The binding is holding firmly and in good order, the boards rubbed to edges and bumped / abraded to corners. Textblock holding firmly, contents generally in good condition if toned, with some scattered browning and light foxing/handling marks, a few corners creased, some dustmarking to edges, occasional ink splats. Final leaf torn with loss in lower margin, with partial loss to three characters of letterpress. Title with old ink price at head. Original plain endpapers, gutters reinforced, various old ink and pencil inscriptions to upper and lower, with bookplates of Bishop Philpott's library Truro to upper pastedown. There is both the library bookplate and the original bookplate of Henry Phillpott, Bishop of Exeter. Conforms to Worldcat / OCLC: 5104762. Signatures: A⁸, [a]⁶, B-2F⁸ (+ 1 unsigned leaf after 2F8). The text below explains that a louse is taken from the beard of the Abbot, and placed in the centre of a round table. The monk whose beard it choses to find as its new home, will be superior for the next year. a large (29cm x 47cm) print, which is mainly clean and tidy. A touch of marking only. There is a small stain to the bottom, below the text. There has been a small area of loss to the right edge, but is almost hidden where the backing sheet is laid down. The sheet has been pasted onto a heavy backing paper, which has protected it will. Minor edgewear only. This is a rare item, that was also made into a postcard. Our searches have only found copies of the postcard for sale.

In the latter part of his career, Lavrate committed himself to the creation of comic watercolours, which frequently lampooned military subjects. With the establishment of the French Republic, he redirected his satirical attention toward Napoleon III, a figure persistently targeted by Republican caricaturists following the defeat at Sedan. According to Guillaume Doizy, Lavrate's body of work extended beyond the traditional boundaries of anticlerical and Republican political caricature to encompass what he termed "anticlerical caricature of manners." Le texte ci-dessous explique qu'un pou est prélevé de la barbe de l'abbé et placé au centre d'une table ronde. Le moine dont la barbe aura été choisie comme nouveau domicile sera le supérieur pour l'année suivante. Une grande estampe (29 cm x 47 cm), principalement propre et en bon état. Seulement quelques traces légères. Il y a une petite tache en bas, sous le texte. Il y a une petite perte sur le bord droit, mais elle est presque cachée par la feuille de support. La feuille a été collée sur un papier de support épais, qui l'a bien protégée. Seulement quelques traces d'usure mineures sur les bords. Full period leather binding with black and burgundy labels and gilt titles and decoration to the spines. Both are a little rubbed and bumped, but holding together well. Contemporary ownership signatures to the half title and title of each volume. Table of contents to the rear of the second volume. Complete with six full page engravings outside the text including two frontispieces. (one showing the torture in all its glory!) The author traces the history of heresies from the Roman era, before focusing on the Inquisition, its creation, its influence, from the Albigensian and Cathar persecutions, to trials brought in Portugal in 1808. Dorbon 2506. Collation: 400., 415. pages. 20.5cm x 13cm. The most vibrant heresy in Europe was Catharism, also known as Albigensianism—for Albi, a city in southern France where it flourished. Catharism held that the universe was a battleground between good, which was spirit, and evil, which was matter. Human beings were believed to be spirits trapped in physical bodies.

The first is an attempt at a compromise between the established Church and Protestantism, with an appendix on Excommunication. The second book is a first edition dated 1663 with red and black title. Contemporary dark brown leather boards. A renewed spine with the original black leather label and gilt titles laid down. A little bumping to the corners of the binding, but otherwise sound. Internally, pages are a little darkened, but overall in very good condition. [xxii], 1-416, 1-32., [xxxvi], 1-620 pages. Wing: S5597C ESTC: R218812. 19.5cm x 15cm. Deuxième édition. The original edition in 100 pages. followed by: "Response to the letter of a person of status concerning the rules of conduct of the Holy Fathers in the composition of their works", by Antoine Arnauld, Also 1654 104 pages. Later half leather binding with marbled boards, with label and ornate detail and text in gilt to the spine. Binding in excellent condition. Ex libris to the inside front board. Slightly later manuscript hand to the second end paper outlining the authorship, and giving details of the later 1683 edition. Internally in excellent condition. Slight darkening to the pages only. A very nice copy. The allegorical engraving is in excellent condition, with just a touch of edge wear. 175 by 115mm (7 by 4½ inches). The first part conforms to FirstSearch / OCLC: 718197303. Complete copy of this rare pamphlet directed against the Jesuits. The text is a detailed commentary in eighteen "illuminations" relating to the parts of the print. The last page bears a finished printing "illuminated for the first time on January 15 and for the second on February 18, 1654". (The final page of the response is dated 20th March 1654). One of the aims of the work was to rally the non-specialist public to the cause of effective grace, an objective pursued by Pascal's Provinciales, for which the Enluminures thus served as a dress rehearsal. This text contains many references not found elsewhere on the Jansenist movement in the provinces.

