1950. Three attractive postcard sized original water colours, pasted onto a dark paper background. Held in a simple wooden frame, under glass. Unsigned and anonymous. The first image shows a woman and officer inspecting a parade of Algerian (?) soldiers in uniform with Fez. One of them is smoking! The second shows a woman approaching a statue of St Raphael, seemingly in devotion, but actually reaching for a bottle of wine the statue is holding. The third, shows a line of circus / carnival folk queuing at an optician's reception. All are in good, clean condition and painted by a competent hand. Each image is 8.5cm x 14cm. Frame is 21cm x 48cm.

La première image montre une femme et un officier inspectant un défilé de soldats algériens ( ?) en uniforme avec Fez. L'un d'entre eux fume ! La deuxième image montre une femme s'approchant d'une statue de Saint-Raphaël, apparemment en signe de dévotion, mais cherchant en fait à attraper une bouteille de vin que la statue tient à la main. A poor artist in bed surrounded by buckets and sheltering under an umbrella. The signature of the artist is illegible. This print was produced as Galerie Comique #45. Stiff card, mainly clean with a touch of darkening to the edges. 24cm x 31.5cm. (2) Vernier "Riend n'est si cher que le bon marché." A couple walking in the rain, she is upset that her white dress has been turned blue by a cheap umbrella. Published in the Revue Caricaturale #34. Stiff card. Image is 21cm x 16.5cm. Sheet is 33.5cm x 24.5cm. Light to moderate foxing. (3) Garvani, Paul. "Ne pas trouver de voiture…" 1838. A couple walking in the rain under their umbrella. "Les Petits malheurs du bonheur" #9. on paper, published in Le Charivari with adverts and articles to the verso. A couple of small nicks to the edge, and a repaired tear. Tax stamp to the foot of the page. Image is 20cm x 17.5cm. Sheet is 34cm x 22.5cm. First edition.

Quelques petites entailles sur le bord, et une déchirure réparée. Timbre fiscal en bas de page. L'image mesure 20 cm x 17,5 cm. La feuille mesure 34 cm x 22,5 cm.

A gentleman and his wife shelter under and umbrella, whilst she shelters two children and a dog beneath her skirts. "Actualités" #533. Stiff card. Blank to verso. A little darkening and marking only. Scarce. 25.5cm x 34cm. (2) "Le Pauvre Péchure" Circa 1830. Unknown artist. A lovely image of a fisherman under his umbrella, pulling in a haul of bags of money, each labelled with political issues. Charivari Serie Petit #126. Nice clean engraving, but cropped a little to the bottom edge of the text, creasing to the edges. Charivari adverts and text to the verso. Thin paper. 23cm x 30cm. (3) Frederic Bouchot C1850. A Sleeping couple under an umbrella whilst two other relieve them of their coats etc. "Ces pauvres gens, ont-ils chaud!" From Le Charivari, Croquis du Jour #22. on thin paper. A little darkening. Charivari adverts and text to the verso. 24,5cm x 36cm. All three are held in the collection of Les Musées de la Ville de Paris. They have an excellent collection of prints and engravings about Paris. First edition.

Un peu de noircissement. Annonces et texte du Charivari au verso. 24,5cm x 36cm. Les trois sont conservés dans la collection des Musées de la Ville de Paris. Ils possèdent une excellente collection d'estampes et de gravures sur Paris.

France: NP, C1975. A large, limited edition lithograph on stiff paper / light card. On an orange background that fades to a darker shade on one side of the sheet (intentionally) the three runners have identical faces. The style, which is very 1970's in its lines, is similar to the work of Carzou or perhaps some works by Bernard Buffet. it is signed in pencil (but we cannot really make out the artist's name) and numbered in a limitation of 100 copies. We have been unable to identify the image online. No significant damage. White to the rear with fractional darkening. A large piece. The sheet is 56.5cm x 76.5cm.

Attractive blue hardback percaline with a gilt and silver decorative title to the front boards. Gilt titles to the spine. A little bumping and edge wear, but overall in excellent clean condition. All edges gilt. Internally in very good condition. Attractive toned photogravure / collotype to each page, adorning verses by eminent poets, some written especially for this work. There is light foxing throughout the work. A lovely piece of end of the century illustration. Unpaginated but approximately 80 pages. 23cm x 18cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 21369175.

