    [ANON]
Original watercolour of swooping house martins

Rocca San Casciano: Cappelli, 1895. This exquisite watercolour painting has a 19th Century wedding congratulation message adhered to it. The painting is signed, but we cannot decipher its creator's name. The wedding dedication is dated 1895, so the painting pre dates this. Blank verso. Size: 405 x 305 mm (16 x 12 inches)

Verso vierge. Taille : 405 x 305 mm

    [ANON]
Original Watercolour: View from Castle at Richmond of the River Swale (North Yorkshire)

1876. Lovely original watercolour painting of the view across the River Swale in North Yorkshire, from Richmond Castle Hill - with a couple in the foreground. The painting is signed, but we cannot agree and the signature. At some point a previous owner was told it was a painting of the river at Richmond Castle, and assumed it was Richmond in Surrey, when in fact Richmond Castle is in Richmond in Yorkshire, and looks over the River Swale, not the Thames! Tipped on to white card, corners cut to resemble being in an album. Watercolour measures: 205 x 350 mm (8 x 13¾ inches). Whole on backing: 400 x 495 mm

    Original-Graphik von Ernst Barlach

1870. The label to the back of this black and white image states " Original-Graphik von Ernst Barlach" The image is clearly of Barlach. But it appears to be a lithograph of an ink original, rather than an actual ink drawing. It is difficult to be certain, as the paper has been secured to the glass at the edges, and could not neatly be removed (So we have left it secured). Although the image has marked similarities with other drawn works of Barlach, we have been unable to locate another copy of this image. There is possibly an artist's initials to the lower right of the frame (see pics). Underneath the frame, to the rear of the image, is written "6 abels wie ist 883" It is on heavy art paper, and in very good clean condition. Held in a white glazed frame. The frame has a few tiny nicks to the edges, but overall an attractive and striking portrait.
Image area 53cm wide by 35 cm high (13¾ by 20¾ inches). Frame area 67cm x 52.5cm. Ernst Heinrich Barlach (1870-1978) was a German expressionist sculptor, printmaker and writer. Although he was a supporter of the war in the years leading to World War I, his participation in the war made him change his position, and he is mostly known for his sculptures protesting against the war. He felt foul of the Nazi party and was labeled degenerate. He did produce a number of self-portraits - largely woodcuts.

Paris: Masson et Cie. This work on orthopaedia, published in 1901, was part history of orthopaedics, and part medical corset catalogue. It stated that it included 98 gravures, but most of these are black and white vignettes. The work contained 11 full colour lithographic plates engraved by LARTAUD and printed by Geny-Gros. A scarce item, the best example seems to be that of the Wellcome Collection (K30262). They also show the same 11 plates. The plates are in good, clean condition, with just a touch of foxing spots here and there. The reverse shows where each has been removed from the original book. . BETTENS. Edward D.
Painter and Patron. [TOGETHER WITH] Picture Buying

New York: Self Published, 1918. Two works, offered together, on the subject of the acquisition of artworks by American museums. Both written by Edward Detraz Bettens. His mother (Louise E Bettens) had been a patron of the Fogg Museum's art collection. Each work was printed in 650 copies (un-numbered) for private circulation (it seems primarily among institutions and art buyers). The theme of each is to encourage and outline reasons for buying artwork directly from living artists, rather than through brokers. Picture Buying is the sequel, and much of it is containing responses and letters regarding the original publication. Both in green cloth, with high quality laid paper. 66, 88 pages + photographic plates. 250 by 160mm (9¾ by 6¼ inches).

Condition: Both books are in very good condition, with the original green cloth and gilt clean and bright. Vol 1. has a touch of fading to the top edge. Inside, both works are clean, with a little darkening only. Both bear the bookplate and discrete reference library stamps for the Prentenkabinet of the University of Leiden.
