This is a beautiful French hand finished chromolithographic poster is advertising performances of "Le Pays de l'Or" [The Golden Land], an operetta and spectacle written in 1832, set in America. This was first performed at le théâtre de la Gaîté in Montparnasse, Paris at the beginning of 1892. The poster, designed by artist "Le Maresquier", features a female gymnast riding a bicycle on a slack wire over Niagara Falls. Several Americana-themed vignettes surround her. An attractive poster mounted on linen. Very good, clean poster, with gold hand colouring to some parts. A few small scratches to the image where a previous mounted frame has broken. Two neatly repaired tears to the top…

Il s'agit d'une belle affiche chromolithographique française finie à la main qui annonce les représentations de "Le Pays de l'Or" [The Golden Land], une opérette et un spectacle écrits en 1832, se déroulant en Amérique. L'affiche, conçue par l'artiste « Le Maresquier », représente une gymnaste faisant du vélo sur un fil mou au-dessus des chutes du Niagara. Plusieurs vignettes sur le thème de l'Americana l'entourent. Une jolie affiche montée sur lin. Très bonne affiche propre, avec une coloration dorée à la main sur certaines parties. Quelques petites rayures sur l'image où un cadre monté précédent s'est cassé. Deux déchirures soigneusement réparées sur le bord supérieur de l'affiche (n'affectant pas vraiment l'image). L'image est de 800 mm x 600 mm. Le lin de support mesure 830 mm x 635 mm.

    The same image is lodged with the National Portrait Gallery. Here it does not have Ruskin's name (but does have the photographer's details). This is catalogued as a carte-de-visite, and dated 1867. Presumably the photographer issued the photograph of Ruskin shortly afterwards. This is referenced NPG Ax39887. The Albumen Process was developed in 1847, and was the first commercially exploitable method of producing a photographic print on a paper base from a negative. It was the dominant form of photographic positive until the turn of the century.

Contents to the rear. There is a little rubbing to the edges of the boards, and splitting to both front and rear hinge (boards are holding well though). Slipcase is marbled, with a touch of rubbing and a little nicking to the head and tail - not split though. Internally clean and tidy - with a little darkening and a few light foxing spots.
