Clean tidy print, with slight untidiness to cut edge (outside the black ruled frame). Fractional browning to edges. Mount is clean and neat. Issued as number 174, in a series entitled: Political sketches - Issued in 5 volumes. (Daniel O'Connell; Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey) Description is: Lord Grey is endeavouring to allure Mr. O'Connell by the offer of a place. The inscription of Courier on his rod, intimates that the offer was made in a paragraph, put out by way of a feeler, in the evening newspaper bearing that title. It is well known that the fish did not bite. This from Mclean. Illustrative Key to the Political Sketches of H.B. From No.1 to No. 600. Conforms to the National Portrait Gallery copy: NPG D41109.

Deep green patterned felt covered boards. A little bumping to the corners only. Clean and tidy boards. A touch of nicking to the head of the spine. Internally a fine copy, with no significant defects. Colour imaginary portrait of Baudelaire. Black and green vignette to the title page and similar to 135. The 15 beautiful full page illustrations, vignettes and historiated initials are in black and white. A lovely copy. Text in English. Fabulous layout / space and evocative Art Deco stylised illustrations. 142 [2] pages.

Les Fleurs du Mal includes nearly all of Baudelaire's poetry, written in 1840 and ending with his death in August 1867. "Born in England, Egan was educated in South Africa. After working as a bank clerk, he became sports cartoonist on the Rand Daily Mail in Johannesburg. By the time he returned to England in 1926, his satirical bent was well established. In London, he first became known as a draughtsman and also made his name as a writer. He used many media including oil, watercolour, chalk, scraperboard, gouache and pencil, but mostly he used brush or pen. As his skill increased, he used solid blacks instead of cross-hatching - he wrote in Epitaph (1943) that he used "Black and white with no linear half-tones to confuse the issue, no photographic realism to frustrate the design." Egan's work has often been compared to that of Aubrey Beardsley, but in Egan's case, the feeling of decadence is a reflection of his disgust - he wrote that "What I do is in revulsion - to shock by the power of satire!"". (Alan Horne, The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators, pp.175-176).

Paris: N/a, 1880. A beautiful tryptych in padded leather, with a golden coloured metal embossed plate of Our Lady des Victoires (church in Paris). To the left and right of the brass panel is a manuscript hand in black and red, with the Marian prayer of Abbé Perryve. This is hold the line "Holy Virgin, have pity on those who loved each other and who were separated." It is appropriate that this folding travelling prayer is there to bring comfort to the travellers away from their loved ones. The panel folds and is closed with a push stud clasp. Beautiful blind stamped and embossed outside. In excellent condition inside and out. There is a touch of marking to the manuscript lines. Fractional rubbing to the covers. Overall a beautiful piece. Abbé Perryve was a Roman Catholic priest, who died age 34 in 1865. He wrote a number of popular prayers and other ecclesiastical works. 12.5cm x 8cm closed. 12.5cm x 18cm open.

. Un beau tryptyque en cuir matelassé, avec une plaque en métal doré de Notre-Dame des Victoires (église de Paris). A gauche et à droite du panneau en laiton se trouve une main manuscrite en noir et rouge, avec la prière mariale de l'abbé Perryve. Celle-ci tient la ligne "Sainte Vierge, ayez pitié de ceux qui se sont aimés et qui ont été séparés". Il est tout à fait approprié que cette prière de voyage pliante soit là pour apporter du réconfort aux voyageurs éloignés de leurs proches. Le panneau se plie et se ferme à l'aide d'un fermoir à bouton poussoir. L'extérieur est joliment estampé et gaufré à l'aveugle. En excellent état à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur. Il y a une touche de marquage sur les lignes manuscrites. Les couvertures sont légèrement frottées. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'une belle pièce. L'abbé Perryve était un prêtre catholique romain, décédé à l'âge de 34 ans en 1865. Il a écrit un certain nombre de prières populaires et d'autres ouvrages ecclésiastiques. 12,5 cm x 8 cm fermé. 12.5cm x 18cm ouvert.

