St Pierre Rome St Peter's Rome

Paris: S.P, C1935. An original ink sketch of St Peter's in Rome by Albert Lemasson. An attractive ink wash / black and grey water colour of the most famous church in the world. A nice view, with the foreground fountain much fainter, which allows the basillica and dome to be seen clearly. 32.5cm x 50cm. Signed and named to the bottom right edge. Mainly clean, with a few pencil marks still evident (this is probably a preparatory sketch). There is a little darkening to the edges and a few very light foxing spots. Blank and clean to the rear. Albert Lemasson was a French painter (1892-1982. He was classically trained and entered the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris in 1919. Lemasson specialized for about 25 years mainly in church decoration through frescoes, often working with his brother Paul Lemasson. Besides frescoes, he painted a variety of works including portraits, landscapes, and scenes from his travels in France, Italy, Spain, and Greece using oil, watercolor, ink, and other mediums. He exhibited his works in several galleries in Paris, Nantes, and Bordeaux over many decades.
