    FOX, Charles James.
A letter from the right honourable Charles James Fox, to the worthy and independent electors of the city and liberty of Westminster.

London: J. Debrett, 1793. Second edition. A nice copy of this open letter to his constituents, from the political radical Charles James Fox. It argued his radical position and opposition to war with France. Significant here, as France declared war on the United Kingdom six days later. Although this copy seems to lack the half title and a blank, as it begins with the title page, and the next leaf has the signature B, our copy follows the pagination of OCLC 6595972. So we assume that the second edition had no half title. Contents themselves are complete. To the end is a single leaf of advertisements from Debretts, end with a hanging "the" indicating there should be a second…

So we assume that the second edition had no half title. Contents themselves are complete. To the end is a single leaf of advertisements from Debretts, end with a hanging "the" indicating there should be a second leaf (here lacking). Sewn with twine (as with all other copies we have seen). The covers have a little marking and edgewear, but inside, the contents are clean and tidy throughout. [ii], 43, [1]. pages. Charles James Fox, a radical Whig reformer, was first elected for a rotten borough in 1768 whilst he was still underage. He first represented the significant borough of Westminster in 1780, and remained their member of parliament until his death in 1806. 20cm x 11.5cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 6595972.

Barcelona: Hermenegildo Miralles, 1894. A nice copy of the first edition of this bull fighting work. It has been restored at some point, with a new cloth spine. Rubbing to the edges of the covers with slight loss to the surface image. Several of the initial pages have had their edges repaired with archival tape, and some of the tissue guards to the front are creased. Leaves are a little handled, with some marking to them. This is one of the copies with a lithograph as a front board (pasted down to the hardback) rather than cloth. Every copy we can find online lists 27 lithographs. This is one of the copies with a lithograph as a front board (pasted down to the hardback) rather than cloth. Every copy we can find online lists 27 lithographs. The 28th mentioned in the title seems to be the cover. This copy is complete with the 4 pages with scores with coloured illustrations and borders. The artworks are by Daniel Perea (1836-1909), illustrator and the artistic director of the famous bullfighting magazine "La Lidia." Each lithograph is accompanied by a sheet with explanatory texts in Spanish, English and French. 270 by 360mm (10¾ by 14¼ inches).

270 x 360 mm.

  • A manuscript letter warning of desertion from Napoleonic ships by REGGIO, Duc de [Nicolas Charles Oudinot]
REGGIO, Duc de [Nicolas Charles Oudinot]
A manuscript letter warning of desertion from Napoleonic ships

Netherlands: 1810. A manuscript letter, from the look of it a secretarial copy, rather than the letter sent, with the signature of the Duc de Reggio. The letter outlines how an unknown sailor had made plans to escort French deserters from the Dutch villages of Noordwyk and Katwyk (just north of the Hague) to the English squadrons. One of the most important soldiers had been captured, and would stand trial, but the search continued for the sailor assisting the deserters. In the meantime, the villages had been placed under embargo, and no ships allowed to leave! The letter, in a neat hand, is written to "Monseigneur" (Giraud ?). It is dated 20 / 7th which is presumably 20th July without the year recorded. The year is probably 1810, as in April of this year, Oudinot was elevated to the rank of Duc de Reggio, and made responsible for the governance of Holland in replacement of Louis Napoleon (the Emperor's brother). Oudinot was the most injured soldier of the Napoleonic wars, having received 32 wounds, including two bullet wounds and nine sabre wounds. Despite these, he lived until 1847 when he died at the age of 80. We believe this to be the signature of the Duc, partly as a previous owner has written this provenance in pencil to the letter - but also in comparison with online copies of his autograph. These varied widely, but an example is shown in the pictures of this piece. 215 x 190mm (8½ x 7½ inches).

What is interesting about this copy, is that there is a gift inscription to the verso of the half title, stating that the book was taken from the Iranian Embassy shortly after the SAS had ended the embassy siege in 1980. The annotation claims that it was taken from the embassy an hour after the siege, but apart from this seeming unlikely (with security concerns at the time) the date given is actually 3 weeks after the end of the siege. There is no evidence that this is true but a strange thing to make up and we offer it as an interesting oddity! 414 pages. 220 by 150mm (8¾ by 6 inches).

London: Thos McLean, 1833. A nice copy of this political satire by Doyle. #261 in Doyle's series of political sketches. He expected to be re-confirmed in the post but Colonel Evans (Sir de Lacy Evans), as represented in the sketch, stepped in, and snatched away the seat for Westminster; and the re-appointment to the office of Irish Secretary was postponed sine die. He expected to be re-confirmed in the post but Colonel Evans (Sir de Lacy Evans), as represented in the sketch, stepped in, and snatched away the seat for Westminster; and the re-appointment to the office of Irish Secretary was postponed sine die. Sir F. Burdett, though stretching out his arm as if to save him, sees that assistance is in vain ; and the phlegmatic Lord Althorp, behind, appears to be saying, " Never mind, let him go." Print is 29cm x 37.5cm. It is pasted onto a mustard backing sheet of 35cm x 50cm. Both are in good, clean condition, with just a touch of light foxing to the satire. Small embossed stamp of authenticity (by Thos. McClean) to the lower left. A very nice copy. John Doyle was born in Dublin and moved to London in 1822 where he initially worked as a portrait lithographer. In 1827 Doyle began publishing political prints anonymously. From 1829-1851 Doyle published his well-known Political Sketches series, signing his work with the initials "HB" to hide his identity. See McClean, Thos. An Illustrative Key to the Political Sketches of H.B. #CCLXI. British Museum ref: 1856,0510.397.

"An Illustrative key to the Political Sketches of H.B......" (1861). P96. Lords Brougham and Plunket, on their return to London, from a visit to Windsor Castle, were caught in a fog and lost their way, chiefly, it was said, in consequence of the efforts which the postillions had been making to fortify themselves against the weather. Lord Brougham has mounted the ample shoulders of Lord Plunket, to take an observation, on the principle mentioned by Swift, who says, "It is with human intellects as it is with liquors, the lightest is ever at the top." The appearance of the drivers bears testimony to the fact that strong ale has had something to do with the disaster; and for the solution of the riddle of " Reform Bill," whose ale appears to have done the mischief.

John Doyle (1797–1868), known by the pen name H.B., was an influential Irish caricaturist, political cartoonist, painter, and lithographer. He is considered a pioneer of "polite caricature," a style that avoided grotesque exaggerations and instead relied on wit and subtle humor to critique political figures and events. His work marked a departure from the harsh satire of earlier artists like James Gillray and Thomas Rowlandson. In 1827 Doyle began publishing political prints anonymously. From 1829-1851 Doyle published his well-known Political Sketches series, signing his work with the initials "HB" to hide his identity.

Single album, or produced in a very few copies. Although this is a private collection, the indications are that it was produced by press photographers from the Daily Mail. To the title page, the address is Northcliffe House, London. EC4 - which was the headquarters of the Daily Mail at the time. A couple of the photographs can be identified as being used in the press at the time. Also identified in the pictures are Philip Rosenthal, of Rosenthal Porzellan, Germany.