London: R. Ackermann, 1828. A lovely copy of this first edition in the original orange blind stamped publisher's cloth. Binding is clean,, with a little bumping to the corners. Gilt to the spine is bright, but a little rubbed to the image of Tom himself. There is a small nick / loss to the head of the spine, and a small splash of water (?) damage to the front board, otherwise excellent. Owner's bookplate to the inside front board for Edward Francis Hutton.* Internally the book is in very good condition, with a little darkening to the page edges only. A few minor foxing spots. He was passionate about yachts, and one figures prominently on his bookplate. Of interest today, he built the 127 room Mar-a-lago as a winter residence in 1927. Donated to the nation on his wife's death in 1973, it was later acquired by Donald Trump, and proved temporarily useful for storing state secrets (allegedly).

S.P: S.P, C1880. First edition. An attractive engraving by L. Letrône showing ancient Basque tombstones. The engraving is a clear impression, with the title hand written below by the artist. Engraving is 9cm x 12cm on a sheet 20cm x 27.5cm. To the bottom of the sheet is written in in "To my dear cousin P. Monard... L Letrône." The page has moderate foxing. This sheet has been stuck to a backing sheet. Ludovic Letrône (1832-1889) was a French painter and draftsman. He is known for his landscape paintings, such as "Bords de la Nive (Basses-Pyrénées)" from 1874, and for his drawings and engravings, often related to architecture and sculpture. Letrône contributed illustrations to several publications, including works on the architecture and sculpture of the Hôtel Carnavalet and the Louvre, and he also produced drawings for books on art history and museum collections.

La gravure mesure 9 cm x 12 cm sur une feuille de 20 cm x 27,5 cm. Au bas de la feuille est écrit "A mon cher cousin P. Monard... L Letrône." La page présente des rousseurs modérées. Ce feuillet a été collé sur une feuille de support. Ludovic Letrône (1832-1889) était un peintre et dessinateur français. Il est connu pour ses peintures de paysages, comme "Bords de la Nive (Basses-Pyrénées)" de 1874, et pour ses dessins et gravures, souvent liés à l'architecture et à la sculpture. Letrône a illustré plusieurs publications, notamment des ouvrages sur l'architecture et la sculpture de l'hôtel Carnavalet et du Louvre, et a également réalisé des dessins pour des livres sur l'histoire de l'art et les collections de musées.

Each of the nine colour plates with its own tissue guard. Corners of boards rubbed and slight sun fading to boards. Hinge slightly weak but holding. (This has been reinforced with archival tape to the inside rear hinge). Text in Dutch. 350 x 270 mm (13¾ x 10¾ inches). Rare publication of theater decorations by the Dutch artist François-Joseph PfeifferJr. (Liège 1778-1835). Illustrated with 9 lithograph plates (including portrait) with facing tissue guards. With accompanying letter-press text within red ornamental borders. Contains a biography by Gerit van Ernst Koning (1794-1853), and verse descriptions by J. van Lennep (1802-1868). It also includes a short list of theater scenes created by Pfeiffer. Première édition. Reliure originale en toile marron, avec une lyre décorative dorée à l'orfin sur les plats avant et arrière. Monte Carlo: Aux Éditions du Livre, 1952. One of 5000 copies on numbered Vellum Crève-Coeur. In original board cover and slipcase. Softback in glassine. Created in 1928, this tale of morality was Marcel Pagnol's first theatrical success. Full of colour illustrations by Albert Dubout. Text in French. Slipcase has some rubbing / fading to outer slipcase. Inside cover and book are in an excellent condition. 220 x 160 mm (8¾ x 6¼ inches). Un des 5000 exemplaires sur Vélin Crève-Cœur numérotés. Dans sa housse et son étui d'origine. Couverture souple en cristal. Créé en 1928, ce conte de moralité est le premier succès théâtral de Marcel Pagnol. Plein d'illustrations en couleurs par Albert Dubout. Texte en français. L'étui a quelques frottements / décoloration sur l'étui extérieur. La couverture intérieure et le livre sont en excellent état. 220x160mm

Paris: Chez G. Audran, C1700. A lovely copy of this engraved plate, by Sébastien Leclerc exunt Daumont. 10cm x 18.5cm. Under contemporary glass and in simple brass frame. We can find three variations of this plate. (1) One of the plates in Leclerc's work for the Duc de Bourgogne. This rare work contained sixty plates, with hunting and pastoral scenes. The Bonhams' copy of this (they used this plate as one of their examples) has no number, engraver or artist printed to it. We can only find a single example of this plate. (2) The copy held in the Musée Carnavalet histoire Paris (Ref. G.16639). This is also without any text and is reversedin aspect, so the bell tower is found to the left of the image. We can only find this one example of the reversed plate. (3) Our copy has #3 to the top right of the plate (presumably referencing its placement in the Duc's book). It also has Le Clerc Inv. to the bottom left, and Daumont ex. to the bottom right. Finally, there is a capital Q to the bottom left. We cannot find another example of this version. Neither can we identify any precedence, but our copy appears to be from the original work rather than a later copy. Dating from the Bonhams' citation. A clean, tidy copy with fractional darkening. This piece is enhanced by the antique glass used to frame the work. It is clearly hand made, and has the slight bubbles and marks or early glass. A rare work.

