1903. Four documents concerned with the Paddington Estate in West London. The monks of Westminster had land in Paddington from the 11th Century. After the Reformation, these rested with the Bishop of London. From the late 19th Century, these were gradually sold of through holding companies, the last being sold in the 1980's. These documents comprise: July 1903 - A counterpart licence for 14 Cleveland Square with permissions to renovations and changes to the property. 4 pages. April 1913 - A counterpart licence to add a garage for private motor cars to 7 Chilworth Mews. 3 pages and a large drawn handcoloured architectural plan of the front of the building and ground floor (on glassine). July 1926 - A licence and deed of covenant to turn 40 Cleveland Square into 3 maisonettes. 12 pages. plus a large folding architectural plan of the proposed changes, with seals and tagged seal. February 1929 - A lease from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners to A. H. Heath for a lease on 110 Westbourne Terrace, Paddington. 6 pages and glassine coloured plan of property. A nice bundle of London related legal documents.

New York: N/A, 1900. A lovely collection of seven ink and water-colour designs by Ledonné, which were part of his submission for the "Designing" certificate from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Together with a printed and embossed certificate from the college. The sheets comprise: "Tuscan Order Cap and Entablature" Nov. 1899; "Doric Order Pedestal and Base" Nov. 1899; "Doric Order Capital and Entablature" Dec. 1899; "Ionic Order Capital and Entablature" Jan. 1900; "Ionic Order Pedestal and Base" Feb. 1900; "Corinthian Order Capital and Entablature" April 1900; and a "Study of Corinthian Temple" Jan. 1901. Each of the sheets is approximately 49 x 37 cm. They are all in good, clean condition, but some have a little marking / foxing to one edge. A touch of creasing to a couple of corners. All are of an excellent standard, and suitable for framing. The Cooper Union was founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper, in New York in 1858 (according to certificate, 1859 according to their website) and still exists today. The certificate, with an attractive engraved vignette of the Great Hall of the college. It is signed by both the director and the president of the college in ink, and has a blind stamped embossed seal. It shows that Ledonné was enrolled in the Free Night School, and presumably in an Architecture School (although this topic was called designing). We can find little about Ledonné. A Frenchman, he was in America between 1899 and 1903, and later returned to France and worked as a draughtsman or architect under the architect Eugené Dr Chifflot (Brother of Jules Léon Chifflot).

Hardback, bound in publisher's russet coloured percaline, with black and gilt titles and embossed design to boards and spine. Letterpress and engraved title page. Each volume is beautifully illustrated with 40 colour chromolithograph plates, complete with tissue guards. (Including the smaller title vignette). The boards are a little rubbed. All edges gilt. There is some light foxing and definite offsetting, but overall good. A fractional lean to some volumes. Published originally in parts between 1864 and 1880 by Longman, under title: The county seats of the noblemen and gentlemen of Great Britain and Ireland; then by D. Paris: S.P, 1933. A attractive water colour of the woods and short of Lége Cap Ferret by Lemasson. The work has been painted onto glassine, which has then been laid onto a proof sheet of the book "Les Églises Fortifiées de la Thiérache." Lemasson provided thirty colour lithographs for this work by Gabriel Hanotaux, celebrating the fortified churches of the Thiérache region (along the French / Belgian border). The painting is nicely coloured and showed a stylised view of the woods, with a figure in the middle ground looking out to sea. This is probably a preliminary sketch for a larger work, as the edges are not neatly finished, and a finished work would be unlikely to have a proof for a book as backing card. The title is written into a dune, and Lemasson liked it so much he signed it twice! Some edgewear and chipping / creasing with closed tears and fractional loss to the edges. An attractive piece. 38cm x 57cm.

Albert Lemasson was a French painter (1892-1982. He was classically trained and entered the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris in 1919. Lemasson specialized for about 25 years mainly in church decoration through frescoes, often working with his brother Paul Lemasson. Besides frescoes, he painted a variety of works including portraits, landscapes, and scenes from his travels in France, Italy, Spain, and Greece using oil, watercolor, ink, and other mediums. He exhibited his works in several galleries in Paris, Nantes, and Bordeaux over many decades.

