C1890. held in a folding cover. Cover is ornately decorated to the front and blind embossed to the rear. Clean and tidy with fractional darkening. Inside, the flaps are a pale grey and also blind stamped. Slight marking where a paper clip (now gone) has been holding something. Inside are a title and 12 cards. The title has the the list of photographs to the rear. Albumen photographs are pasted onto the card, printed to recto only. All in excellent condition with just a slight darkening and few minor marks to the title card.

London: R. Ackermann's Repository, 1808. Plate number 9 from Ackermann's "Microcosm of London". A lovely aquatint. The architectural details were drawn by Pugin, and Rowlandson drew the figures (both are credited on the sheet). The aquatinting was done by J. Bluck. Ackermann produced this work between 1807 and 1810. One of the greatest of the colour plate books. "The plates by Rowlandson and Pugin present an unrivaled picture of London in early 19th century, of historic value, as many of the buildings no longer exist." (Tooley).
Condition: Very nice clean impression of this plate, with good colouring. A very small closed foxing spot to the bottom edge of the plate.

The letters SPG stand for Simon Philip Goudsmit, the founder of the Dutch department store chain 'De Bijenkorf' (The Beehive). Nicolaas Johannes van de Vecht was a Dutch watercolorist, draftsman and lithographer. He was a student at the Arts and Crafts School Quellinus Amsterdam and the State School for Arts and Crafts Amsterdam. In addition to watercolor painting, drawing and lithography, he was a book binding designer.

A complex scene is set up - and the central subject is blind folded and brought into the scene. The blindfold is then briefly removed - and the photograph taken. They are then apparently blind folded again, and only see what was really there when the photograph is produced.

Sir Frank William Brangwyn (1867 - 1956) was an Anglo-Welsh painter, engraver and illustrator. Although born in Belgium, his family returned to Wales in 1875 where he received his artistic education, first with his father and then with renowned artist William Morris.
