Paris: unknown. A French tourist souvenir. Undated but circa 1890, comprising a burgundy decorated folder (some chips and tears to creases now repaired and strengthened). Inside are 12 anonymous photographs of Paris. Nice clean silver gelatin original photographs. Each 210 x 270 mm (8¼ x 10¾ inches). No information about photographer or photo studio. Reverse is blank. Some of these views have been named and numbered in the plate, so it would seem that the purchaser could choose their 12 favourites from a selection. Photographs comprise: a view of the city (Eiffel Tower in the background); The Eiffel Tower close up; a river cruise on the Seine; Avenue de L'Opera; Versailles; Luxembourg Senat; l'Opera; la Madeleine; Place de la Concorde; Notre Dame; Arc de Triomphe; Champs Elysees. The photographs are in good clean condition with no tears, a few have light creasing to them due to the thin photographic paper. Un souvenir touristique français. Totnes: James Cauty: 2007. First Edition. Limited Edition Print on 315 gsm archival paper. Edition of 21 stamped, and initialled in pencil with AP (which probably stands for Artist's Proof). The Gift of Life, OMK Page Edition. 'Operation Magic Kingdom' was a billboard and street poster campaign in London (2007) against the Iraq war. This was also released as stamps and prints. OMK blind stamped and hand numbered in pencil to front. Has official CNPD red stamp on verso. With 4 binding holes in the left hand margin. Dimensions: 35,8 cm x 30.5cm. Excellent condition. Currently protected in archival film. James (Jimmy) Cauty, was formerly a musician with the band 'The Orb', and was a member of 'KLF'. More recently, he has been an artist, creating works of dissent, and working alongside artists such as Banksy and Billy Childish. He has been involved in Steve Lowe's L-13 Light Industrial workshop. He created the gift shop at Banksy's 'Dismaland'. His work also toured as part of the ADP (Aftermath Dislocation Principle) Riot Tour.

Paris: N/A, 1910. A collection of 55 original pen and ink sketches, drafts or early versions of book illustrations. All are initialled M.L. and have been attributed to Maurice Leloir (1857-1940). He was a prolific book illustrator, and his illustration work is certainly in a similar style. Dating is based on when he was most active. The drawings are numbered 1-37 then 42-59 (so presumably missing four from a run). We have been unable to find which book they were intended for, so I suspect they were designs for an unpublished edition. They look almost as if they are for two different works, as one seems to be set in mid 19th Century France, and the second much earlier. The first part involves a young man being cast adrift from a boat, who lands in France and travels slowly to Paris, where there is then fighting (seems to be the 1848 barricades). Victor Hugo is written on the back of one, so perhaps some sketches for Les Miserables, but only the barricades seem to fit with the plot. Towards the end of the sketches are a few of a young man climbing a two with sword in his mouth, rescuing children from burning towers etc. These feel as if they are intended to portray an earlier period. All the sketches are accomplished, and in ink, with some white corrections to the pages. They are all on stiff card which is 32cm x 25cm sized (and somewhat browned with age), and have been drawn to be half page etc. Some small marks and edgewear, but nothing to diminish the overall effect. A few small manuscript notes to indicate chapter / placement. A very attractive collection of original pieces. 320 by 250mm (12½ by 9¾ inches).

Tous portent les initiales M.L. et ont été attribués à Maurice Leloir (1857-1940). Ce dernier était un illustrateur de livres prolifique, et son travail d'illustration est certainement dans un style similaire. La datation est basée sur la période où il était le plus actif. Les dessins sont numérotés de 1 à 37 puis de 42 à 59 (il manque donc probablement quatre exemplaires d'un tirage). Nous n'avons pas été en mesure de déterminer à quel livre ils étaient destinés, et je soupçonne donc qu'il s'agit de dessins pour une édition non publiée. On a l'impression qu'il s'agit de deux ouvrages différents, car l'un semble se dérouler au milieu du XIXe siècle en France, et l'autre beaucoup plus tôt. La première partie met en scène un jeune homme jeté à la dérive d'un bateau, qui atterrit en France et voyage lentement jusqu'à Paris, où se déroulent des combats (qui semblent être les barricades de 1848). Victor Hugo est écrit au dos de l'une d'entre elles, ce qui laisse supposer qu'il s'agit d'esquisses pour Les Misérables, mais seules les barricades semblent correspondre à l'intrigue. Vers la fin des esquisses, on trouve quelques dessins d'un jeune homme escaladant une tour avec une épée dans la bouche, sauvant des enfants de tours en flammes, etc. On a l'impression qu'elles sont destinées à dépeindre une période antérieure. Toutes les esquisses sont réalisées à l'encre, avec quelques corrections en blanc sur les pages. Ils sont tous sur une carte rigide de 32 cm x 25 cm (quelque peu brunie par l'âge), et ont été dessinés pour être en demi-page, etc. Quelques petites marques et usures sur les bords, mais rien qui ne diminue l'effet d'ensemble. Quelques petites notes manuscrites pour indiquer le chapitre / l'emplacement. Une collection très attrayante de pièces originales. 320 x 250 mm

