur la couverture avant. Avec des descriptions alphabétiques et des illustrations d'après les dessins de l'auteur. Imprimé en couleurs par Kronheim. Complet avec 24 planches en couleurs pleine page.