These woodcuts are biographical pieces, mainly aimed against the Roman Catholic church. Described as: sharp satire against monasticism and priesthood: Hayn-Got. VIII, 328. Veit Weber was the pseudonym of Georg Philip Ludwig Leonhard Waechter (1762-1837). A writer of fiction, and briefly a revolutionary. As a young man he went to France, and joined the citizen army, he only returned to Germany when he was wounded. 428 pages. 170 x 110 mm (6¾ x 4¼ inches).

London: R. W. for Henry Mortlock: 1673. Contemporary full leather, strengthened at some point. Recent burgundy label with gilt titles. The book has no end papers, and begins with the imprimatur pasted down to the front board. The final page is pasted to the rear board. The work begins with the title page. The book is in three parts. There is a lengthy "General preface", followed by the Contents, and "An examination of the pamphlet entituled Dr. Stillingfleet against Dr Stilllingfleet". The third part is "An answer to the book entitled, Dr Stillingfleet's Principles Considered". [LXXXVI], 1-12, 13-73,[i], 75-291. pp

The original boards are a little rubbed and bumped, but still holding well. The spine has been strengthened and although the leather appears cracked, it is holding well. The label is bright. Inside, the binding is quite cracked to the front hinge, but still secure. A contemporary hand has practiced it's writing of "imprimatur" to the inside board. The rest of the book is in good clean condition, with only moderate darkening. A tiny amount of edge wear to the title page, but nothing significant.

This work was the culmination of an attack on Catholicism which began with the Discourse in 1671. Edward Meredith and the recusant Catholic Thomas Godden replied on the Catholic side, and here he continues his attack. His attack is wide ranging, from objecting to the Pope's decrees and the Council of Trent, through to accusing Ignatius Loyola of fanaticism. Edward Stillingfleet (1635-1699) was an Anglican theologian from Cranborne in Dorset. He was known as "The beauty of Holiness" for his good looks. He preached at St Margaret's, Westminster, on the day after the Great Fire in 1666. He was a leader amongst the "Latitudinarians" a group of young Anglicans, named pejoratively as "men of latitude" for the ease in which they switched side from the Parliamentary to the Royalist position after the Restoration. He was predominantly low church, and wanted reconciliation with Presbyterians - but certainly not with Catholics. Later he became the Bishop of Worcester (1689)

Leather on spine is worn, with some scrapes. Boards themselves are a lightened in places / watermarked. There is a small watermark to the top right corner of the first two pages in the contents. All page edges gilt. Marbles end papers. xcviii, 105 pp. 250 x 160 mm (9¾ x 6¼ inches). Signed by the author to the top of the title page. This is a message to what appears to say 'Philip Grove of Leeds', and references two pages within the book, that subsequently have the name Grove underlined. Other paragraphs the author wishes to draw Grove's attention to are marked in the margin in a couple of places.

London: Henry Hills, 1687. First Edition. Full leather binding (the boards original, the spine renewed). Gilt titles to the spine. Binding is a little rubbed to the edges but substantially sound. Owner's bookplate to the inside board for William Howard of Devon. Howard (1774-1860) was an early member of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Previous owner's purchase comments to the front end paper. The text itself is clean and tidy, if a little darkened. 160 by 95mm (6¼ by 3¾ inches). [viii], 1-206, i. pp

Following a pamphlet by Sir William Coventry, Johnston published this work, which aimed to demonstrate that even if the Religious Orders were restored in England, the possessors of the church lands confiscated by Henry VIII could not be disturbed.

London: Seeleys: All published of this Anti-Catholic journal. Begun in July 1827, it ceased in 1828. Brown buckram boards with gilt titles to the spine. Volumes I & 2 bound as one. Bookplate of the Law Society to the inside board. Contemporary owner's signature to the half title. Contents to the beginning of volume I. The boards are in excellent condition. The pages of the journals are very clean and tidy, with only a touch of foxing or edge wear to them. The contents are a variety of articles and letters aimed at proving the superiority of the the Protestant Faith over Popish Superstition. There is even an article on Prophecies showing the overthrow of the Roman Church in volume II. It seems that the editors didn't prophecies the demise of the journal, as it ends at the end of the final issue without any comment. ii, 1-380. 1-288 pp.