. Une jolie aquarelle des bois et du court de Lége Cap Ferret par Lemasson. L'œuvre a été peinte sur du papier cristal, qui a ensuite été posé sur une feuille d'épreuve du livre "Les Églises Fortifiées de la Thiérache". Lemasson a fourni trente lithographies en couleurs pour cet ouvrage de Gabriel Hanotaux, célébrant les églises fortifiées de la région de la Thiérache (le long de la frontière franco-belge). Le tableau est joliment coloré et présente une vue stylisée des bois, avec un personnage au centre regardant vers la mer. Il s'agit probablement d'une esquisse préliminaire pour une œuvre plus importante, car les bords ne sont pas soigneusement finis, et il est peu probable qu'une œuvre finie ait une épreuve pour un livre comme carte de soutien. Albert Lemasson était un peintre français (1892-1982). Il a reçu une formation classique et est entré à l'École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris en 1919. Pendant environ 25 ans, Lemasson se spécialise principalement dans la décoration d'églises à l'aide de fresques, travaillant souvent avec son frère Paul Lemasson. Outre les fresques, il a peint des portraits, des paysages et des scènes de ses voyages en France, en Italie, en Espagne et en Grèce à l'huile, à l'aquarelle, à l'encre et dans d'autres médiums. Il a exposé ses œuvres dans plusieurs galeries à Paris, Nantes et Bordeaux pendant plusieurs décennies.

Paris: de Neurdein Fréres, C 1875. First edition. A very nice original albumen image of the hall of mirrors in the Palace of Versaille. A large print: 27.5cm x 42cm. Overall in excellent condition, bar a couple of light creases, and a 3cm closed tear to the bottom edge. There are quite a few photographs of the hall, but this one is identifiable by the double bench arrangement to the left of the print. We can find this in no other photograph. The photograph was also produced as a postcard. Blank, and clean to the verso. As with all albumen images, this is on very thin photographic paper.

. Première édition. Très belle image originale sur papier albuminé de la galerie des glaces du château de Versailles. Un grand tirage : 27.5cm x 42cm. Dans l'ensemble en excellent état, avec quelques plis légers et une déchirure de 3 cm sur le bord inférieur. Il existe de nombreuses photographies de la salle, mais celle-ci est identifiable par la double disposition des bancs à gauche de l'épreuve. Nous ne retrouvons cela sur aucune autre photographie. Cette photographie a également été produite sous forme de carte postale. Elle est vierge et propre au verso. Comme toutes les images à l'albumine, celle-ci est réalisée sur un papier photographique très fin.

Austria: S.P, 1942. First edition. A lovely water colour of an architectural view. It shows a large, classical building, Church like, with fountains in each of the arches and statues in front of the building. Beautifully executed, and signed to the bottom right by Lt Biscop. He identifies himself as prisoner #1838 at Oflag XVII A. He also states that the painting was handed over to the Germans on 29th July 1942. It would seem that Biscop was permitted materials and allowed to paint, if he gave the finished work to his captors. We have not been able to identify the building shown. Given the circumstances in which it was drawn, it may represent an ideal building, rather than an actual place. Oflag XVII-A was a German prisoner of war camp near Edelbach and Döllersheim in present-day Austria. It held mainly French officers captured after the Battle of France and was liberated in May 1945. The camp became known for prisoner education, cultural activity, and escape efforts. It was perhaps in this context that the painter was permitted to spend time painting architectural views. The work states that the painter was a student at Pontienioli Leconte. This would seem to be a reference to the school of fine arts l'atelier Pontrémoli. Established in Paris by Emmanuel PONTRÉMOLI (1865–1956) who taught, and later handed over the studio to André (Alphonse, Léon) Leconte (1894-1966) He took the control of the studio in 1942. There is also a reference to Lablande el Vassao which we have been unable to identify. Blank to verso. The number 162 has been written in a small hand in crayon to the left edge, but without and clue as to its meaning. 600 by 840mm (23½ by 33 inches). Overall in excellent condition, with a touch of minor staining to the top edge.

