Story variously attributed to Oliver Goldsmith, Giles Jones, Griffith Jones, and John Newbery. Illustrated with six hand coloured drawings by John Absolon. 24 unnumbered pages. OCLC Number / Unique Identifier: 702484527. Elton & Co. was formed around 1850 by Robert Henry Elton and John McLoughlin Jr. By 1855 imprints read: John McLoughlin, successor to Elton & Co. The sewn binding is in excellent shape, and the paper covers are only slightly handled / darkened. A previous owner's name is written across the top of the front cover, and verso of same. Back cover publisher's advertisement reads: Pleasure books for children. Twelve kinds. 175 x 130 mm (7 x 5 inches).

Reliure cartonnée soignée en plein bougran marron foncé. Dos à nerfs avec décorations et titre dorés. Toutes les tranches sont dorées. Note manuscrite soignée au début de l'ouvrage. The Inflexible Porter, a Tragedy
London: J.R. Smith, 1783. Stipple print engraving. Conforms to British Museum Satires 6343 - Museum number J,6.58. The engraving shows a porter lifting up both hands to show the impossibility of access to his master. He is addressing a would-be visitor, who faces him with his hat in hand, pointing towards his companion, a young man who stands with one hand is in his pocket, and the other, holding his hat, rests on the head of his cane. Under passe-partout. In excellent condition. 245 x 265 mm (9¾ x 10½ inches).

The 15 full page illustrations to the Kicklebury's are unsigned, the 8 plates in Rebecca & Rowena are attributed to Richard Doyle. These were two of the 'Christmas books' written by Thackeray. Clean full leather binding. A touch of rubbing. Spine is somewhat dulled. Internally clean, binding is firm but slightly shaken. 88, viii, 102 pages. 185 by 140mm (7¼ by 5½ inches).
