Two original water colours of the church features Deux aquarelles originales des éléments de l'église

Paris: S.P, 1937. Two original water colour drawings of church architectural detail by Albert Lemasson. Both are lovely representations of medieval church architecture. The first is for a rez-de-chaussée (level floor change) in a chapelle at Frejus. Frejus is on the Côte d'Azur and hosts Léonce Cathedral which has painted cloisters and a baptistry with Roman columns. This is an attractive sketch showing some of the ancient friezes in the cathedral. This is painted onto glassine which has been tipped onto a stiff sheet of card. The card is quite darkened and has a little edgewear. Size of sheet is 34.5cm x 49cm. The second detail is painted directly onto a larger sheet of card. This is a detail of ancient fragments from the Cathedral at Bayeux. It shows the bottom half of Christ cruficied, with two men standing alongside. The water colour is a lovely and accurate representation, showing the damage to the fresco as well as giving a good impression of the detail. Titled in pencil beneath. Painting is 30cm x 43cm. The sheet is 45cm x 58cm. There is a split to the top edge of the sheet where folded, with an old repair to this. Neither sheet is signed, but came from Lemasson's estate, and the handwriting conforms with the other works that came with it.

Albert Lemasson was a French painter (1892-1982. He was classically trained and entered the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris in 1919. Lemasson specialized for about 25 years mainly in church decoration through frescoes, often working with his brother Paul Lemasson. Besides frescoes, he painted a variety of works including portraits, landscapes, and scenes from his travels in France, Italy, Spain, and Greece using oil, watercolor, ink, and other mediums. He exhibited his works in several galleries in Paris, Nantes, and Bordeaux over many decades.

It is possible that these are an initial proof for the book. Each image is 21.5cm x 14cm. The sheet is 38cm x 56cm. Unusually, Lemasson hasn't identified the topic or signed the sheets (other examples we have sold have all identified the subject). It is more likely that these are early sketches for some of his works showing Rome. The sheet is somewhat foxed and darkened, with a little edgewear. Still an interesting and attractive pair of water colours.

This is probably a preliminary sketch for a larger work, as the edges are not neatly finished, and a finished work would be unlikely to have a proof for a book as backing card. The title is written into a dune, and Lemasson liked it so much he signed it twice! Some edgewear and chipping / creasing with closed tears and fractional loss to the edges. An attractive piece. 38cm x 57cm.

38cm x 57cm.

The image shows Orpheus playing his lyre to a jury, who are not looking particularly impressed. "Which proves that Orpheus couldn't soften the hearts of others."
Jules Renard (1833-1926), known by the pseudonym Draner, was a Belgian painter, illustrator and caricaturist. Born in Liege, he moved to Paris in 1861. He became known for his military caricatures and his work as a costume designer for theatre and opera houses in Paris. He died in Paris in 1926 at the age of 92.

    PUYOS, Jean [?]
    A Portrait of the author

Paris: S.P, 1892. First edition. An original pencil sketch. Although unsigned by the artist, this is probably a self portrait. Written across the page is an illegible place, and then "1er Mai 92 signé et approuvé l'auteur Jean Puyos". followed by the signature. Although we cannot find the name amongst authors or artists of the late nineteenth century, this is nevertheless and attractive caricature of a man wearing a hat and smoking. A little marking and staining. Laid onto backing card. 17cm x 14cm.

France: S.P, C1980. First edition / original artwork. Anonymous and unsigned. An original water colour illustration of a fox (?) watching himself or his neighbours through a complex system of pipes. The work appears to be a piece being prepared for a publication. There are pencil grid lines to the the edge. The "splatter effect" on the wall also continues beyond the pencil margin of the page (although doesn't affect the sign, so applied where the artist wanted). Although virtually finished, on close inspection, the fox figure may not have been completed (or may be intended to be a black and white figure). A little edgewear to the top right corner. . 50cm x 35cm.

Paris: France Soir, 1945. First edition / Original items A very nice photograph from the trial of Pétain and Laval. We cannot find any copy online of this press photograph having been used at the time. The trial of Philippe Pétain was among the most significant political events in post-World War II France, resulting in a conviction for treason due to his role in the Vichy regime and collaboration with Nazi Germany. The original silver gelatin press photograph was for use in France Soir* and has the newspaper stamp to the rear. The image shows trial judge André Ausset speaking at the trial of Pétain. 18cm x 23.5cm.

