London: Printed by T. Bensley, for E. and S. Harding, 1797. Hardback, covered in marbled paper covers with leather label to the spine. The preface is dated March 1796, and the pagination conforms to the first edition, but the date to the title page has been very neatly cut out. We are a little confused by this copy. The pagination is correct, and every page number is present as it should be - but there are 14 engraved head pieces by Thomas Stothard, and 8 engraved tail pieces (not 14 as other 1st edition copies mention). The is also no full page engraving. So this may be a second edition without engraving? The label is darkened, and the edge of the spine a little chipped, exposing the paper beneath. Still attractive though. A few light foxing spots, but the engravings are good clean impressions.
The first section is of 'Elfin Eclogues', featuring characters from A Midsummer Night's Dream, with the remainder of the volume containing odes on various subjects, including: 'Music', 'Morning', 'Evening', 'the Glow-Worm', 'Love' and 'Youth'. vii, [1], 112 pp. 175 x 100 mm (7 x 4 inches).

London: E. Moxon, Son & Co ltd. Two volumes (both first editions 1872) bound together in a beautiful dark blue full leather binding with gilt decoration to the boards and the spine. The binding is slightly rubbed to the edges, with slight cracking to the bottom edge of the spine. but otherwise in very good condition. The binding is signed "Bound for George Rutland, Newcastle, Upon Tyne" We cannot find a binder of this name, but there was a publisher of (primarily) angling and fishing books based in Newcastle in this period, so it is presumably done for him. Inside, there is light to moderate foxing to many of the pages. Rear end papers have a darkening to the edges. This volume includes both the "Poems illustrated" and the subsequent volume "again illustrated" Pagination: viii, 109, [i]. vii, [i], 180 pp.

Köln: Du Mont Schauberg / Deutscher Bücherbund, 1960. A nice copy of this stylish photobook. Hardback boards illustrated by a Picasso illustration. These are a little darkened and with slight splitting to the spine, but still attractive. The text pages, in French and german, are somewhat darkened to the edges. There is a Picasso title page which is either stuck neatly to the edge of he colophon page or is in a French fold. We are unsure which, but there is not text within the pages. Introduction by Jean Cocteau. After the introductory pages are 62 full page photographs on glossy photographic paper. These in excellent condition. All in all, a decent copy. This edition published for the members of the Deutscher Bucherbund. First edition thus. 325 x 245 mm (12¾ x 9¾ inches).

Elles sont un peu assombries et le dos est légèrement fendu, mais elles restent attrayantes. Les pages de texte, en français et en allemand, sont quelque peu assombries sur les bords. Il y a une page de titre de Picasso qui est soit collée proprement au bord de la page de colophon, soit dans un pli français. Nous ne savons pas laquelle, mais il n'y a pas de texte dans les pages. Introduction de Jean Cocteau. Après les pages d'introduction se trouvent 62 photographies pleine page sur papier photographique brillant. Celles-ci sont en excellent état. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'un bon exemplaire. Cette édition a été publiée pour les membres du Deutscher Bucherbund. Première édition donc. 325 x 245 mm

A nice copy of this artist monograph. comprising a cover and seven page signatures (loose in French folds). 4 original lithographs by Miotte (including cover), three of which are colour, double page works. These were original for this issue. The soft covers are pretty clean, but the paper spine has split, and has now been repaired / reinforced with archival tape. Inside is in excellent, original condition, with just a touch of marking to it. The article alongside the text is entitled "Poétique de Jean Miotte" by Marcelin Pleynet. A nice copy. 28 pages. 360 by 280mm (14¼ by 11 inches).