Elle montre un grand édifice de style classique, ressemblant à une église, avec des fontaines dans chacune des arcades et des statues devant le bâtiment. Magnifiquement exécutée, elle est signée en bas à droite par le lieutenant Biscop. Il s'identifie comme le prisonnier n° 1838 de l'Oflag XVII A. Il précise également que le tableau a été remis aux Allemands le 29 juillet 1942. Il semblerait que Biscop ait eu accès à du matériel et ait été autorisé à peindre, à condition de remettre l'œuvre achevée à ses geôliers. Nous n'avons pas pu identifier le bâtiment représenté. Compte tenu des circonstances dans lesquelles il a été dessiné, il pourrait s'agir d'un édifice idéal, plutôt que d'un lieu réel. L'Oflag XVII-A était un camp de prisonniers de guerre allemand situé près d'Edelbach et de Döllersheim, dans l'actuelle Autriche. Il accueillait principalement des officiers français capturés après la bataille de France et fut libéré en mai 1945. Le camp était réputé pour l'éducation des prisonniers, ses activités culturelles et ses tentatives d'évasion. C'est peut-être dans ce contexte que le peintre fut autorisé à consacrer du temps à la réalisation de vues architecturales. L'œuvre indique que le peintre était un élève de Pontienioli Leconte. Il semblerait qu'il s'agisse d'une référence à l'école des beaux-arts « l'atelier Pontrémoli ». Toulouse: Jean-Matthieu Douladoure, 1820. First edition. Complete, with 11 folding engraved plates. Contemporary leather spine with gilt titles. Hardback boards. These are significantly rubbed - particularly the front board, which has an area of surface loss. Binding is holding very well though. First blank end paper has silverfish damage. The rest of the book is in good, clean condition, with a little darkening to the pages and a touch of marking to the top edge (not affecting text). The folding plates are pretty good condition, with a touch of darkening / bumping to the edges. A few small closed tears to the edges of some plates only. Overall a decent copy of a scarce first edition. French architectural writings 16th to 19th century. Armand Joseph Marie de Saint-Félix (1794-1866), Marquis de Mauremont and Count of Cajarc. He was a Legitimist politician, was one of the 40 maintainers of the Jeux Floraux (The Floral Games were instituted in 1323 in Toulouse by seven troubadours to maintain courtly lyricism. Fractional rubbing, but holding well. Gilt titles to the spine. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with a fractional darkening to the pages only. Title page with Volland's statement to the verso. Company stamps to the title and blank pages. There is also a separate full page advert for Volland, which is a copy of the title page. 43 full page black and white plates, including a double plate. Complete. Overall a very nice copy. 41cm x 32cm.

Paris / Orléans: Roret Libraire / Alphonse Gatineau, 1841. First edition. A rare pamphlet on Germigny-Des-Prés, and in particular on the church there. The work is published as part of a series of works on the archaeology of the Loire. After a brief history of the village, the booklet focuses on the oratory and it's main features. It was published during the oratory's restoration, his memoir meticulously documents Carolingian architectural details (Theodulf's 806 oratory), the Mosaic iconography (Zodiac, Rivers of Paradise) and a controversial Carolingian inscription. Vergnaud fell victim to a planted Carolingian inscription on a pillar, exposed 1923 as a 19th-century hoax. His good-faith documentation preserved the site's significance despite the forgery. 16 pages & folding plate showing mosaic and inscription. Blue paper covers with private library shelf label to the cover.* Covers are clean and neat. The text pages within are in good condition, but are quite heavily foxed. Small hole in the final page (not affecting text). The folding plate is in very good condition with fractional foxing. 22.5cm x 14cm. No copies for sale at the time of cataloguing. The collection was dispersed at auction in Véndome in 2022. Première édition. Brochure rare sur Germigny-Des-Prés, et en particulier sur l'église qui s'y trouve. L'ouvrage est publié dans le cadre d'une série d'ouvrages consacrés à l'archéologie de la Loire. Après un bref historique du village, la brochure se concentre sur l'oratoire et ses principales caractéristiques. London: Unpublished, 1960. A hardback bound typescript of a report by Lt-Col Shore, on faults and problems with the architecture of Milton Abbey in Dorset. Bound in blue cloth with gilt titles. The typescript itself is unpaginated, but is 11 pages long. Printed to one side in red and black. Also bound in are 8 large (305 mm x 240 mm) black and white silver gelatin photographs of details of the Abbey architecture, including one with the members of the Abbey team showing some Saxon stone work. There are two further loose photographs, one of which is a little tatty to the edges. The report is signed in fountain pen by the author. There is also a compliments letter loosely enclosed. In good clean condition, with a touch of darkening to the edges only. 355 by 255mm (14 by 10 inches).

