Esslingen am Neckar: J.F. Schreiber, 1840. Differing editions. Two volumes (of five) of these hand coloured sheets for children. Each is complete in itself. We offer the first part, published in 1840, and the third part, in 1844. Despite the title on the first part (which claims that it is concerned with poisonous plants), this second edition printing is concerned with objects around the house, buildings, animals, and particularly a large number of birds. Six pages of contents (in gothic script German) outline in detail what is shown on each plate. The second part is showing "foreign natural objects arranged by geographical location". There is a foreword by Schmid, then an alphabetical index. There are then descriptions in detail of the sheets in German (pages 1-18). Following this are descriptions in French (pages 1-9). Then the plates. These are split into the North (ie polar) Plates 1-4; Asia. Plates 5-12; Africa, plates 13-21; America (north and south) plates 22-28; and finally Oceania, plates 29-30. This scarce children's collection of prints, each contains 30 double page sheets, with hand coloured illustrations of different subjects. So here we are offering 60 double plate sheets. The binding is in old paper covered stiff card, with bumping and loss of surface paper. The spine has been renewed quite some time ago with archival cloth. No titles. The contents for the first few pages are breaking away from the binding - but still holding together. The plates themselves, although bright and attractive, have loss to edges and closed tears to quite a few of the pages. Most of the loss is to the margins (but one sheet has lost a portion of illustration. The sheets improve as the book goes on, so towards the rear, they are mainly in good plus condition. There are some lovely designs and illustrations throughout, particularly to the second volume here. Of particular note, is that several of the America plates are showing slaves working in the plantations. The part of the natural history of the world is full of lovely regional illustrations. Overall, an acceptable copy of a very scarce item. (we can find no copies for sale at the time of cataloguing). 32cm x 22cm.

Celles-ci sont réparties entre le Nord (c'est-à-dire les plaques polaires), les plaques 1 à 4 ; l'Asie. Plaques 5-12 ; Afrique, plaques 13-21 ; Amérique (nord et sud) plaques 22-28 ; et enfin Océanie, plaques 29-30. Cette rare collection d'estampes pour enfants contient chacune 30 doubles pages, avec des illustrations colorées à la main sur différents sujets. Nous proposons donc ici 60 doubles pages. La reliure est en carton rigide recouvert de papier ancien, avec des bosses et des pertes de papier en surface. Le dos a été renouvelé il y a quelques temps avec du tissu d'archivage. Pas de titres. Le contenu des premières pages se détache de la reliure, mais tient encore ensemble. Les planches elles-mêmes, bien que brillantes et attrayantes, présentent des pertes sur les bords et des déchirures fermées sur un certain nombre de pages. La plupart des pertes se situent dans les marges (mais une feuille a perdu une partie de l'illustration). L'état des feuilles s'améliore au fur et à mesure que le livre avance, de sorte que vers la fin, elles sont pour la plupart en bon état. Il y a de jolis dessins et illustrations tout au long de l'ouvrage, en particulier dans le deuxième volume. Il est intéressant de noter que plusieurs des planches d'Amérique montrent des esclaves travaillant dans les plantations. La partie consacrée à l'histoire naturelle du monde est remplie de belles illustrations régionales. Dans l'ensemble, un exemplaire acceptable d'un ouvrage très rare. Red linen spine with lithographed front cover. In very good condition, with a touch of marking and rubbing only. Slight bumping to the corners. Small area to the front cover with an old tape repair (not particularly noticeable). Inside, the thirty plates are in very good condition. Slightly darkened to the edges only. The plates are held in the binding by hinges, and a few of the plates have been re-set / reinforced in position. Overall an excellent example. 320 by 210mm (12½ by 8¼ inches). These are somewhat faded and with a little rubbing, but still in sound condition. The lovely frontis shows "Le sapeur de dix ans" (one of the four stories in the work). Internally clean and tidy, with a little darkening to the pages only. 18cm x 11.5cm. 88 pages. A rare work. There are no other copies for sale at the time of cataloguing. Originally by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, that was first published in 1816. The story is the tale of a special Christmas toy who comes to life at night! Covers are age toned, and are detached (as one piece) from the text block. All pages also aged, and some transference of colour to subsequent page from the illustrations. Portrait of the singer at the top of the cover, in black and white. Very good, clean condition. No significant flaws. Attractive illustrations very much in the style of the 1960's. Salvatore Adamo is a Belgian-Italian singer known for romantic ballads. The book must be read one way for one story, then turned upside down and read the other way for the second story. Decorated red boards. Page edges and endpapers are red. Wonderful colour illustrations. 64 pages. 190 x 140 mm (7½ x 5½ inches). Illustrated by John R. Neill, Known for His Illustrations of L. Frank Baum's OZ Books. No dust jacket. The boards are a little rubbed, particularly to spine head and tail. Overall a very good example of the earliest edition. The illustrations were first serialised by the Philadelphia North American Syndicate in Sunday supplements as "Children's Stories That Never Grow Old," September 1, 1907 to March 22, 1908. Reilly & Britton then issued them as single volumes, and in a collection Children's Stories That Never Grow Old (1908). 34, 34 pages. 190 x 140 mm (7½ x 5½ inches).

