    Setting out in Life

London: S.W. Fores, 1796. A nice copy of this caricature, pasted onto a backing sheet. Sadly, the person who pasted it trimmed it very close, and around the title (see photo) so no publisher information showing. A father asks his son what career he wants. The son rather likes the idea of becoming a Bishop, with good pay for very little work! The print is clean and tidy, and could still be nicely framed. Print is 32cm x 22.5cm. Backing sheet is 36.5cm x 27cm. Charles Williams produced a reduced size version of this engraving in 1806 (Also printed by Fores, this version was had the plate numbered in lower left corner: No. 1 Pl. 4.) Although clearly the…

Charles Williams produced a reduced size version of this engraving in 1806 (Also printed by Fores, this version was had the plate numbered in lower left corner: No. 1 Pl. 4.) Although clearly the same image, it is a totally new, reduced version, with noticeable differences in the engraving.

George Woodward (1765-1809) was a successful caricaturist and humourist. Although he did etch some of his own plates most of his work was engraved by fellow caricaturists and in particular Thomas Rowlandson and Isaac Cruikshank. Rowlandson and Woodward were great friends, drinking companions and co-conspirators in satire.

    Silk Menu 1905

Nantes: Maison Turcaud, 1905. A pink silk menu, with an attractive stitched design to the top third, and a menu printed in brown to the bottom two thirds. The stitched design shows an art nouveau image with a woman with a headpiece surrounded by bunches of flowers.

Paris: Chez Aubert & cie, 1845. First edition. A beautifully produced, hand coloured lithograph by Cham. This came from the album "Souvenirs de Garnison," Comic views of French military life. Produced in 1845. This was produced in two forms, the more common is with black and white illustrations. The deluxe version, which is clearly much scarcer, although we can find no limitation, has hand coloured lithographs. A beautifully clean example, with excellent colouring and just a touch of darkening to the page edges. The only flaw is that the printing (or trimming) is at a slight angle to the page. (See photograph). A lovely copy. Although some prints from this album claim the year 1850 as publication, FirstSearch /…