Prague: Antonín Víte, 1906. Original cardboard cover with embossed pale blue cover title and textile hasps. First and only edition of this visually charming, yet as regards the story also pertinently disturbing bibliophile edition, with 33 full-paged illustrations after indian ink or pencil drawings by Czech symbolist painter and printmaker Emil Holárek (1867-1919) after a fairy tale by Jaroslav Kvapil. The story is about a nymphet, who wears herself out between various institutions of state and society and the wickedness of their protagonists, finally ending up as a supposed culprit on the scaffold. The reproductions of Holáreks drawings are skilfully arranged by the Prague based printmaker Antonín Vítek by contrasting them with a ochre surface and ornamental frames and elegantly printed on cream machine-mould paper. Apart from minor wear to the cover and a few foxing stains inside, present is a very clean copy of this attractive bibliophile publication.

Holárek's unique and to some extent irritating style is marked by 'a sombre pessimism'. He embodied a sense of sarcastic moralism in most of his series, reflecting on a deep tragic and romantic conception. Except for his connection to [Max] Klinger [whom he met when studying in Munich] he never allied with any school, nor did he have any followers. (Urban).

Magnum / Abbas Photos Association, 2020. A Magnum square print, by Abbas Attar, better known by his mononym Abbas. Abbas was an Iranian photographer known for his photojournalism. This particular image came to symbolise apartheid in South Africa to audiences across the world. It shows a white colonel from the black police academy in his uniform with his trainees behind him. The trainees are lined up behind him in rows, wearing nothing but shorts and plimsols. Each year Magnum produce a limited run of photographs in this square print format. They are limited not by number, but by the length of time they are on sale. Photo in perfect condition. 150 x 150 mm (6 x 6 inches).

A note on the verso says: In 1999, I met the director of this police academy again, this time in the B&B he ran with his family in Stellenbosch. A television channel had sought him out for a program on the photos that marked our time. It was not the uniform-and-stick Colonel that I found, it was the retired police general Stephanus Jacobus Malan. "This picture was taken from my South Africa story, originally published in 1978 by newspapers and magazines around the world; it became one of the symbols of apartheid. A photographer friend informed me later that someone from the South African Embassy in Paris told him that this photo did them more harm than an armed division of enemies. It's the greatest compliment a photographer can receive. Police academy. Hamanskraal, South Africa. 1978. The man whose face had become, over the years, and defiantly, an icon of apartheid, was an affable, courteous man with exquisite hospitality. What was the moral responsibility of the photographer? I had not photographed the man in 1978, but the uniform that personified the apartheid regime." From the photographer's own notes.

This is the Second Edition of this work, first published the previous year. The whole contains a stiff (and anonymous) hardback portfolio folder, which holds a 24 page introductory booklet, a stiff card title page and 71 colour or black and white card caricature leaves. Believed fully complete. Conforms to OCLC Number / Unique Identifier: 829888778. All the elements are in good, clean condition, with a touch of darkening to the pages only. A little edge wear to the folder. The cartoons are mainly attacking the west, and the introduction acknowledges that they follow a "Common advancing front with Soviet Caricature." where the enemy is "The enemy of Peace" mainly identified with the USA. 21, [3] pp., [1], [71] pp. 295 x 210 mm (11½ x 8¼ inches).

Indre-Loire: Service Hydraulique, 1853. A folding manuscript map / cadastral plan of the commune of Ports and the surrounding area. 8 pages folded and pasted together, drawn to one side only. The first pate is the text / permissions and authorisations signed and dated (with official stamp) by individuals involved with the project. ( 4 different individuals have written comments and signed the plan). This seems to have been drawn up to accompany a cleaning / repair project for the roads and bridges of the area. Attractive hand coloured plan of the area, with extra section added on paper (see photos) showing the whole of the commune of Ports, including sections of the river Vienne. The plan is drawn on tracing paper / glassine, pasted to stiff card. This is a little darkened, but without significant flaws. Nice detailing and quality of work. Despite the title, there are no bridges in this commune. 290 by 1820mm (11½ by 71¾ inches).

Le plan est dessiné sur du papier calque / glassine, collé sur une carte rigide. Ce dernier est un peu assombri, mais sans défauts significatifs. Les détails et la qualité du travail sont agréables.