Brusselles: Librairie Historique-Artistic, 1845. A collection of eight hand coloured lithographs by Duverger and Clerman after Jacques Charles Bar's illustrations. This set are from a Spanish edition. There is no text other than the titles (In french / Spanish / Latin), but the 8 plates are each under home made passe-partout. The lithographs comprise both members of the Religious and members of the Catholic Chivalric orders: An Archbishop; A Jesuit; A Carthusian nun in ceremonial dress, A Chierigo Minor; gran croce dele ordine di Carlo III (A member of the Order of the Grand Cross of Charles III; A cavalier of the Order of Calatrava; An Alejano / Alexien; A Religious from the Order of the Visitation. The plates have some edgewear / chipping and creasing to the edges, but this is hidden by the passe partout. The lithographed sheets are 270 by 185mm (10¾ by 7¼ inches). The passe partout is 300mm x 240mm.

Paris: Thierry Fréres, 1840. Pale blue boards, with buckram spine. Illustration of a Gothic chapel to the front board. The boards are a little marked and stained, particularly to the back board. Inside are 8 lithographs and an estate plan of Fraidaigue (or Fraid-augue). Fraidaigue (Route de Morges 21). This was a country house in the form of a neo-Gothic chapel built in 1831 for the Dutch-born general Hendryk van Oyen, who previously owned La Gordanne near Perroy. This building was replaced in 1904 by a wealthy villa designed by architects Alphonse Laverrière and Eugène Monod. The lithographs and map are in excellent condition. with a little foxing to the borders only. The plates are drawn from nature by Zélie Vachon. They are deliniated by Jean-Jacques Champin (1796 - 1860), and lithographed by Thierry frères of Paris. Copies of the lithographs are held in the Musée d'art et d'histoire de la Ville de Genève. Here they are dated to the first half of the Nineteenth Century. The house/ chapel was located just outside St Prex, on the Geneva-Lausanne road (now Route de Morges). 9 leaves, printed to recto only. One folding. 350 x 290 mm (13¾ x 11½ inches).

London: G. Nicholson, 1802. The bound collection comprises 9 pamphlets with poems and essays, all published in the same format by G. Nicholson. These are published as part of "The Literary Miscellany: or Extracts and Selections Classical and Scientific." Each has an engraved title page, and an engraving on the final page. White hardback (paper covered boards). Leather label to spine with gilt title "Poems 1" which implies a second unknown collection. The white boards are a little marked and darkened, but still presentable. Internally slightly darkened, but overall in very good condition. To each of the items, is a penciled number on the title, presumably giving a publication number (?) The advert to the rear of the book indicates that around 100 such pamphlets were produced (or intended). Text in English. The collection comprises: La collection reliée comprend 9 brochures avec des poèmes et des essais, tous publiés dans le même format par G. Nicholson. Ceux-ci sont publiés dans le cadre de "The Literary Miscellany: or Extracts and Selections Classical and Scientific". Chacun a une page de titre gravée et une gravure sur la dernière page. Couverture cartonnée blanche (planches recouvertes de papier). Etiquette en cuir au dos avec titre doré « Poèmes 1 » qui sous-entend un deuxième recueil inconnu. Les planches blanches sont un peu marquées et assombries, mais toujours présentables. Intérieur légèrement noirci, mais dans l'ensemble en très bon état. Pour chacun des articles, est un numéro au crayon sur le titre, donnant vraisemblablement un numéro de publication (?) L'annonce à l'arrière du livre indique qu'environ 100 de ces brochures ont été produites (ou prévues). Texte en anglais. La collection comprend :

The plates with decorative animal illustrations by J. Tookey after J. Ibbetson. Half calf binding with brown boards. The boards are somewhat stained. The binding is rubbed to the corners and edges. The gilt decoration and titles to the spine are still attractive though. Has the ownership signature of G. Goldney, Buckfield to the front end paper. Small bookshop stamp of Paul A Struck of New York to the inside board. Some of the pages and plates have light water staining (a couple there is more distinct staining), and there is light foxing in places. Pages a touch darkened. Overall, a nice copy though. Unpaginated. Julius Caesar Ibbetson (1759-1817), was a Yorkshire painter noted for his rural scenes and depictions of animals. This is the first printing of an important work of natural history, which was re-printed in 1848/9. 330 by 260mm (13 by 10¼ inches).