Amsterdam: for the widow of Joannes van Someren, 1682. Four engraved plates which were used to illustrate Tavernier's 'Les Six Voyages'. Each is loosely attached to a paper backing sheet. Slight darkening and with foxing, but overall are in good condition. The plates include a wizard bringing a small tree to life; a frantic fakir stabbing 13 Dutch sailors to death; a King waiting with bow and arrow, ready to kill a tied up Englishman; and an unlabelled plate, which shows thieves being bricked up in punishment; although strangely, one has been given his pipe to smoke! 170 x 140 mm (6¾ x 5½ inches). Quatre planches gravées qui ont servi à illustrer Les Six Voyages de Tavernier. Chacun est attaché de manière lâche à une feuille de support en papier. Légères assombrissements et rousseurs, mais l'ensemble est en bon état. Les plaques comprennent un sorcier donnant vie à un petit arbre ; un fakir frénétique poignardant à mort 13 marins hollandais ; un roi attendant avec un arc et des flèches, prêt à tuer un Anglais ligoté ; et une plaque sans étiquette, qui montre des voleurs en train de se faire punir ; bien qu'étrangement, on ait donné sa pipe à fumer ! 170 x 140 mm

Berlin: Herbert Stuffer Verlag, 1935. Four large sheets of Stuffer's Bilderbogen. In total, there were only 12 issued. Initially in a two part version for children to colour (with one colour and one identical but in black and white). There was also the "Blockausgabe" which offered the sheets in a large format and full colour edition. The sheets offered here are as follows: #1 Kapitän Knackbrot gründet einen Zirkus (text by Friedrich Böer with illustration by Werner Bürger). A good, clean copy, with a small closed tear to the left edge. Otherwise in very good condition; #2 Das schöne Heidelberg ( illustration by Andreas Meier, text by E.A. Hermann). A little foxing but otherwise clean, a small closed tear to the left edge of the crease. A little marking to the blank rear. #10 Der Osterhase: (Illustrations by Andreas Meier, words by E.A. Herrmann). A little darkening. A little creasing, and a couple of small closed tears to the left edge. #12 Die sieben Sterne: (words by E.A. Herrmann, illustration by Margarete Kellner). Although clean, the picture has been torn in half at some point, but very neatly repaired (you can only just see the remnant of the tear). Otherwise sound. There is a crease to the centre of each of the plates. These give the impression of never having been bound into a book. 450 by 320mm (17¾ by 12½ inches)

Il y a un pli au centre de chacune des planches. Elles donnent l'impression de n'avoir jamais été reliées dans un livre. 450 x 320 mm.

Normandie: N/A. A lovely water colour / pen and ink album. Undated but circa 1910. Plain white paper covers, with yellow cord tie. Album size 120 x 170 mm (4¾ x 6¾ inches). Contains 11 pen and ink / watercolour drawings, by a skilled artist. Most of the images are architectural or of nature. Generally to the edge of the page. All drawn to one side only. One of the leaves has become detached but is still present. A few marks to the paper covers, but internally spotless. There are also two additional sketches, one charcoal on paper, the other ink on very thin wood. Un bel album aquarelle / plume et encre. Sans date mais vers 1910. Couvertures en papier uni blanc, avec cordon jaune. Contient 11 dessins à la plume et à l'encre / aquarelle, par un artiste qualifié. La plupart des images sont architecturales ou de la nature. Généralement au bord de la page. Tous dessinés d'un seul côté. Une des feuilles s'est détachée mais est toujours présente. Quelques marques sur les couvertures de papier, mais intérieur impeccable. Il y a aussi deux esquisses supplémentaires, l'une au fusain sur papier, l'autre à l'encre sur bois très fin. Taille de l'album 120 x 170 mm

Paris: C-L- de Moncade, 1910. An art revue / magazine, with profuse high quality illustrations. Printed with some French and some English content. Each copy of this "Specially printed and private edition" was a limited edition for a subscriber list. The name of the subscriber was printed in gold to the cover. This copy was that of Georges Aubry, "One of the most active and influential figures in the development of a market for modern painting in Paris." Clean and tidy pages, with a clean (but slightly darkened) cover. There are a couple of closed tears to the spine / front hinge of the fragile wrapper. Première édition. Une revue d'art / magazine, avec des illustrations abondantes de haute qualité. Imprimé avec du contenu en français et en anglais. Chaque exemplaire de cette « édition spéciale et privée » était une édition limitée pour une liste d'abonnés. Le nom de l'abonné était imprimé en or sur la couverture. Cet exemplaire était celui de Georges Aubry, « L'une des figures les plus actives et les plus influentes dans le développement d'un marché de la peinture moderne à Paris ». Pages propres et bien rangées, avec une couverture propre (mais légèrement assombrie). Il y a quelques déchirures fermées au dos / charnière avant de la fragile couverture. George Aubry, actif à Paris de C 1910 jusqu'aux années 1950. Il a tenu une place à la frontière entre le marchandage et la collection, développant l'art moderne comme un domaine digne d'investissement. Dans les années 1920, il organise plusieurs ventes à Drouot, dont la vente de sa propre collection en 1924.
