London: T. Carnan, 1781. A lovely copy of this set of three books, bound as one. Original leather boards, with a newer leather spine and black and burgundy labels with gilt titles. Binding is in good, clean condition. Lovely clean folding map of the roads of England and Wales as a frontis. The first volume is a 1785 fifth edition. The first part is an index of crossroads, followed by a list of main roads. The second volume is a travelling dictionary, or alphabetical tables, showing the distances between significant towns. This is also 1781, and is the fourth edition of this volume. The third volume (1781, fifth edition) is principal cross roads of Scotland. A beautifully clean example. Essential for those sunspot days when your satnav doesn't work. xxiv, 265., iv, 180., ii, [16] (pagination is 32 but this is the number of columns, two per page) pages. 18.5cm x 11cm.

Edinburgh: D Webster & D Schaw, 1817. First Edition. Contemporary half leather binding with gilt decoration and titles to the spine. The boards are significantly rubbed, and the gilt to the spine dulled, but still attractive and original. The "Elegant sheet map" of Scotland is present, but a quarter of it (North East) is missing, and there are a couple of closed tears to the rest of the sheet. The book itself is complete and in sound shape, but has moderate foxing / darkening throughout. XXviii, 676 pages + map. includes Errata. 210 by 130mm (8¼ by 5 inches). London: 1722. A very nice copy, with contemporary hand colouring, under passe partout. This is probably from the second (1722) edition of Camden's Britannia. 43cm x 39cm. Good, clean copy, with minimal darkening. Centre fold has been reinforced to the rear. Nice bright colouring. Tipped onto passe partout with archival tape. Frame is 49cm x 39cm. Very good condition. Shows Britain as named under Roman occupation.

The earlier works of Daniell, and his brother Thomas, are credited with giving the English public their first accurate look at the exotic sub-continent of India; beginning a fascination with Indian architecture, landscaping and interiors, with the Royal Pavilion at Brighton at its centre.

Both vols possibly lack a divisional title (of the second part), but texts are complete. A few minor imperfections (foot of spine of vol. I slightly damaged / chipped, bindings slightly rubbed/ worn along extremities, 1 fold. map. slightly torn in outer blank margin, a little foxed/ browned), but nevertheless an attractively bound set in good condition. Janvier's 1783 decorative map of the British Isles. Includes all of England, Scotland and Ireland as well as parts of adjacent France, Holland and Belgium. Divided according to provinces. An inset in the upper right details the Shetland and Orkney Islands. A decorative distance scale appears in the lower left quadrant. A similarly decorative title cartouche depicting the British royal armorial crest is set in the upper left quadrant. Drawn by J. Janvier for issue as plate no. 20 in Jean Lattre's 1783 final issue of the Atlas Moderne. Dimensions: 31.0 x 44.8 cm. Reasonable condition. Paper slightly dirty, with several ink stains. Centrefold as published. With small tear in centrefold in bottom margin. Verso: blank, largely blackened with charcoal. Jean or Robert Janvier (fl. 1746 - 1776) was a Paris based cartographer active in the mid to late 18th century. Janvier true first name is a matter of debate, as it appears as it often appears as either Jean or Robert. More commonly, Janvier simply signed his maps Signor Janvier. By the late 18th century Janvier seems to have been awarded the title of "Geographe Avec Privilege du Roi" and this designations appears on many of his latter maps. Janvier worked with many of the most prominent French, English and Italian map publishers of his day, including Faden, Lattre, Bonne, Santini, Zannoni, Delamarche, and Desnos. A decent copy, 160 by 110mm (6¼ by 4¼ inches). The frontis colour map (which is of the whole of England and Wales) has a closed tear to one edge, otherwise very good. The rest of the book is in good, slightly darkened condition. Deuxième édition. Couverture rigide rouge avec titres dorés. Légères marques et léger pli sur le plat avant, mais en bon état. Exemplaire correct, 160 x 110 mm (6¼ x 4¼ pouces). La carte en couleurs en frontispice (qui représente l'ensemble de l'Angleterre et du Pays de Galles) présente une déchirure fermée sur un bord, mais est sinon en très bon état. Le reste du livre est en bon état, légèrement noirci.

London: Thomas Bowles, 1720. Copper engraving by Emanuel Bowen published in the pocket road book 'Britannia Depicta' by Thomas Bowles from 1720. This was the first truly pocket sized road book for the traveller based on the surveys of John Ogilby published in large folio format 45 years earlier in 1675.
The plates were printed on both sides of the paper, reducing the weight of the volume which required considerable organisation for the process of copperplate printing as the ink required an extensive drying-off period. The notes by John Owen were engraved by Emanuel Bowen on the copperplate surrounding the road maps and also on separate plates. The maps have become commonly known as "Owen & Bowen" maps. The map is set below a decorative cartouche containing the title for the road from London to Bristol with the final part of the road from London to Berwick verso.
190 x 120 mm (7½ x 4¾ inches).

