This report is addressed to His Excellency Mr. Rouher, Minister of Agriculture, Commerce and Public Works. The author presents an in-depth study of the vineyards of southwestern France, including recommendations for improving wine production and grape quality. It covers topics such as growing methods, types of grape varieties, climatic conditions and winemaking techniques. There are 89 engraved illustrations throughout the text. Joinville: G. Pochon, 1915. First edition. A lovely piece of world war one propaganda / fund raising. Pochon was based at the Train Sanitaire, S.P. 10 EST, Wagon no. 9, Secteur post, 20. The train had connections with the hospital at Joinville (In the Haute-Marne). A nicely produced periodical (monthly for five months), with was created to raise funds for the orphans of the army. The periodical contains numerous full-page illustrations, including caricatures, and a variety of amusing articles, some poetry and some music. It seems to be entirely the work of Pochon. Olive green cover with illustration to the front and rear. Covers plus 16 pages. The pages are loose in the cover, there is no sign that they have ever been sewn in to the cover. Overall in excellent condition. One page has a 3cm closed tear to the page edges. A touch of light foxing to the pages only. 32cm x 24.5cm. A rare title, we can find no other copies available at the time of cataloguing. A complete set of 5 is listed at WorldCat / OCLC: 1545100679. The University of Virginia seems to be the only library holding.

Une page présente une déchirure fermée de 3 cm sur les bords de la page. 32cm x 24.5cm. Un titre rare, nous n'avons pas trouvé d'autres exemplaires disponibles au moment du catalogage. Un jeu complet de 5 exemplaires est répertorié dans WorldCat / OCLC : 1545100679. L'Université de Virginie semble être la seule bibliothèque à posséder l'ouvrage.

London: Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1820. A nice copy of this uncommon first edition. Stiff card / hardback binding with cloth spine. The spine is chipped with loss to the middle part. The boards are somewhat darkened, with bumping to the edges. Internally, the book is in good condition, with a touch of darkening only, and a little marking to the first couple of pages. viii, 104 pages. The first 12 pages are the poem in Latin. The rest of the book is notes and commentary / translation of it. An unusual gastronomy book. A glossary in French, English and Latin is given at the beginning of the work. This has been repaired to the top corner of both pages (not affecting text). 250 by 200mm (9¾ by 7¾ inches).

These are sound, but somewhat darkened. Some light marking and a little nicking to the head and tail of the spine. Internally the pages are clean and neat (and complete) with a touch of darkening to the page edges. The sewn binding is very loose - just holding the book together, particularly to the first gather. Would benefit from restoration. All 25 plates are present and in good condition. Each plate has a page of explanation preceding it. 37cm x 28cm.

Berlin: Carl Rentsch, 1934. First edition. The second of Hanfstaengl's collections of caricatures of Hitler from the world's press. He writes in the introduction that this shows the caricatures from his entry into political history until the present day (1934). He states that this is to "prove his importance and to refute his opponents" The work was written with the permission and approval of the Fuhrer. Original hardback cloth. This is a little foxed, but still very presentable. The text block is clean and tidy throughout, with a slight darkening to the page edges. Of interest in this copy, is that it is covered in the Classified Adverts section of a 1945 German newspaper. The owner was clearly wanting to disguise this pre Nazi book after the war. Adverts include an American oil company seeking bomb disposal experts to work in Tripoli. A nice piece of ephemeral history. 176 pages. 255 by 190mm (10 by 7½ inches).

L'intérêt de cet exemplaire est qu'il est couvert par la section des petites annonces d'un journal allemand de 1945. Le propriétaire souhaitait manifestement dissimuler ce livre pré-nazi après la guerre. Les annonces concernent notamment une compagnie pétrolière américaine à la recherche d'experts en déminage pour travailler à Tripoli. Un beau morceau d'histoire éphémère. 176 pages. 255 x 190 mm

Cologne: Chez le Politique, 1695. Nice copy of this first edition forgery. Almost everything on the title page is false. The real author is the soldier turned author Coutilz de Sandras (1644-1712). The publication date of 1695 is accurate. The work is essentially fiction, written in a stately language and woven into a historical background. Full leather binding with small leather label and gilt title. A little rubbing and marking, but overall in very good condition. marking to the end papers from old tape. Frontis showing the grovelling marquis presenting his memoirs to the king. The rear Louvois died before this work was written. [x], 576. pages. Final blank end paper has been removed. Usually ascribed to Gatien de Courtilz. cf. B.M. London: The Author by T. Spilsbury, 1794. A decent copy of this First edition. Old (probably not contemporary) full leather boards, with gilt titles. This copy contains a folding plan of the Abbey, and a folding view of the East Prospect of the Abbey (both clean and tidy). There is also a folding map of the Liberty of Furness. This is somewhat creased and has a few small closed tears to it, and a couple of foxing spots. No loss though. Although anonymous, the dedication is signed Thomas West. The leather is somewhat rubbed, with a little loss to the head and tail of the spine - not much though. Internally mainly clean and tidy, with a touch of foxing and a few spots only. Bound in 3/4 deluxe leather with gilt decoration to the spine and marbled boards. This edition is limited to 750 copies. (This being #608), shown in a hand written colophon to each volume. All nine volumes are in excellent, clean and neat condition. The spines and boards are in very good condition. One some volumes, there is a fading / lightening to the volume on the open edge (unusually, generally it is the spine that fades). Volume eight has some marking to the front board (see photographs). Marbled end papers. Internally printed high quality heavy bond chain paper. Beautifully clean throughout. Just a touch of light intermittent foxing. John Greenleaf Whittier (1807–1892) was an American Quaker poet, abolitionist, and major figure among the so-called fireside poets of the 19th century. Whittier played a central role in the American anti-slavery movement, advocating for abolition both through poetry and direct action — including service as a delegate to anti-slavery conventions and a term in the Massachusetts legislature. He published important anti-slavery tracts such as Justice and Expediency and was known for his involvement in abolitionist publications like the Pennsylvania Freeman.

John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) était un poète quaker américain, un abolitionniste et une figure majeure des "poètes du coin du feu" du XIXe siècle. Whittier a joué un rôle central dans le mouvement antiesclavagiste américain, défendant l'abolition à la fois par la poésie et par l'action directe, notamment en tant que délégué aux conventions antiesclavagistes et en siégeant à la législature du Massachusetts.
