As Ballett und Pantomime was produced not long after the end of WW1, Schnackenberg attracted attention with his creations. His figures and drawings make it clear that in dance and pantomime, the people felt they could reclaim the right to rejoice in the beauty of the body, in animated movement, in colour, in costume, in performance. Tipped on images size: 285 x 230 mm (11¼ x 9 inches). Whole sheet, including margins: 510 x 390 mm (20 x 15¼ inches). Sold under passe partout with colour of image picked out in detail to the edge. Amsterdam: Het Centraal Comité voor Oostenrijksche Arbeiderskinderen in Nederland, 1922. First edition. Nice copy of this collection of 11 full-page lithographic illustrations. They depict the misery in Meidling and Floridsdorf (both suburbs of Vienna). Introduction (In Dutch) by Edo Fimmen, the left-wing trade unionist. Albert Hahn Jr. was a socialist cartoonist and poster artist from the Netherlands. Soft paper covers with sewn binding. Nicking to the edges, and slight splitting to the edges. The covers are quite clean but a touch darkened. Internally clean throughout with the top edge darkened. Evocative caricatures showing suffering of industrial workers, particularly amongst the young. Accompanied by a letter from one of the 50 sub committees of the Comité voor Oostenrijksche Arbeiderskinderen in Nederland. The committee was created by the Social Democratic Workers Party (SDAP), in cooperation with the International Confederation of Trade Unions and the Dutch Confederation of Trade Unions in 1920. Following the First World war there was much poverty in Austria. The committee arranged for thousands of malnourished children to travel to the Netherlands and stay with foster families for up to 12 weeks to regain their strength. 320 by 250mm (12½ by 9¾ inches).

Accompagné d'une lettre de l'un des 50 sous-comités du Comité voor Oostenrijksche Arbeiderskinderen in Nederland. Ce comité a été créé par le Parti ouvrier social-démocrate (SDAP), en coopération avec la Confédération internationale des syndicats et la Confédération néerlandaise des syndicats en 1920. Après la Première Guerre mondiale, l'Autriche a connu une grande pauvreté. Amsterdam: Wed. Aart Dirksz. Oossaan, 1694. A lovely copper plate engraving of the Wester Kerk. Printed on two sheets, pasted together. A large print, believed to be from the large paper copy of the Beschryvinge van Amsterdam, Commelin's seminal work. Good clean impression on clean heavy laid paper. The paper holds a watermark of three crescent moons. This is often seen in Islamic printing, and was probably from Italian paper stock of the mid to late eighteenth century. Image size 26cm x 34cm. Sheet size 43cm x 50.5cm. A lovely uncoloured example of this engraving. First Edition

Une grande impression, que l'on croit provenir de la grande copie papier de la Beschryvinge van Amsterdam, l'ouvrage fondamental de Commelin. Bonne impression propre sur un papier vergé épais et propre. Le papier contient un filigrane de trois croissants de lune. Ce type de filigrane est fréquent dans l'imprimerie islamique et provient probablement d'un papier italien du milieu ou de la fin du dix-huitième siècle. Taille de l'image 26cm x 34cm. Taille de la feuille 43cm x 50.5cm. Un bel exemple non coloré de cette gravure.

Hardback in red buckram, with gilt title and decoration to front board and spine. Boards are slightly darkened and lightly soiled. Back board more so, as it has a dark patch to the lower portion; this does not affect the interior. Spine is rubbed. Inside FFEP has a neat ink hand written prize dedication from a Protestant church in North Holland. Tiny portion of top right corner of the end paper has been neatly cut out. Pages are aged at edges, from handling. There are some signs of handling / finger marks inside, but overall the book is in good condition. 136 pp., [4] hand coloured plates, each with tissue guard. Le dos est frotté. L'intérieur de la page de garde comporte une dédicace manuscrite à l'encre d'une église protestante de Hollande du Nord. Une petite partie du coin supérieur droit de la page de garde a été soigneusement découpée. Les pages sont vieillies sur les bords, à cause de la manipulation. Il y a quelques signes de manipulation / marques de doigts à l'intérieur, mais dans l'ensemble le livre est en bon état. 136 p., [4] planches colorées à la main, chacune avec une protection en tissu. A touch of bumping to the corners and rubbing to the spine. A sticker to the front boards shows that this was once the property of the Boots Booklover's library. This is the only library mark. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with a little foxing to the end papers only. Slight darkening to the edges. Some pencilled annotations intermittently (non obtrusive). 316 pages. "A brief account of the history in Christian times of that perverted way of the soul which we call magic, or (on a lower level) witchcraft, and with the reaction against it. there are two authors who have laid the most casual student of the subject under heavy debt - Dr. Montague Summers and the late Dr. Henry Charles Lea. I am not myself convinced either by Dr. Summers belief or by Dr. Lea's contempt" - from the author's preface. Williams began life working in a Methodist bookshop, but quickly progressed to being a poet and author on spiritual themes. He attracted the admiration of Auden, Eliot and Lewis.

Red Boards with black and silver gilt title to spine. 215 x 150 mm (8½ x 6 inches). Very slight bumping to spine and corners. Cover has some small closed tears, rubbing, and edge wear. Overall very good copy that author gave as a gift to friends in March 1969.
Chadwick Hansen made an astonishing claim in this book. He asserted that a few of those accused in Salem were actually guilty, and that witches did practice in Salem, some causing real harm to others.
"There was witchcraft in Salem, and it worked," writes Hansen, who was a former English professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "There was every reason to regard it as a criminal offense."
Belief in witchcraft was far from unique to Salem, Hansen argued; it was endemic to Europe at the time and a constant in the English culture that 17th century New England reflected.