London: Grant and Griffith. Successors to John Harris, 1845. A nice copy of this children's book, illustrated with 13 attractive hand coloured illustrations. An American moral tale, dating to around 1806, this was a new edition, undated but 1845. Yellow stiff card boards. The boards are clean, but the spine has deteriorated and repaired with archival tape. Rear panel shows other works by Grant and Griffith. Other than spine damage, the book is clean and tidy throughout. This English edition is quite scarce. 48 pages. 17.5cm x 11cm.

Munchen: Braun & Schneider, 1908. First edition. A scarce German children's book, exhibiting the racist opinions of the time. Original mustard hardback with vignette illustration and text to the front board. Paper on the boards are pasted over a mustard cloth. There is a red stain to about half of the front cover, and bubbling from old damp to the rear board. Still presentable though. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with just a touch of marking / darkening to the pages. 40 pages. Coloured illustrations throughout. We are selling this as a genuine historical item, and not as an endorsement of the views or language within. 33cm x 25cm.

Wien: M. Trentsensky. First Edition, Circa 1860. A lovely set of six lithographs from the series Das Alpenleben. Published by Trentsensky and printed by E. Sieger, the full set comprised of 12 lithographs, each with a number of vignettes of alpine life upon them. We offer numbers 1-6 (So half a set). Our sheets are beautifully hand coloured. The base area of each is painted grey, suggesting that these were intended as cut out sheets (or "mandl sheets" ) for children to play with. The plates are in good, clean condition, on thin paper. This is somewhat toned with age. There is minimal edgewear, but a few very minor closed tears to the edges. Each sheet is  235 by 370mm (9¼ by 14½ inches).

Berlin: Olga Diakow & Co, 1923. A nice German edition of these three tales from Pushkin. First edition thus. German translation (From the Russian) by Ervin Walter. Stiff card boards. These have slight to moderate rubbing, but are still attractive. Cloth spine with a touch of fraying. Inside, the pages are slightly darkened to the edges, but sound. A scarce female publisher from this period. 69 pages. 32.5cm x 24.5cm.

Georg Schlicht (1886–1964) was a versatile German-Russian painter, graphic artist, and theater designer. His artistic style ranged from colorful Impressionism to the cool precision of New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), encompassing landscapes, portraits, figures, still lifes, Hamburg harbor scenes, Russian motifs like the Troika, and later religious themes including an Apocalypse series. Born in Vladykino near Saratov, Russia, to a German engineer father and Russian mother, Schlicht studied at the Bogoljubow Art School and Moscow's Institute for Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. Interned during World War I due to his German heritage, he was expelled to Germany in 1918 after the October Revolution, settling in places like Berlin, Eisenach, and Hamburg. He worked as a theater designer, restored frescoes, and exhibited with artists like Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt, and Lovis Corinth. His Berlin studio was destroyed in 1943 bombings, but he continued painting postwar themes of nostalgia for Russia.

München: Verlag der Jugendblätter (Carl Schnell), 1910. A lovely copy of this first edition - scarce in its original protective slipcase. Book is in beautiful original condition. Clean blue cloth with a picture of a small boy driving a carriage tipped onto the front board and gilt titles and decoration around and to the spine. No significant marking or bumping to the boards - in excellent condition. Inside in excellent, clean and unmarked condition. The card slipcase is a little darkened / foxed with age. Publication details are on a paper label pasted to the slipcase. Although this has a little bumping / edgewear - it has done its part and kept the book in near perfect condition. Beautiful children's poems, 6 full-colour images, plus cover image in four-color print by Hermann Kaulbach and many black and white drawings in the text or as full page images by Kaulbach. Hermann von Kaulbach (1846–1909) was a German painter of the Munich School. He became best known for his portraits of children. 64 pages. 300 by 230mm (11¾ by 9 inches).

Germany: NA, 1982. An original manuscript. Text in German. Half pink silk Hardback with black leaves. Home made label to the front board. In addition to the blank end paper and illustrated title page, there are 8 further leaves, inked to one side only. The foreword explains how this is a tale picked up from Elves dancing in the round in the forest. There are then six leaves which contain verses in manuscript, and a silhouette drawing to each leaf. Finally, there is a naive end paper with the moon and sheep. The boards are in sound but slightly rubbed and bumped condition. Internally, the pages are in good, clean condition with no significant marks. An attractive piece of home production. First Edition. 23cm x 31cm

. Original Manuskript. Text in deutscher Sprache. Rosafarbener Seidenhalbbinder mit schwarzen Blättern. Auf der ersten Tafel ist ein Hausschild angebracht. Neben dem weißen Vorsatzblatt und dem illustrierten Titelblatt gibt es 8 zusätzliche Blätter, die nur auf einer Seite eingefärbt sind. Im Vorwort wird erklärt, dass es sich um ein Märchen handelt, das von Elfen gesammelt wurde, die im Wald im Kreis tanzten. Sechs Blätter enthalten handgeschriebene Verse, und jedes Blatt ist mit einer Silhouettenzeichnung verziert. Schließlich stellt ein naives Feinpapier den Mond und die Schafe dar. Die Blätter sind in gutem Zustand, aber leicht berieben und bestoßen. Im Inneren sind die Seiten in gutem Zustand, sauber und ohne signifikante Markierungen. Es handelt sich um eine attraktive Inlandsproduktion. Erste Ausgabe. 23cm x 31cm