(*Libé Soir was a French newspaper, often linked with the Resistance during World War II, but it ceased publication in April 1947. After the liberation it transitioned into France Soir). Philippe Pétain, Marshal of France and leader of the Vichy government, was tried for treason in 1945, accused of betraying France by signing the armistice with Germany, refusing to move the government to North Africa, collaborating with the Nazis, and failing to resist German demands. The trial was dramatic and controversial, with public passions running high and a lack of clarity over what legally constituted treason given the extraordinary circumstances of the occupation. Pétain was convicted and sentenced to death, but his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment due to his age and prior military service. André Mornet was the General Prosecutor at the 1945 trials of key Vichy regime figures, including Laval and Pétain. He was a French magistrate who served at a high level before the Vichy government but later became a resistance member from 1943. At the trials he strongly pursued death sentences, famously delivering forceful and unyielding requisitions condemning them for treason and collaboration with the Germans. His prosecutorial style at these trials was marked by his call for a "sacred hatred" against the accused, emphasising their betrayal of France.

This has been professionally framed, and so is sealed to the edges. As a result we haven't been able to examine the page outside of the mount. Sketch is 27cm x 19.5cm. Mount is 34.5cm x 27cm.

The image shows a man in military uniform, wearing a bicorne hat with the word "conseil" on it. He is looking sceptically over his shoulder where an image shows "interieur" and a purse (?) over the words "Seance ou Zjaoul" (?) To the bottom is the line "Effet de la formation du Nouveau cabinet sur le Conseil communal ou notre ville." This is probably referring to the 1857 Belgian general election which was held on 10 December 1857 and was the first full general election since 1848. It was called by royal order dissolving the Chamber of Representatives. Before the election, Liberals held a majority in the Senate, and Catholics held a majority in the Chamber of Representatives. The election resulted in a victory for the Liberal Party, which won 70 out of 108 seats in the Chamber of Representatives, gaining a majority in both chambers of parliament. Charles Rogier became both the premier and the Interior minister (perhaps referenced with the word "Interieur" to the top).

Scottish Parade in Paris July 1918

Paris: N/P. A skilfully executed ink and coloured sketch done by Lesur in July 1918. This is a tricky sketch to place, and there are two options. Firstly - the date the artist has written is correct, and this is showing a Bastille Day parade on the 14th July 1918. This is certainly possible, as there were significant celebrations that day in Paris, but with the war still a long way from being won, the focus was on patriotic support rather than military parades. It is unlikely that Scottish regiments were parading in Paris on this day, as they were preparing for The Marne Offensive, which occurred a week later. The other alternative, is that this sketch is commemorating…

The other alternative, is that this sketch is commemorating the "fêtes de la Victoire" held on July 14th 1919 and that the artist has wrongly dated the work. Scottish regiments certainly took part on this parade. The 15th (Scottish) Division and the 51st (Highland) Division were part of the British XXII Corps. Both stationed near to Paris and involved in The Marne Offensive. Good, clean sketch on paper. The paper is slightly darkened, and there are a couple of light foxing spots. The colour is quite subtle, but present. A simple celebration of victory by a significant French artist. The frame is an ornate gilt frame, with glass. In very good condition, with a few bumps / nicks to the the frame only. Overall in very good condition. Sketch is 19cm x 26cm, Frame is 25cm x 31cm. Henri Victor Lesur (1863-1937), was a French artist born in Roubaix. Lesur trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and was a pupil of François Flameng. He was active in the French art scene, particularly towards the end of the 19th century, and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1887 to 1895. Lesur's work is characterized by elegant genre scenes and portraits, often inspired by the style of 18th-century French artists such as Watteau, Boucher, and Fragonard. Lesur's paintings often depicted scenes reminiscent of bygone luxury and playful Parisian society, created as a form of escapism for viewers and collectors. He continued to produce art until his death in 1937. Lesur's work is sometimes signed as V. H. Lesur.
