With contributions by Jean-Jacques Aillagon, Brassai, Gilberte Brassai, Roger Grenier, Henry Miller, Jacques Prevert, Werner Spies. Both book and jacket are in a very good to near fine condition. The inside of the dust jacket reads, in part: Here are Brassai's iconic scenes of nocturnal Paris with its prostitutes and thugs, its night workers, cafes, dance halls, and theaters; here are the fog-shrouded streets, monuments, and bridges; and here is the literary and artistic elite of the Parisian avant-garde, whom Brassai counted among his friends. Alongside these images, and providing a deeper understanding of his working method, are many previously unpublished contact prints and variations of familiar shots taken from a different angle, differently framed, or as part of a sequence that constitutes a veritable short story on film. Beyond these, there are examples of Brassai's nude studies and magnifications of commonplace objects, the engraved photographic plates that he called transmutations, his drawings and sculpted pebbles, the graffiti he found so fascinating - indeed, everything to which he turned his imaginative mind throughout a long, productive life. 319 pages. 310 x 250 mm (12¼ x 9¾ inches).

319 pages. 310 x 250 mm (12¼ x 9¾ inches).

Although born in Belgium, his family returned to Wales in 1875 where he received his artistic education, first with his father and then with renowned artist William Morris. Brangwyn's relationship with one of his admirers and supporters, the Belgian poet Emile Verhaeren, led to his being commissioned to create multiple illustrations for Verhaeren's poetry book, Les Villes Tentaculaires

    Chalkboard book.

Paris: 1880. A bit of a curiosity, this small book has no maker's details or date. It comprises a hardback cloth binding with a lithograph of two girls dancing in front of a mirror. The date is based on their clothing! This looks French and was purchased from a French Marche de puce. Inside are black and papers and 3 leaves (6 pages) of stiff chalk board - ready to be chalked upon. The edges of the book are rather rubbed and the binding has cracking and loss, but nevertheless a nice item. 90 by 60mm (3½ by 2¼ inches).
