These are significantly rubbed - particularly the front board, which has an area of surface loss. Binding is holding very well though. First blank end paper has silverfish damage. The rest of the book is in good, clean condition, with a little darkening to the pages and a touch of marking to the top edge (not affecting text). The folding plates are pretty good condition, with a touch of darkening / bumping to the edges. A few small closed tears to the edges of some plates only. Overall a decent copy of a scarce first edition. French architectural writings 16th to 19th century. Armand Joseph Marie de Saint-Félix (1794-1866), Marquis de Mauremont and Count of Cajarc. He was a Legitimist politician, was one of the 40 maintainers of the Jeux Floraux (The Floral Games were instituted in 1323 in Toulouse by seven troubadours to maintain courtly lyricism. A lovely collection of 7 ink and water-colour designs by Ledonné, which were part of his submission for the "Designing" certificate from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Together with a printed and embossed certificate from the college. The sheets comprise: "Tuscan Order Cap and Entablature" Nov. 1899; "Doric Order Pedestal and Base" Nov. 1899; "Doric Order Capital and Entablature" Dec. 1899; "Ionic Order Capital and Entablature" Jan. 1900; "Ionic Order Pedestal and Base" Feb. 1900; "Corinthian Order Capital and Entablature" April 1900; and a "Study of Corinthian Temple" Jan. 1901. Each of the sheets is approximately 49 x 37 cm. They are all in good, clean condition, but some have a little marking / foxing to one edge. A touch of creasing to a couple of corners. All are of an excellent standard, and suitable for framing. The Cooper Union was founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper, in New York in 1858 (according to certificate, 1859 according to their website) and still exists today. The certificate, with an attractive engraved vignette of the Great Hall of the college. It is signed by both the director and the president of the colledge in ink, and has a blind stamped embossed seal It shows that Ledonne was enrolled in the Free Night School, and presumably in an Architecture School (although this topic was called designing). We can find little about Ledonné. A Frenchman, he was in America between 1899 and 1903, and later returned to France and worked as a draughtsman or architect under the architect Eugené Dr Chifflot (Brother of Jules Léon Chifflot).

These fabulous illustrations, were created by Lesueur and Alaux between 1826 and 1828. Lithography by Godefroy Engelmann. They were originally gathered in a portfolio of 14 plates (according to FirstSearch - some sources state 15 but may be including a title). They seem to have been issued uncoloured, and we have seen no original plates offered with hand colouring. Each plate was presented with an engraved view of a roman antiquity or scene, and then several lines of small text in French below. (There was a 20th Century uncoloured reproduction but this is without the text). Here we offer five of the plates. Each has the contemporary hand colouring, and is framed and glazed with passe partout and a more recent simple gilt frame. Here the views have a visible area of 47cm x 31cm, beneath a passe partout of 49cm x 59cm, and held within a frame of 53cm x 62cm. The passe partout has a very slight wave to each plate, otherwise they are in fine condition. The five views are: Colonne élevée á L'Empereur Phocas (1826), good clean condition; Temple de Mars-Vengeur (1826) very good clean condition, with a few very light foxing spots to the text area; Vue du Capitole (1827) in excellent clean condition; Vue du Portique d'Octavie (No date), good clean condition; and Vue du Forum Trajan (1828) In excellent condition. This is the only picture which is horizontal rather than vertical. Godefroy Engelmann (1788-1839): Lithographer printer, painter, designer and inventor. From Mulhouse, he was a prolific publisher; Jean-Paul Alaux (1788-1858) from Bordeaux, was a lithographer and painter who specialised in landscape and antique views; Jean-Baptiste-Cicéron Lesueur (1794-1883) was primarily a French architect, but spent some time studying the ancient architecture of Rome and collaborated with Alaux on this project. Paris: Thierry Fréres, 1840. Pale blue boards, with buckram spine. Illustration of a Gothic chapel to the front board. The boards are a little marked and stained, particularly to the back board. Inside are 8 lithographs and an estate plan of Fraidaigue (or Fraid-augue). Fraidaigue (Route de Morges 21). This was a country house in the form of a neo-Gothic chapel built in 1831 for the Dutch-born general Hendryk van Oyen, who previously owned La Gordanne near Perroy. This building was replaced in 1904 by a wealthy villa designed by architects Alphonse Laverrière and Eugène Monod. The lithographs and map are in excellent condition. with a little foxing to the borders only. The plates are drawn from nature by Zélie Vachon. They are deliniated by Jean-Jacques Champin (1796 - 1860), and lithographed by Thierry frères of Paris. Copies of the lithographs are held in the Musée d'art et d'histoire de la Ville de Genève. Here they are dated to the first half of the Nineteenth Century. The house/ chapel was located just outside St Prex, on the Geneva-Lausanne road (now Route de Morges). 9 leaves, printed to recto only. One folding. 350 x 290 mm (13¾ x 11½ inches).