London: Tho. Newcomb for Henry Brome: 1678. Disbound sermon. Paper covers. Title, with black funereal border. There is a touch of nicking to the corners of the paper cover. The cover is darkened - the rest of the sermon is clean and tidy. A sound copy. Anti Catholic sermon preached at the funeral of Lloyd's parishioner, Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey, the justice of the peace to whom Titus Oates made his first depositions concerning the Popish Plot. Shortly thereafter, he was found mysteriously murdered in a ditch on Primrose Hill. This led to the arrests of several Catholics - and was the beginning of the hysteria of the Popish Plot. It would appear, in hindsight, that Oates himself was involved in the murder, and that its aim was to bolster support for his anti-Catholic allegations. 42pp - Wing L2700

London: Randal Taylor, 1690. Although the Popish Plot was ten years gone by the time this polemic was published, anti-Catholic feeling still ran high. This pamphlet purports to show all of the ways that Papists had attempted to undermine the Church of England since the Reformation. As such, this is almost a literature review of the previous hundred years, summarising Bishop Burnett, Stillingfleet and others, whilst quoting from Parliament and Catholic peers. It is followed by A LETTER OF THE MINISTERS Of the CITY of LONDON, Presented the First of January, 1645. to the Reverend Assembly of Divines sitting at Westminster, by Authority of Parliament, against TOLERATION. This pamphlet has been abstracted from a collection, and so appears as a disbound item - with the binding marks and stab marks to the spine. No wrapper or cover (now held in a protective sleeve. The top edge of the first couple of pages is beginning to come away - although the binding is still holding securely. A touch of darkening to the front and rear pages, less so inside. London: 1813. An Anti-Catholic pamphlet, printed by J.J. Stockdale. An examination of the Claims of Roman Catholics, particularly those in Ireland, and concluding that "Too much is already conceded to the Papists." The initials W.L.J. appear in ink to the top of the title page. There are some annotations in ink throughout the text. These are in a contemporary hand, and appear to be proofing corrections - changing the grammar, correcting errors, and altering some footnotes. Perhaps this copy was being prepared for a second publication? If so, it came to nothing, as Copac cites only two holdings of this issue, with no others cited.Good clean, but with no wrappers (if any). This was once part of a larger work, and has been removed from this - but was published alone (with price, printers details and colophon here). There is a touch of darkening to the outside pages. Internally clean, with the annotations as described above. This work was published anonymously, and there is no reference on Copac or in bibliographies of anonymous literature to any author. However, the name Richard Mence Esq. is written in a contemporary hand alongside the stated "Country Gentleman" This would certainly fit well. Richard Mence was a Barrister, at Middle Temple, who went on to write about the Law of Libel. He was active in writing at this time, and his dedication in the Law of Libel, was to those who oppose "Disloyal and Seditious Principles" These almost certainly included Catholic Emancipation. With his awareness of Libel laws, he was perhaps wise to remain anonymous! 49 [i]. pp

London: John Lee, 1843. A pamphlet (once bound in with other pamphlets). Complete. Title page, Introduction, text. The pamphlet now appears disbound, as it has been removed from a collection - but is complete in itself. A touch of darkening to the covers, and a small stain to the bottom of pages 4/5 but otherwise in good clean condition. Now held in an archival wallet. 24 pp. A scarce item, Copac shows holdings only at BL, Oxford & Cambridge. William Joseph Irons (1812-1883) was an Anglican priest and Theolgian. He was a strong defender of Church of England as the Established Church, and argued against seceding from the church (whether to Rome or to the more Protestant churches). He was the vicar of Brompton at the time of the publication of this work, and the introduction is dated Brompton April 1843. He is names by Lawrence Crumb (in "The Oxford Movement and its leaders, a bibliography of Secondary and Lesser Primary Sources") as the probable author of this work.

London: Ric. Chiswell at the Rose and Crown in St Paul's Church Yard: 1688. pamphlet, disbound. Title, text, adverts (for Chiswell). "A Clear Proof" although written as through from a Protestant, was in fact a Catholic work, trying to disprove the certainty of Protestantism. This work is a rebuttal of that work. Apart from a little light foxing in a few places, the text is clean and crisp throughout and well bound together. John Williams (C1633–1709), was a Church of England minister, and later Bishop of Chichester (not to be confused with the Jesuit priest of the same period). He was very anti-Catholic and wrote a large number of pamphlets attacking Rome. He argued that the Popish plot was genuine, and was firmly opposed to the accession of James. London: Tho. Basset, James Adamson, and Tho. Newborough: 1687. Pamphlet. A contemporary account / bibliography of the tracts and pamphlets published by both sides. Most of these were anonymous, and there are marginalia which name the author in most cases in a contemporary hand. Title, text, errata. The errata has been crossed out, and the corrections listed have been made by hand in the text. Clagett was particularly close friends with his eventual successor at Gray's Inn, William Wake, the future archbishop of Canterbury. Clagett saw through the press Wake's "The present state" while Wake was lying low in Dorchester, leading to its sometimes being erroneously credited to Clagett (including by Wing, who referenced it as C4390). The title leaf is detached and a little grubby. The text shows some light staining in places and has some marginal ink notes, the first few leaves are partially detached at the top, everything else is well bound together. Wake, William (1657–1737), became Archbishop of Canterbury. He was originally from Blandford Forum in Dorset, and became a convinced Anglican after spending time in France. He wrote many tracts opposing Catholicism.
William Clagett (1646–1688) was an English clergyman and pamphleteer, particularly active during the reign of James II, when he was very anti-catholic. 1-40 pp. Wing C4390.
