    France: NP, 1907. An attractive sketch of a motor race, with two cars battling it out. Ink sketch, bordered with black ink. Dated 1907. The cars, each with a driver and a passenger, are neck and neck, with dust behind them. The certainly appear early cars, with crank handles and solid tyres. They are numbered Two and Four to the radiators. The sheet is clean, but there is edge wear to two sides with loss, this has cut into the black frame, but not the sketch itself. A closed tear intrudes on the left hand side, but could be repaired. The drawing is 21.5cm x 30.5cm on a sheet of 24.5cm x 34cm. Blank verso. Pinholes to the corners.…

Les voitures, chacune avec un conducteur et un passager, sont au coude à coude, avec de la poussière derrière elles. Il s'agit certainement de voitures anciennes, avec des manivelles et des pneus pleins. Les radiateurs sont numérotés deux et quatre. La feuille est propre, mais il y a une usure des bords sur deux côtés avec une perte, ce qui a coupé le cadre noir, mais pas le croquis lui-même. Une déchirure fermée apparaît sur le côté gauche, mais elle pourrait être réparée. Le dessin mesure 21,5 cm x 30,5 cm sur une feuille de 24,5 cm x 34 cm. Verso vierge. Trous d'épingle dans les coins.

The boards are lightly bumped at the corners, but overall in good condition, with a neat ink written owner's name - dated 1890 - to the half title.

L'œuvre d'art mesure 22 cm x 17 cm. Page / Passe partout 33.5 x 25.5 cm. Georges Goursat (1863-1934), connu sous le nom de SEM, était un caricaturiste français célèbre à la Belle Époque. Né à Périgueux, il publie ses caricatures en 1888. Il dessine des affiches et commence à produire des illustrations pour L'Illustration et Le Rire. This copy comes with the signed coloured lithograph "L'angoisse" (#59/185 of the lithograph) Drawn in sanguine, black crayon and lead pencil, this is produced on high quality art paper and is in its own folder. The book is also signed and dedicated to the front end paper to Jacques and Ghislaine Berniere, dated Riyad 1990. Berniere was the French ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 1986-1991 (including throughout the Gulf War) and was later the ambassador to Belgium. Vicari's visits to Saudi Arabia are well documented and photographed in the catalogue. In addition there is a French menu card dated the same day (Presumably from the embassy) showing the dinner menu. To the verso, Vicari has drawn a sketch of some of the attendees, and signed this. The book is black cloth, with gilt titles and a colour picture by Vicari tipped onto the front board. In good, clean, sound condition. The book is held within a black clamshell case. There is a little rubbing and marking to the cover, but still attractive. 310 pages. Andrew Vicari was a Welsh portrait painter, who became the official portrait artist of the Saudi Royal Family (where there are three museums dedicated to his work.) He died, aged 83 in 2016. 360 by 270mm (14¼ by 10¾ inches).

Andrew Vicari était un portraitiste gallois qui est devenu le portraitiste officiel de la famille royale saoudienne (où trois musées sont consacrés à son travail). On y trouve des représentations de vaches, de chiens, de pigeons, de chats, de faisans, de cochons, de moutons, de chèvres, de poules, de chevaux, etc. Les couvertures sont propres et bien rangées, avec quelques frottements sur les planches. Le livre est propre et soigné, avec un petit relâchement de la reliure. La lithographie est en très bon état. 24 pages, 12 en pleine chromolithographie et 12 imprimées en gris. Bien qu'il n'y ait pas de marques d'impression ou d'éditeur, il semble qu'il s'agisse d'une publication en langue étrangère de G Lowensohn, qui était un des premiers spécialistes de la lithographie en couleur dans les livres pour enfants, et qui imprimait souvent ses œuvres pour des éditeurs étrangers sans marques d'identification. 22cm x 31cm.

In folds (not sewn or bound) The front cover is a lovely art nouveau illustration, with a programme surrounded by a nouveau design of flowers to the rear cover. The covers are lightly foxed, and to the rear cover is a small closed tear (now repaired with archival tape). 20 pages (including covers). Stories and illustrations throughout. Attractive sepia coloured double page illustration to the centre. Internally the work is clean and bright, with just a touch of darkening / light foxing. 39cm x 27.5cm. The féte was to raise funds for the fund for those injured in line of duty. The brochure contains drawings by the best-known illustrators of the day, as well as the programme for the party held on 5th and 6th June 1886 in the Bois de Boulogne. The "Caisse des victimes du devoir" (Victims of Duty Fund), was set up in 1885. It was intended to help people injured in an act of duty, such as fire fighters, or their families (in the event of death) and to compensate victims of disasters. Histoires et illustrations tout au long du programme. Jolie illustration en double page de couleur sépia au centre. À l'intérieur, l'ouvrage est propre et lumineux, avec juste une légère trace de noircissement/légères rousseurs. 39 cm x 27,5 cm. La fête avait pour but de collecter des fonds pour les personnes blessées dans l'exercice de leurs fonctions. La brochure contient des dessins des illustrateurs les plus connus de l'époque, ainsi que le programme de la fête qui s'est tenue les 5 et 6 juin 1886 au Bois de Boulogne. La « Caisse des victimes du devoir » a été créée en 1885. Elle avait pour but d'aider les personnes blessées dans l'exercice de leurs fonctions, telles que les pompiers, ou leurs familles (en cas de décès) et d'indemniser les victimes de catastrophes. Le reste de l'ouvrage est en bon état, propre, avec un léger assombrissement des pages et une légère marque sur le bord supérieur (n'affectant pas le texte). Les planches dépliantes sont en assez bon état, avec un peu de noircissement et de bosses sur les bords. Quelques petites déchirures fermées sur les bords de certaines planches seulement. The title is added in Dutch in manuscript to the bottom right, and the number 114 to the bottom left. Small area of loss to the top edge of border, hidden by passe partout. A scarce item.

    Daniel Raap (1703–1754) was a Dutch porcelain merchant from Amsterdam who played a significant role during the Orangist revolution in the Netherlands between 1747 and 1751. He was known for his agitation against the ruling Regent class, advocating for greater public influence in government and supporting the restoration of the stadtholderate under William IV, Prince of Orange. Raap, along with other activists, published pamphlets demanding democratic reforms and hereditary stadtholder rule. He organized petitions and called for the direct election of militia captains, the restoration of guild privileges, and auctioning of vacant public offices. His activities led to William IV intervening in Dutch politics, but when the new city government remained dominated by the traditional regent families, Raap found himself at odds with both more radical democrats and Orangists. By the time of his death, Raap's former popularity had turned to hostility; riots occurred at his funeral, and his coffin was even destroyed by a mob. Première édition. Raap et son allié Teepken en enfer devant le Diable sur son trône. Les détails de l'image sont numérotés de 1 à 5, mais il n'y a pas de légende. L'image a été collée sur une feuille de papier et conservée sous passe partout. Nous n'avons pas trouvé d'autres copies de ce tableau à vendre, et la seule copie que nous avons pu localiser se trouve au Rijksmuseum (RP-P-OB-84.474), également sans légende. La surface gravée est de 21cm x 31cm. La feuille mesure 25 cm x 34 cm. Passe partout mesure 35 cm x 50 cm. La feuille est un peu assombrie et présente une déchirure fermée sur un bord (qui n'affecte pas la zone gravée). Le titre est ajouté en néerlandais dans le manuscrit en bas à droite, et le numéro 114 en bas à gauche. Petite zone de perte au bord supérieur de la bordure, cachée par un passe-partout. Une pièce rare.
