France: NP, 1907. An attractive sketch of a motor race, with two cars battling it out. Ink sketch, bordered with black ink. Dated 1907. The cars, each with a driver and a passenger, are neck and neck, with dust behind them. The certainly appear early cars, with crank handles and solid tyres. They are numbered Two and Four to the radiators. The sheet is clean, but there is edge wear to two sides with loss, this has cut into the black frame, but not the sketch itself. A closed tear intrudes on the left hand side, but could be repaired. The drawing is 21.5cm x 30.5cm on a sheet of 24.5cm x 34cm. Blank verso. Pinholes to the corners. Une jolie esquisse d'une course automobile, avec deux voitures qui s'affrontent. Esquisse à l'encre, bordée d'encre noire. Daté de 1907. Les voitures, chacune avec un conducteur et un passager, sont au coude à coude, avec de la poussière derrière elles. Il s'agit certainement de voitures anciennes, avec des manivelles et des pneus pleins. Les radiateurs sont numérotés deux et quatre. La feuille est propre, mais il y a une usure des bords sur deux côtés avec une perte, ce qui a coupé le cadre noir, mais pas le croquis lui-même. Une déchirure fermée apparaît sur le côté gauche, mais elle pourrait être réparée. Le dessin mesure 21,5 cm x 30,5 cm sur une feuille de 24,5 cm x 34 cm. Verso vierge. Trous d'épingle dans les coins.

Lightly underneath: LONDON VIRTUE & CO. LIMITED. Darkened paper. Unframed. Lower left corner has small loss - not affecting image. This is still ideal for framing. Verso has signs of adhesive around edge, which has caused slight darkening to very edges on paper. 290 x 195 mm (11½ x 7¾ inches).

France: NA, 1840. An attractive surreal sketch of two animal figures in the style of Grandville. One is a bird in clothing, with a violin under its arm. The other is a small, indistinguishable bird, in clothes and a hat. The sheet has been removed from a sketch book at some point. Drawn in ink. Page is slightly dirty but still attractive. Sketch is approximately 12cm x 10cm. Sheet is 20cm x 12cm. An unusual caricature.

L'autre est un petit oiseau indiscernable, habillé et coiffé d'un chapeau. La feuille a été retirée d'un carnet de croquis à un moment donné. Dessiné à l'encre. La page est légèrement sale mais reste attrayante. L'esquisse mesure environ 12 cm x 10 cm. La feuille mesure 20 cm x 12 cm. Une caricature inhabituelle.

1900. An attractive signed original watercolour of a slumped clerk, under a pile of papers, with more falling upon him. No date. On heavy paper, and beneath cream passepartout. The illustration is in excellent condition. Signed by SEM to the lower right corner. Passepartout is neat, but with a touch of darkening to it. Artwork 22 x 17 cm. Page / Passepartout 33.5 x 25.5 cm. Georges Goursat (1863-1934), known as SEM, was a French caricaturist famous during the Belle Époque. Born in Périgueux, he published his caricatures in 1888. He designed posters, and began to produce illustrations for L'Illustration and Le Rire. After a while as a war correspondent, he returned to his caricatures. In 1923, he was made an officer of the Legion of Honour. He died in 1934.

L'illustration est en excellent état. Signée par SEM dans le coin inférieur droit. Le passe-partout est net, mais il est un peu assombri. L'œuvre d'art mesure 22 cm x 17 cm. Page / Passe partout 33.5 x 25.5 cm. Georges Goursat (1863-1934), connu sous le nom de SEM, était un caricaturiste français célèbre à la Belle Époque. Parme: Editions Artegrafica Silva, 1986. A very nice copy of this limited edition Catalogue Raisonne with several editions. Copy 779/3000 (numbered to colophon at the rear). This copy comes with the signed coloured lithograph "L'angoisse" (#59/185 of the lithograph) Drawn in sanguine, black crayon and lead pencil, this is produced on high quality art paper and is in its own folder. The book is also signed and dedicated to the front end paper to Jacques and Ghislaine Berniere, dated Riyad 1990. Berniere was the French ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 1986-1991 (including throughout the Gulf War) and was later the ambassador to Belgium. Vicari's visits to Saudi Arabia are well documented and photographed in the catalogue. In addition there is a French menu card dated the same day (Presumably from the embassy) showing the dinner menu. To the verso, Vicari has drawn a sketch of some of the attendees, and signed this. The book is black cloth, with gilt titles and a colour picture by Vicari tipped onto the front board. In good, clean, sound condition. The book is held within a black clamshell case. There is a little rubbing and marking to the cover, but still attractive. 310 pages. Andrew Vicari was a Welsh portrait painter, who became the official portrait artist of the Saudi Royal Family (where there are three museums dedicated to his work.) He died, aged 83 in 2016. 360 by 270mm (14¼ by 10¾ inches).

