London: R. Ackermann's Repository, 1808. Plate number 9 from Ackermann's "Microcosm of London". A lovely aquatint. First edition. Plate is 24cm x 29 cm. Mount size is 32.5cm by 38cm (12¾ by 15 inches). The architectural details were drawn by Pugin, and Rowlandson drew the figures (both are credited on the sheet). The aquatinting was done by J. Bluck. Very nice clean impression of this plate, with good colouring. A very small closed foxing spot to the bottom edge of the plate. Ackermann produced this work between 1807 and 1810. One of the greatest of the colour plate books. "The plates by Rowlandson and Pugin present an unrivaled picture of London in early 19th century, of historic value, as many of the buildings no longer exist." (Tooley)

Signed dedication from Sell on the half-title page to Bill Fine (former president and general manager of WCVB-TV Channel 5 in the USA): Dear Bill Fine - never underestimate the Cody-Billings bloodlines - Henry Blackman Sell, Cody, Wyoming 1965. Linen boards in yellow illustrated dust jacket; Illustrated throughout. 278 pages. 260 x 200 mm (10¼ x 7¾ inches). The book has some discoloration, and the dust jacket is sun faded, with number of shallow chips to the edges. The contents are in a good clean condition, but the first few pages has evidence of a paperclip having been attached at some point. Sell was an ancestor of "Buffalo Bill", real name William Frederick Cody (1846 – 1917), a frontiersman who has been portrayed in many ways over the years.

Bill Fine (until 2020) worked for WCVB Channel 5, Hearst Television's flagship station, and in 1965 Sell was editor for Hearst's Harper's Bazaar, so they would have been colleagues.

London: George Bell and Sons, 1900. An interesting copy of this reprint edition. There are 31 steel plates (and 12 in page woodcuts) in the book. Of these the 30 steels that contain birds are all expertly hand-coloured. This was not part of the publication, so has presumably been done by an owner. This adds significantly to the attraction of the book. Contemporary green buckram boards with gilt titles. This is part of the Bohn's Libraries series, and has the Bohn's name and stamp to the spine in gilt. There is a little marking and bumping to the boards. The front end paper has been removed from this copy. The binding is a little loose, and slightly shaken, but still holding together well. There is some foxing / darkening throughout the book. xvi, 500, 32. pp. Advertising catalogue for Bohn's libraries to rear. 180 x 125 mm (7 x 5 inches).

London: Marcus Ward & Co, 1877. First Edition. Small calendar booklet with a delicately sewn binding. (The thread appears to be recent). Comprises four colour and gilt full-page illustrations, depicting the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Many of these calendars were attributed to the illustrator Kate Greenaway, but we are not sure these illustrations are hers. Nonetheless, they are beautiful! On verso of each is information for that coming year. Includes the moon's phases, legal holidays, church days, eclipses, and information about foreign and domestic postage rates. Bottom left of each illustration is the publisher's name: Marcus Ward & Co. Bottom right of each it reads: Ent. Sta. Hall - abbreviated version of Entered at Stationers' Hall. Booklet is in fine condition. 100 x 70 mm (4 x 2¾ inches).

Additions after 1630 are marked with the date of accession; towns underlined were seats of parlements (sic). Both book and dust jacket are in very good condition. Very small previous owner's name to top of front pastedown. Geoffrey Treasure was a popular history teacher and housemaster at Harrow School. He was the author of several books, mainly about France in the 16th and 17th centuries. 316 pages, including bibliography and index. 225 x 145 mm (8¾ x 5¾ inches).

Saumur: E. Roland. First Edition. An attractive programme for the 1908 Carrousel. The front and rear covers show designs by Grasser, The programme inside, show the name, rank etc of each cavalry officer taking part, and what they are doing during the Carrousel. 4 pages. 320 by 250mm (12½ by 9¾ inches). The covers are a little darkened and marked. small pinhole to one edge. Repaired split to the bottom 3-4 cm of the spine. Internally clean but slightly darkened. A nice piece of ephemeral military / equine history. The Cavalry school at Saumur was established in 1763 to train riders in the military. Legend has it that the Bishop of made the school move to Saumur to bring pain to the Protestant town (after the officers had been too friendly with the local ladies). The regular Carousel is one of the highlights of French Horse riding. The school still exists today, training officers of the tank regiments, and supporting the nearby Cadre Noir, France's elite horse riders.

Les couvertures sont un peu assombries et marquées. Petit trou d'épingle sur un bord. Fente réparée sur les 3-4 cm inférieurs du dos. L'intérieur est propre mais légèrement assombri. Une belle pièce d'histoire militaire / équine éphémère. L'école de cavalerie de Saumur a été créée en 1763 pour former les cavaliers à l'armée. La légende veut que l'évêque de Saumur ait fait déménager l'école à Saumur pour faire souffrir la ville protestante (après que les officiers aient été trop amicaux avec les dames locales). Le carrousel régulier est l'un des points forts de l'équitation française. L'école existe toujours aujourd'hui, formant les officiers des régiments de chars et soutenant le Cadre Noir, l'élite des cavaliers français.

The Ruggieri brothers were French pyrotechnic experts of the Eighteenth Century. The family assembled a collection of over 1500 books on the subject of festivals or fétes. Important as there is no standard bibliography of the subject. Here is the bibliography of this collection. Although a facsimile, this has additional author and title indexes making it more usable. Red cloth and black leather spine with gilt titles. In as new condition inside and out. xi, [i], 1-413 pages.Text in French throughout. 220 by 150mm (8¾ by 6 inches).

Voici la bibliographie de cette collection. Bien qu'il s'agisse d'un fac-similé, celui-ci comporte des index supplémentaires des auteurs et des titres, ce qui le rend plus utilisable. A paper label shows that this copy was for Monsieur Pavet, and that he was to received a volume bound in half red leather and with papier Agathe (which this copy is). The majority of the catalogues were softback, so Monsieur Pavet must have been a valued customer.
American citizen, the owner of this collection, Mr. Benzon, ran the house of Naylor, Benzon & Cie in London. He died two years before his library went on sale. Many of the books he purchased were from the Henry Bordes collection, who wrote catalogue entries for much of this sale (signified by his initials after the entry). The sale comprised 400 items, and against each, is the price achieved (in pencil)
Red half calf with gilt titles. Brown marbled boards. A little rubbing and dulling to the spine and edges, with a touch of loss to the corners of the boards. Internally in very good condition, with a little darkening and a few scattered marks only. viii, 104. pp. 245 x 170 mm. La plupart des livres qu'il a achetés provenaient de la collection Henry Bordes, qui a rédigé des entrées de catalogue pour une grande partie de cette vente (signifiées par ses initiales après l'entrée). Demi-veau rouge avec titres dorés. Plats marbrés marron. Un peu de frottements et d'émoussements au dos et sur les tranches, avec une touche de manque aux coins des plats. Intérieur en très bon état, avec un peu de noircissement et quelques marques éparses seulement. viii, 104. p. 245 x 170 mm.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1806. First edition. Half brown leather with black labels to the spine. Marbled boards. Title, advert & preface. The work is in four parts. (1) Containing a view of civil government in its influence on virtue and happiness, chiefly from the relation it bears to liberty and property. (2) On the importance of Religion, both to society and the individual, with reflections on Religious establishments and toleration. (3) On the Conduct of the good citizen, particularly under any moderate government. (4) On the way to live happily under all governments, and in all situations. The boards and spine are clean, but there is a little rubbing to the spine, with a closed tear to the top edge of the spine. Inside, the book is clean and tidy throughout. The text block is bright and there is minimal darkening. Overall a nice copy. xvi, 445 (1) pp.,