Paris: Chez l'Auteur [F. CONTET], 1908. First edition. Original hardback portfolios, with blue cloth spines. Series 1. has a printed pattern to the boards. Series 2. a marbled design. Each portfolio has the title in gilt to the spine (Somewhat faded to series 2.) Both portfolios are split to the bottom few centimetres of the spine. Still holding up well though. Each then has a title page (Quite darkened to series 1. a little to series 2). 4 pages of descriptive text of the hotels / plates (In good condition to both with a little edgewear only). Then follow the 40 plates to each volume. These are all in good, clean condition with no significant flaws to them. Beautiful black and white photographs reproduced in photo-type by Alary Ruelle. These first editions are the first 2 in what would be 22 volumes covering the architecture of Paris. The author was part of the Society of History and Archaeology of the VIIth arrondissement. 460 by 330mm (18 by 13 inches). Please note, these volumes weigh 5kg. A little rubbing to the spine and board edges. This copy is embellished with a tipped in signed autograph letter (ALS) on headed note paper. Original edition of this monograph on the new Opera by its archivist. Portrait by Maunoury, photographer (photoglypty by Lemercier) mounted on the frontispiece. 59 engravings and 3 plans (including 1 on double-page). The question of an opera for the city of Paris gave rise to several projects, before its construction was entrusted to Charles Garnier. Front end paper has a small split to the bottom edge. Overall a lovely copy. 255 pages. 260 x 170mm (10¼ x 6¾ inches).

France: n/a, 1900. Wonderful French architectural manuscript portfolio on 'Perspective'. This appears to be a student's own manuscript and sketches from an architectural or art course. All of the contents are dealing with perspective in different forms. Some are purely mathematical (such as the design and sketches of cones and other shapes.) Others are examples of sketches drawn in proper perspective. The portfolio contains a large number of loose leaves. Each aspect (text in French) has one or more illustrations following. Many (but not all) of the pages have pencilled numbers to the top edge. In total there are 48 pages of text and 64 pages of illustrations / diagrams. In fact, there are a few more, but we have only counted "significant" pages. The paper is a little darkened, and there are a few very minor closed tears to the page edge. The folder has cracking to the spine edge, and is darkened, and at least one of the ties is still functioning. The front has a tipped on printed illustration with the title. An attractive and fascinating piece. 330 x 255 mm (13 x 10 inches). Magnifique portfolio de manuscrits architecturaux français sur 'Perspective'. Moderate darkening to the spine and there is splitting, cracking and chipping to the spine. Bookplate of Henry, Thomas Ellacombe (vicar and antiquarian) to the inside board. Small stamp shows that this volume belonged to the Assay office of Birmingham. Opposite the title page, an albumen photograph (circa 1870) of a lady stood by an iron gate has been tipped in. 40 lithograph plates tipped in. 127, [ii] pp. 255 x 195 mm (10 x 7¾ inches). Marbled end papers and University of France bookplate showing that this was a First Prize for Graphic Design work in 1889. The work is full of text, and with a large number of engraved illustrations, showing the technique of perspective and artistic geometry. Text in French. 152 pages. 270 x 170 mm (10¾ x 6¾ inches). London: Unpublished, 1960. A hardback bound typescript of a report by Lt-Col Shore, on faults and problems with the architecture of Milton Abbey in Dorset. Bound in blue cloth with gilt titles. The typescript itself is unpaginated, but is 11 pages long. Printed to one side in red and black. Also bound in are 8 large (305 mm x 240 mm) black and white silver gelatin photographs of details of the Abbey architecture, including one with the members of the Abbey team showing some Saxon stone work. There are two further loose photographs, one of which is a little tatty to the edges. The report is signed in fountain pen by the author. There is also a compliments letter loosely enclosed. In good clean condition, with a touch of darkening to the edges only. 355 by 255mm (14 by 10 inches).

1903. Four documents concerned with the Paddington Estate in West London. The monks of Westminster had land in Paddington from the 11th Century. After the Reformation, these rested with the Bishop of London. From the late 19th Century, these were gradually sold of through holding companies, the last being sold in the 1980's. These documents comprise: July 1903 - A counterpart licence for 14 Cleveland Square with permissions to renovations and changes to the property. 4 pages. April 1913 - A counterpart licence to add a garage for private motor cars to 7 Chilworth Mews. 3 pages and a large drawn handcoloured architectural plan of the front of the building and ground floor (on glassine). July 1926 - A licence and deed of covenant to turn 40 Cleveland Square into 3 maisonettes. 12 pages. plus a large folding architectural plan of the proposed changes, with seals and tagged seal. February 1929 - A lease from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners to A. H. Heath for a lease on 110 Westbourne Terrace, Paddington. 6 pages and glassine coloured plan of property. A nice bundle of London related legal documents.
