  • A thoughtful man by Tregear
    Tregear
A thoughtful man it's devilisish lucky I thought of my umberella

London: G. Tregear, 1835. A nice copy of this hand coloured lithograph, showing a poor man in ragged clothes, with a ragged umbrella which doesn't protect him from the rain. The implication from the spelling is that he is a drinker. Printed to the top right, it states this is Tregear's Flights of humor #8. First published in 1831. Firstsearch / Copac states that this is Flights of humour #7. It seems that this is a slightly later printing of the series. Good attractive colours, with strong contrast. The stiff card is slightly darkened / marked to the background, but is still a nice copy of this scarce caricature. The print is 29.5cm x 23.5cm. This is slightly smaller…

Otherwise conforms to OCLC: 1238037496. Two small pieces of fixing tape to the rear.

Slightly darkened, and a single foxing spot. blank to verso. Very slight crease to the right edge. The sheet looks as if it may have been removed from an autograph book. Overall a lovely piece of Irish humour. 19cm x 14cm.

The work has been painted onto glassine, which has then been laid onto a proof sheet of the book "Les Églises Fortifiées de la Thiérache." Paris: S.P, 1933. A attractive water colour of the woods and short of Lége Cap Ferret by Lemasson. The work has been painted onto glassine, which has then been laid onto a proof sheet of the book "Les Églises Fortifiées de la Thiérache." Lemasson provided thirty colour lithographs for this work by Gabriel Hanotaux, celebrating the fortified churches of the Thiérache region (along the French / Belgian border). The painting is nicely coloured and showed a stylised view of the woods, with a figure in the middle ground looking out to sea. This is probably a preliminary sketch for a larger work, as the edges are not neatly finished, and a finished work would be unlikely to have a proof for a book as backing card. The title is written into a dune, and Lemasson liked it so much he signed it twice! Some edgewear and chipping / creasing with closed tears and fractional loss to the edges. An attractive piece. 38cm x 57cm.

Albert Lemasson was a French painter (1892-1982. He was classically trained and entered the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris in 1919. Lemasson specialized for about 25 years mainly in church decoration through frescoes, often working with his brother Paul Lemasson. Besides frescoes, he painted a variety of works including portraits, landscapes, and scenes from his travels in France, Italy, Spain, and Greece using oil, watercolor, ink, and other mediums. He exhibited his works in several galleries in Paris, Nantes, and Bordeaux over many decades.

Schenker (1760-1848) was primarily an engraver, born in Geneva, worked Paris. Pupil of Saint-Ours and Macret, he studied intaglio printing. Worked for Bartolozzi in England and France. Director of the 'Ecole de gravure de Genève' (1817-1822). He engraved with Gâtine the illustrations for the series 'Le Bon Genre' published by La Mésangère. He was also clearly a skilled water colourist.

Edmond Lavrate (1829–1888) was a French draftsman and lithographer renowned for his vigourous anticlerical stance, as well as for his innovations in illustrated advertising and satirical sketches. In the latter part of his career, Lavrate committed himself to the creation of comic watercolours, which frequently lampooned military subjects. With the establishment of the French Republic, he redirected his satirical attention toward Napoleon III, a figure persistently targeted by Republican caricaturists following the defeat at Sedan. According to Guillaume Doizy, Lavrate's body of work extended beyond the traditional boundaries of anticlerical and Republican political caricature to encompass what he termed "anticlerical caricature of manners."

    PLATIER, Jules.
Ah! Mon pauvre homme..... Les Jolis Petits visages No 15

Paris: Aubert & Cie, C1840. First edition. A lovely hand coloured caricature by the little known French caricaturist Jules Platier. An old lady speaks to an ancient sodier, and tells him that there are cherry trees near the guard house which he may scare! Perhaps a reference to his red cheeks or uniform? This plate is the 15th in the series published by Aubert under the ironic title Les Jolis Petits Visages, comprising 20 plates published between 1839 and 1841.  These also appeared in black in La Nouvelle Lanterne Magique from the same publisher. Beautifully coloured. Very slightly darkened sheet, with evidence of being hung / tipped in at some point. Fractional edgewear but overall an excellent example. 27.5cm…

27.5cm x 36cm. Jules Platier is one of the least known French caricaturists, despite his evident skill. His wonderful compositions show a high level of artistic skill. His birth and death dates or places are unknown. He was particularly associated with the Parisian publishing house established by Charles Philippon and Gabriel Aubert.

The work is signed Marie Laurent. Soissons, 26/1/1900. The rest of the work is 68 pages of neat text, with poems, comments and prose inspirational passages, mainly from famous French authors, and all written in French. Although most of this is in a variety of hands, the last tale, which is 24 pages long, is entitled "les trois messes basses" (A Christmas short story by Alphonse Daudet) and is in a neat hand by one writer. There are finally perhaps 150 blank pages. A beautifully presented book. Soissons is a commune in the northern French department of Aisne. 18.5cm x 13cm.

18,5 cm x 13 cm.
