    London: Hutchinson & Co, 1891. Enlarged and Revised Edition. Number 178 of 300 copies Edition De Luxe, on India paper, signed to colophon by publisher. In original brown cloth hardback, with gilt titles and border. Top edge gilt. Boards are a little bumped at corners, with some light soiling. Inside very clean with all tipped in illustrations. 260 pages plus adverts to rear. 250 x 200 mm (9¾ x 7¾ inches).

    Ex libris to front is from library of Sir Alfred Edward Turner (1842 - 1918). Turner held administrative posts in Ireland, and was Inspector General Auxillary Forces. He was also appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB).

    London: Printed for C. Cooke, 1798. First Thus. Hardback in three quarter calf and marbled boards. Title in gilt on red morocco labels to spine, decorated in gilt. Each of the three volumes has two additional title pages, one engraved and one letterpress. Without date of publication, but plates are dated 1798. Embellished with superb engravings, including decorative headpieces and tailpieces. The boards are lightly rubbed at the corners, internally also in very good condition. 145 x 95 mm (5¾ x 3¾ inches).

This was issued without dust wrapper in a red hardback with tipped in photograph & gilt titles. In addition to the author's signature, this special edition includes additional material: An interview with Andrea Levy; Material on the Empire Windrush; Reading Group discussion questions; and a short story. The red paper covered boards have a touch of rubbing to the corners, but are in very good condition. Internally, the book is in excellent condition. Frontis illustration of Chichele (by M Burghers). A small ink annotation to the ffep shows that the book was purchased for 2 S. 6 d. in 1699 (12.5 pence). 8vo. First edition. Although shown by Duck as almost a Saint, and presented as a Protestant before the Reformation, for his arguments with Pope Martin, a modern view would look at Chichele as a lawyer and diplomat who protected his various prebends and livings at every chance, and who, whilst working to prevent schizm in the Church and Papacy, was nonetheless…

The work is dedicated to Archbishop Thomas - this was Thomas Tenison, Archbishop of Canterbury at the time of writing. The binding is in a good clean condition. A little rubbing to the binding edges. still holding well. Internally, generally clean and tidy, with a touch of darkening to the end papers. slight water damage to the edge of the last two leaves (not affecting text). Henry Chichele (1364-1443) from Northamptonshire became Archbishop of Canterbury and founded All Souls College, Oxford. Arthur Duck, was a Fellow of All Souls.