(1) Une des planches de l'ouvrage de Leclerc pour le duc de Bourgogne. Cet ouvrage rare contenait soixante planches, avec des scènes de chasse et des scènes pastorales. L'exemplaire de Bonhams' (qui a utilisé cette planche comme un de ses exemples) ne porte pas de numéro, de graveur ou d'artiste. Nous ne pouvons trouver qu'un seul exemplaire de cette planche. (2) L'exemplaire conservé au Musée Carnavalet histoire Paris (Réf. G.16639). Elle est également sans texte et inversée, le clocher se trouvant à gauche de l'image. Nous n'avons trouvé qu'un seul exemple de cette plaque inversée. (3) Notre exemplaire porte le n° 3 en haut à droite de la plaque (sans doute en référence à son emplacement dans le livre du Duc). Il porte également Le Clerc Inv. en bas à gauche, et Daumont ex. en bas à droite. Enfin, un Q majuscule figure en bas à gauche. Nous n'avons pas trouvé d'autre exemple de cette version. Nous ne pouvons pas non plus identifier d'antériorité, mais notre exemplaire semble provenir de l'œuvre originale et non d'une copie postérieure. Datation de la citation de Bonhams'. Exemplaire propre et bien rangé, avec des assombrissements partiels. Cette pièce est mise en valeur par le verre antique utilisé pour encadrer l'œuvre. Il est clairement fait à la main et présente les légères bulles et marques du verre ancien. Une œuvre rare.

Paris: Société du Mercure de France, 1908. A very nice copy of this collection of designs by Donnay for Mockel. First edition. No text. Cream soft covers with are effectively a portfolio, with glassine protection (the latter a little darkened). Front cover is also the title. 16 pages, loose in the portfolio. Pages fractionally darkened, but overall in excellent condition. This work, of unknown limitation, accompanied the book of children's tales by Mockel. (The designs also appeared in the book). The limitation is unknown, but there was also a limited edition of 20 copies on Japon (which was sewn into the cover). This copy has never been sewn and was clearly intended to be loose in folds). 225 by 150mm (8¾ by 6 inches). Only one library holding (The Belgium state library). Conforms to WorldCat / FirstSearch OCLC: 1400545846. Albert Mockel was a significant Belgian poet, who came to represent the Symbolist movement. It was he who established the name "Wallonie" through his writing and he was an early Walloon activist. Auguste Donnay was a Belgian painter, illustrator, lithographer and poster artist. He was a lecturer at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liege. Hiis early work was firmly Art Nouveau. Here he hovers between Nouveau and Deco. He suffered from chronic depression throughout his life, and committed suicide in 1921.

Cet ouvrage, dont la limitation est inconnue, accompagnait le livre de contes pour enfants de Mockel. Les dessins figurent également dans le livre. Albert Mockel était un poète belge important, qui représentait le mouvement symboliste. C'est lui qui a créé le nom « Wallonie » par ses écrits et il a été l'un des premiers activistes wallons. Auguste Donnay était un peintre, illustrateur, lithographe et affichiste belge. Il a été professeur à l'Académie royale des beaux-arts de Liège. Ses premières œuvres s'inscrivent résolument dans l'Art nouveau. Ici, il oscille entre le Nouveau et le Déco. Il souffrit de dépression chronique tout au long de sa vie et se suicida en 1822.

Cairo: Émile Béchard, 1875. First edition. Entitled No. 58 dervish faintly to the bottom left of the photograph, and clearer, Béchard to the bottom right. Undated but Circa 1875. A lovely image, showing three Dervishes, on the steps of the Damascus mosque. With their distinctive sikke headgear (tall cylindrical hats) and slippers. One is either smoking a pipe or playing a very long whistle! The image is clearly posed, but still gives an authentic impression of Damascus circa 1875. Photograph is 25.5cm x 22cm under a cream bevelled passe partout of 35.5cm x 32cm. Both are very clean and tidy. Passe partout has a slight bump in the top right cover. A rare piece of photography. This item is catalogued in the Philip Maritz Collection of Émile Béchard's Photographs of Egypt, which forms part of the American University in Cairo. Catalogue Ref. SC-2016-09.
Émile Béchard was a notable French photographer born in 1844, recognized for his work in Egypt from around 1869 to 1880, especially in Cairo. He is best known for his evocative portraits and meticulously composed scenes depicting Egyptian daily life, including images of shopkeepers, merchants, workers, and dancers, framed through an orientalist perspective.