London: NA. A nice photograph album, from Circa 1918. Half faux leather with card boards and cord ties. This contains 22 tourist photographs of London. All are size 6.5cm x 8.5cm. Nice sepia tone with white numbers. These seem to be mainly (or possibly all) by Valentine. There are handwritten captions alongside many of the photographs of the major London landmarks. The dating is from the style and vehicles shown. There are then a number of blank pages. To the rear of the album are 4 larger (10cm x 14cm photographs with 3 exteriors and one interior of British country houses. These would appear to be slightly later photographs - perhaps 1930's. A total of 26 photographs. Provenance: From a Brussels antique market, Small photograph (from Brussels studio) with a photograph of an aircraft, circa 1950's. A nice collection. Album dimensions 175 by 205mm (7 by 8 inches).

Celles-ci semblent être des photographies légèrement ultérieures - peut-être des années 1930. Un total de 26 photographies. London: N.P, C1990. An attractive print of a water colour landscape by McKivragen, showing St Paul's Cathedral from the Thames, with a skiff in the foreground. A very high quality print, signed in the plate, and with the title beneath. The print is done onto embossed art card, which gives an attractive border. The paper is held under passepartout card with a yellow bevelled edge. The passe partout is very slightly darkened with a couple of very light marks. Held under glass in a contemporary gilt faux antique frame. A very attractive work. Paper area 21cm x 15.5cm. Frame is 40cm x 34cm. Terry McKivragan (1929-2013) was a British artist born in Cheshire in 1929. He studied at Wimbledon Art School, and pursued a career in commercial art before becoming a full time watercolour artist in 1986. He specialised in landscapes and sporting scenes. Une jolie reproduction d'une aquarelle de McKivragen représentant la cathédrale Saint-Paul vue depuis la Tamise, avec une barque au premier plan. Une reproduction de très haute qualité, signée dans la plaque, avec le titre en dessous. L'impression est réalisée sur une carte artistique gaufrée, ce qui lui confère une bordure attrayante. Terry McKivragan (1929-2013) était un artiste britannique né dans le Cheshire en 1929. London: The Author by T. Spilsbury, 1794. A decent copy of this First edition. Old (probably not contemporary) full leather boards, with gilt titles. This copy contains a folding plan of the Abbey, and a folding view of the East Prospect of the Abbey (both clean and tidy). There is also a folding map of the Liberty of Furness. This is somewhat creased and has a few small closed tears to it, and a couple of foxing spots. No loss though. Although anonymous, the dedication is signed Thomas West. The leather is somewhat rubbed, with a little loss to the head and tail of the spine - not much though. Internally mainly clean and tidy, with a touch of foxing and a few spots only. Owner's bookplate for John Abraham of of Liverpool. Two folding plates and a folding map. ESTC: T144672. [20],lvi,[2],288,[136] pp.

London: George Godwin. First edition thus. An attractive guide to the Norfolk Broads. This is the 1964 edition. We cannot find records of an earlier edition, and WorldCat only records a 1968 edition. Orange softback with spiral binding. In good, clean condition, without significant marks. The binding is in unusually good condition for this style of binding. Inside are 130 pages of adverts, maps, charts, black and white photographs and guides to the Norfolk Broads. To the rear is a movable "Tide computer" with instructions. A nice introduction to the Broads. 18.5cm x 24.5cm.

LONDON: Thomas Basset and Richard Chiswell. Attractive full colour example of Speed's map of Lincoln, from an early (1676) edition of Speed's Theatre of Great Britain. Includes multiple coats of arms and a large inset plan of the town of Lincoln. The hand colouring is attractive and bright, but there are marks and stains to the edges of the map, and a little darkening. There are old pin holes to the corners where one pinned to the wall! To the rear are pages 63 and 64 with the description of Lincolnshire and list of the Hundreds in the county. The decoration of the text title identifies the edition as that of 1676. Centre fold. There are a few tape remnants to the verso and some small repairs with archival tape. 42cm x 54cm. British historian John Speed is perhaps the most famous English mapmaker of the seventeenth century. His reputation rests on two great books: The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, produced initially in 1611-1612 and A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World, published in 1627, the first general atlas of the world to be created in England.

Il y a de vieux trous d'épingle dans les coins où l'on a épinglé la carte au mur ! Au verso, les pages 63 et 64 contiennent la description du Lincolnshire et la liste des centaines du comté.
