Second edition, identified by being "Maison Mame" rather than Alfred Mame et fils. Otherwise a faithful reproduction of the first edition. The boards are mainly clean, but have had some additional lines added by an owner at some point (not too damaging - see pics), and some rubbing to the edges. Internally in mainly good, clean and tidy condition, with nice lithographic illustration. The binding is slightly loose, but still holding together. 300 by 245mm (11¾ by 9¾ inches).

France: na, 1910. An attractive bundle of 7 pages, with 17 sketches / vignettes in ink on them. Caricature sketches, showing: (1) Two elderly gentlemen conversing; (2) Two gentlemen in circa 1910 dress; (3) two sketches showing horse riders and a small Chinese caricature; (4) A collection of soldiers, a gentleman frog, and a frog talking to a duck; (5) An anthropomorphic bakery and knights entering a forest; 6) a sailor ?; (7) Three Beatrix Potter style rabbit sketches. All of the caricatures are on pages removed from a sketch book. These are somewhat darkened. There is a little edgewear and nicking to the sheets. Sheet are various sizes, but mostly 200 by 120mm (7¾ by 4¾ inches).

This is somewhat soiled and darkened, but still attractive. Wood-engraved title vignette and 8 charming lithographed figures in colour in 4 plates outside the text. (The plates seem to have hand coloured elements). Not in Vicaire. Missing from Embs & Mellot, Livre d'enfants et de jeunesse and Gumuchian. This Belgian edition is missing from the Bn. Good copy. Reinforcement with archival tape to the front hinge. Owner's annotation to the front end paper. Pages are somewhat darkened with a little foxing, plates have foxing to them. A scarce item. We can find only one other copy available. 154 [ii] pages. 14cm x 20cm. We cannot find this edition in WorldCat / OCLC.

Soft covers. 6 pages of text and 6 full page colour lithograph illustrations (these printed to one side only). Printed by Edmund Evans. A nice copy. Now covered in glassine wrapper, the covers are clean and tidy. Duo-tone titles and illustration in lovely early Noveau style to the front cover. A list of Routledge's New Series of Shilling Toy Books to the rear cover (this was book 77). Inside, the book is in clean, restored condition. There as some closed tears, and several pages with loss to the edge of the page. These have been repaired with archival tape. Binding also reinforced with archival tape. Although imperfect, it is a sound, clean copy with very attractive plates. No foxing. 270 by 235mm (10¾ by 9¼ inches).

Two-tone and coloured stencil illustrations by Maurice Tranchant. The hardback, paper covered boards are in good, clean condition, with a little darkening overall. To the front board, a paper label has been pasted down over the Duchartre title (barely noticeable). Attractive illustrated end papers showing a map of Algeria. The end papers have been restored at some point, and reinforced in place. A neat job. The text block is in good clean condition throughout, with lovely illustrations. No significant damage, but a little darkening to the page edges. 32 pages. 38cm x 27.5cm.

Les gardes ont été restaurées à un moment donné et renforcées. Un travail soigné. Le bloc de texte est en bon état de propreté, avec de belles illustrations. Attractive and very colourful anthropomorphic illustrations for each letter of the alphabet (and numbers 1-9 in Roman and Western forms). Soft covers with black binding strip. Illustration of duck and elephant to the front cover, and animals reading to the rear. The covers are a little darkened but without chips or tears. Inside in a clean but slightly darkened condition throughout. 30 pages. 320 x 240 mm (12½ x 9½ inches).

New York: 1850. First edition. Undated with the John McLoughlin imprint (see below) and 24 Beekman Street address. A reasonable copy. Crudely sewn binding with paper covers (not unusual for these early McLoughlins, we have seen several examples similarly stitched). Pale yellow covers with moderate marking and darkening to them. The edges of the covers have some small closed tears. The rear cover has a long closed tear acros the back (but quite neat!). Inside, there are 10 pages of hand coloured woodcut images. (complete). (Only the red initial is coloured to each piece). These pages are in good condition, with just a little darkening. The hand colouring is crudely done. 19.5cm x 11.5cm. Mostly conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 18185039. We can find no other current copies available. John McLoughlin was a Scottish-born coach maker who became a prominent figure in the New York publishing industry during the 19th century. He began in 1819 after moving to New York and initially worked for the Sterling Iron Company, where he developed an interest in printing. By 1828, he had established his own printing business on Tryon Row in Manhattan, focusing on publishing semi-religious tracts for children under the title McLoughlin's Books for Children. In 1840, McLoughlin partnered with wood engraver Robert H. Elton to form Elton & Co., which specialised in toy books, comic almanacs, and valentines. His son, John McLoughlin Jr., eventually took over in 1850 when both senior partners retired. The firm of McLoughlin Brothers is listed at 24 Beekman St. in the New York directories for 1858 to 1862, McLoughlin Bros. was located at 30 Beekman St., New York, between 1863 and April, 1870. Under John Jr.'s leadership, the company became known as McLoughlin Brothers and pioneered the use of colour printing technologies, including chromolithography, for children's books. This innovation made their publications visually striking and widely popular. The McLoughlin Brothers expanded their offerings to include games, puzzles, paper dolls, and other children's products. By 1870, they had opened the largest colour printing factory in the United States. Their works often featured adaptations of British stories by illustrators such as Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway. The company thrived until it was sold to Milton Bradley in 1920. Despite this transition, the McLoughlin imprint continued to produce children's books into the early 20th century.

Reinforced subtly to the spine and with new stitching. End papers and ten leaves, comprising six pages of text and five full colour chromolithographic illustrations on six pages (one double page) printed to one side only. Illustrated end papers. Covers are clean and tidy. Internally clean, but fractionally darkened. The first plate has been neatly repaired to the bottom edge (not affecting illustration). A couple of other neat repairs including an area of the final plate. Overall thought still a very nice copy. 27cm x 23.5cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 13531122.
