London: Longmans, Green, & Co, 1896. First edition. A nice copy of this uncommon first edition. Follow the adventures of Golliwogg and his old companions, a group of Dutch peg dolls, as they pedal their handcrafted bicycles across the globe. Their journey takes them through the streets of Paris, beneath the iron arches of the Eiffel Tower, and onward to Japan, where they discover the thrill of riding in a rickshaw. The trip continues through Turkey, across vast desert sands on camel back, until a dramatic encounter with a tribe of cannibals brings their expedition to a most unexpected halt. Original hardback boards with green cloth spine. There is a touch of darkening to the boards, and bumping to the corners, but still an attractive copy. Gift inscription in pencil to the inside front board. The title page is moderately darkened. The rest of the book is clean, with a few finger marks to some pages. There are a couple of very small closed tears to the edges (not affecting text). Lovely full page and vignette illustrations. Curiously, the copyright notice and date are printed on each full page illustration. 63 pages. 215 by 280mm (8½ by 11 inches).

Clean and tidy cream / brown cloth with a pasted woodcut portrait of cook and titles in black to the front board. The book is spotless throughout. 172 pages. 290 by 230mm (11½ by 9 inches). Howard Norton Cook (1901–1980) was an American artist, particularly known for his wood engravings and murals.

Circa 1875. A double sheet photograph, that has a crease to the centre where folded. A little darkening and creasing to the edges and slight fading to the left side. Otherwise reasonably clean if a little darkened. Inside, are eight pages, each with a half page hand coloured illustration and half page of verse. Clean but a little darkened. Adverts for the publisher to the rear cover. Would be an excellent copy if not for the tape. 15cm x 11cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 33100846 with the curious exception that all the records record it as "the story" rather than "history." He began in 1819 after moving to New York and initially worked for the Sterling Iron Company, where he developed an interest in printing. By 1828, he had established his own printing business on Tryon Row in Manhattan, focusing on publishing semi-religious tracts for children under the title McLoughlin's Books for Children. In 1840, McLoughlin partnered with wood engraver Robert H. Elton to form Elton & Co., which specialised in toy books, comic almanacs, and valentines. His son, John McLoughlin Jr., eventually took over in 1850 when both senior partners retired. The firm of McLoughlin Brothers is listed at 24 Beekman St. in the New York directories for 1858 to 1862, McLoughlin Bros. was located at 30 Beekman St., New York, between 1863 and April, 1870. Under John Jr.'s leadership, the company became known as McLoughlin Brothers and pioneered the use of colour printing technologies, including chromolithography, for children's books. This innovation made their publications visually striking and widely popular. The McLoughlin Brothers expanded their offerings to include games, puzzles, paper dolls, and other children's products. By 1870, they had opened the largest colour printing factory in the United States. Their works often featured adaptations of British stories by illustrators such as Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway. The company thrived until it was sold to Milton Bradley in 1920. Despite this transition, the McLoughlin imprint continued to produce children's books into the early 20th century.

The Illustrated London News, 1876. A bound collection of issues of The Illustrated London Almanack. This was published annually by The Illustrated London News from 1845 to 1895. The full title states that this "contains astronomical diagrams of remarkable phenomena, printed in tints, under the superintendence of James Breen. Ferns and Butterflies of the months, printed in colours by Leighton Brothers with descriptive letterpress by Mrs Lankester, fine art engravings, original designs heading the calendar and a variety of useful information." The illustrations show the Victorian obsession with the rural idyll.

Half brown leather, with gilt decoration and titles. Brown buckram boards. Boards are a little faded and rubbed, but still attractive. Marbled end papers. Internally in good, if slightly darkened condition.
Pagination is: 1865, 58 pages; 1866, 54 pages; All volumes from 1867 to 1874 have 56 pages in each; 1875, 48 pages, 1876, 48 pages. Each year is complete - apart from 1876, which has five of the six colour plates called for. 1866 has 4 colour plates (but it does not state how many it should have). There are a total of 69 full colour chromolithographs, and the rest b/w. Subjects include court circulars, information about government expenditure, Army & Navy movements, notable deaths and happenings in London &c. 280 mm x 210 mm (11 x 8¼ inches).

Crudely sewn binding with the first and last image providing the covers (not unusual for these early McLoughlins, we have seen several examples similarly stitched). The front cover is a little darkened but overall in decent condition. Including the covers, there are 8 pages of hand coloured woodcut images with text beneath. (complete). These pages are in fairly good condition, with just a little darkening, and a touch of shaking. The binding is in danger of separating with the spine edge splitting. The hand colouring is attractively done. 18.5cm x 11.5cm.