Une belle image montrant trois derviches sur les marches de la mosquée de Damas. Avec leurs coiffes sikke caractéristiques (hauts chapeaux cylindriques) et leurs pantoufles. L'un d'eux fume une pipe ou joue d'un très long sifflet ! L'image est clairement mise en scène, mais donne néanmoins une impression authentique de Damas vers 1875. La photographie mesure 25,5 cm x 22 cm sous un passe-partout biseauté crème de 35,5 cm x 32 cm. Les deux sont très propres et bien entretenus. Le passe-partout présente une légère bosse dans le coin supérieur droit. Une photographie rare. N/A: N/P, 1916. Six sketches on two sheets of laid paper and a smaller page. These look to have been removed from a sketch book. One is a full head of an officer, looking to one side in pastel, pencil and highlighted in white. We have not been able to identify the soldier (there were a lot of peaked caps and thick moustaches at the time!) but the sketch is signed Emmanuelle (?) and dated 6.6.16. The second sheet has a draught sketch of the same figure, and a second sketch in pencil, but also with white highlights. This sheet is also signed and dated. (the following day). The third sheet has three small pencil sketches. To our non expert glance it seems to show one French, one English and one American head. The sketches are skilfully executed. There is no place mentioned, but they are French. It is possible that the artist was a woman, perhaps a nurse at the front ? The paper is a little ragged to the edges, and has slight edgewear. Overall though, beautiful sketches. Sheets are each 31cm x 23cm.

. Six esquisses sur deux feuilles de papier vergé et une page plus petite. Ils semblent avoir été retirés d'un carnet de croquis. L'un d'eux représente la tête d'un officier, regardant de côté, au pastel, au crayon et surligné en blanc. Nous n'avons pas pu identifier le soldat (il y avait beaucoup de casquettes à visière et de moustaches épaisses à l'époque !) mais le croquis est signé Emmanuelle ( ?) et daté du 6.6.16. La deuxième feuille contient un croquis de la même figure, et une deuxième esquisse au crayon, mais également avec des rehauts de blanc. Cette feuille est également signée et datée. (le lendemain). La troisième feuille comporte trois petites esquisses au crayon. Pour notre regard de non-spécialiste, il semble qu'il s'agisse d'une tête française, d'une tête anglaise et d'une tête américaine. Les esquisses sont habilement exécutées. Aucun lieu n'est mentionné, mais ils sont français. Il est possible que l'artiste ait été une femme, peut-être une infirmière au front ? Le papier est un peu abîmé sur les bords et présente une légère usure. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit de belles esquisses. Les feuilles mesurent chacune 31 cm x 23 cm.

It bears a close similarity to work that Perraudin painted of La Seine, port d'Issy. In very good, clean condition, with just a touch of darkening to the left edge. Image is 30cm x 40cm. The sheet is 50cm x 65cm. On heavy laid Arches paper. Perraudin, Paul (1907–1993) — Born at Moret-sur-Loing, Perraudin studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs, later joining its teaching staff in 1942 as professor. From 1959 he devoted himself chiefly to marine painting, travelling widely, exhibiting frequently, and illustrating a number of fine press editions, for which he received numerous distinctions. He died at Marseille in 1993, following a final exhibition.

Elle présente une grande similitude avec l'œuvre que Perraudin a peinte de La Seine, port d'Issy. En très bon état, propre, avec juste une légère trace de noircissement sur le bord gauche. L'image mesure 30 cm x 40 cm. La feuille mesure 50 cm x 65 cm. Sur papier Arches épais. Perraudin, Paul (1907-1993) — Né à Moret-sur-Loing, Perraudin a étudié à l'École des Arts Décoratifs, avant de rejoindre son corps enseignant en 1942 en tant que professeur. À partir de 1959, il se consacre principalement à la peinture marine, voyage beaucoup, expose fréquemment et illustre plusieurs éditions de presse de qualité, pour lesquelles il reçoit de nombreuses distinctions. Il meurt à Marseille en 1993, après une dernière exposition.