Italy: Skinnerboox, 2019. A beautiful copy of this limited edition photo book. Printed in only 500 copies. The softback is entirely on black paper with silver printing of text and some of the photographs are printed in silver on the black paper also. The second half of the book (28 pages) is mostly white paper, with colour and black and white photographs printed on most pages (a few are blank pages). The last two pages are an essay on "the archaeology of the future," Accompanying the book, is another document, the same length, on paper (without a stiff cover). This contains the text to accompany each image (so only a couple of lines per page). The theme of the work is predominantly industrial and scientific in nature. Both of the books are in excellent, clean and bright condition, with no flaws. 300 by 240mm (11¾ by 9½ inches).

In excellent condition, Very slight marking to the sheet. Image area is 18cm x 35,5cm. Sheet is 31.5 cm x 48cm. Closed tear to the top edge. A nice original piece or architectural art. Signature is hard to read, but appears to be Guingol or similar.

France: n/a, 1900. Wonderful French architectural manuscript portfolio on 'Perspective'. This appears to be a student's own manuscript and sketches from an architectural or art course. All of the contents are dealing with perspective in different forms. Some are purely mathematical (such as the design and sketches of cones and other shapes.) Others are examples of sketches drawn in proper perspective. The portfolio contains a large number of loose leaves. Each aspect (text in French) has one or more illustrations following. Many (but not all) of the pages have pencilled numbers to the top edge. In total there are 48 pages of text and 64 pages of illustrations / diagrams. In fact, there are a few more, but we have only counted "significant" pages. The paper is a little darkened, and there are a few very minor closed tears to the page edge. The folder has cracking to the spine edge, and is darkened, and at least one of the ties is still functioning. The front has a tipped on printed illustration with the title. An attractive and fascinating piece. 330 x 255 mm (13 x 10 inches). Magnifique portfolio de manuscrits architecturaux français sur 'Perspective'. Originally published in "La Revue Archéologique" it is reprinted here and bound in an attractive half dark brown leather with matching marbled boards. Gilt titles to a black label on the spine. In excellent condition with just a touch of bumping to the binding. Internally in very good, clean condition with bright pages. Includes four engraved plates to the rear. London: T. Nelson and Sons, 1867. First edition. Complete with 12 high quality colour lithographs and text. One of the "Nelsons' Pictorial Guide-Books for Tourists" series. Lilac covered blind and gilt stamped hardback with a colour lithograph pasted to the centre of the front cover. (This is one of the 12 lithographs). Pale blue end papers. Blind stamped booksellers embossed with "W.H. Smith & Co" to the front end paper. The work is complete with 11 lithographs inside, and 32 pages of accompanying text. There were other publications by Nelson at the same time. One was a portfolio with loose plates and 16 pages of text. Another with 24 plates combines the Interior and Exterior illustrations. Condition is excellent. A little fading to the front cover and spine, but clean and with minimal handling. Internally clean and tidy throughout. 11cm x 17cm. 32 pages.