Il y a également une carte de menu française datée du même jour (probablement de l'ambassade) montrant le menu du dîner. Au verso, Vicari a dessiné un croquis de certains participants et l'a signé. Le livre est en tissu noir, avec des titres dorés et une image en couleur de Vicari collée sur la première page. Il est en bon état, propre et sain. Le livre se trouve dans un étui noir. La couverture est légèrement frottée et marquée, mais reste attrayante. 310 pages. Andrew Vicari était un portraitiste gallois qui est devenu le portraitiste officiel de la famille royale saoudienne (où trois musées sont consacrés à son travail). NP, C1850. A lovely pair of hand finished copies of Starnina's classic works. Two oval illustrations, one portraying the Angel of the Annunciation. The other the Virgin of the Annunciation. Each are 23cm x 18cm. Both are printed and then over painted on thick paper / thin card, and laid onto a backing card. The images are reproductions with gilt and other hand colouring done in profusion. Clean and tidy pictures. The background cards are both darkened, and the Virgin backing hard has some staining to it. The verso of each card has darkening, which may suggest that these have come from a book or album, but we don't know which. Sheets are each 28cm x 22cm. Gherardo di Jacopo Starnina (1360-1413) was a Florentine (Italian) painter.

Chacune mesure 23 cm x 18 cm. Elles sont toutes deux imprimées et repeintes sur du papier épais/carte fine, et posées sur une carte de support. Les images sont des reproductions avec des dorures et d'autres colorations faites à la main à profusion. Les images sont propres et nettes. Les cartes de fond sont toutes deux assombries, et la carte de support Virgin présente quelques taches. Le verso de chaque carte est assombri, ce qui peut suggérer qu'elles proviennent d'un livre ou d'un album, mais nous ne savons pas lequel. Les feuilles mesurent chacune 28 cm x 22 cm. Gherardo di Jacopo Starnina (1360-1413) était un peintre florentin (italien).

Signed and numbered by Gueuell to the bottom of the print. Total limitation of 200. Very good, clean condition, with very slight darkening to the page only. Aquatint is 18,75cm x 11.5cm. Sheet is 25cm x 16cm.

1929. Gorgeous oval shaped drypoint etching with aquatint, and small detail / colouring by hand. The work is unsigned - but most likely by Jean Gilles. This is a fantastic example of the Années folles (France in the 1920s) passion for what was known as 'Boudoir Art'. Gilles worked in the style of Louis Icart or Jean Hardy. Under white cardboard mount. Perfect for framing. The etching and the mount are both in a very good condition, with just a small spot or two (covered by mount). Whole item including card mount 600 x 400 mm (23½ x 15¾ inches). Image 370 x 195 mm. Superbe gravure à la pointe sèche de forme ovale avec aquatinte, et petit détail / coloration à la main. L'oeuvre n'est pas signée - mais très probablement de Jean Gilles. C'est un exemple fantastique de la passion des Années folles pour ce qu'on appelait «l'art boudoir». Gilles a travaillé dans le style de Louis Icart ou de Jean Hardy. Sous passe-partout en carton blanc. Parfait pour l'encadrement. La gravure et le montage sont tous deux en très bon état, avec juste une petite tache ou deux (couvertes par le montage). Article entier, y compris le support de carte 600 x 400 mm.. London: G. Baxter, 1853. Two framed prints of famous images. One is entitled: "Australia. News from Home". This first depicting a group of men inside a wooden building in Australia. Two of whom appear indigenous. The other entitled: "News from Abroad". This showing a family gathered around for the reading of a letter, whilst on the wall there is a poster promoting emigration to Australia. Both from paintings by Harden Sidney Melville, and engraved, printed and published by G. Baxter. They are cropped, so no longer have the Baxter stamp at the bottom. Tipped on to card and mounted in wooden frames under glass. Each measures: 110 mm x 150 mm. Total size including frame: 260 mm x 290 mm. They have a label to the rear which says they were framed by The Petersfield Book Shop. In very good condition. (Price is for the pair).
