München: Verlag der Jugendblätter (Carl Schnell), 1910. A lovely copy of this first edition - scarce in its original protective slipcase. Book is in beautiful original condition. Clean blue cloth with a picture of a small boy driving a carriage tipped onto the front board and gilt titles and decoration around and to the spine. No significant marking or bumping to the boards - in excellent condition. Inside in excellent, clean and unmarked condition. The card slipcase is a little darkened / foxed with age. Publication details are on a paper label pasted to the slipcase. Although this has a little bumping / edgewear - it has done its part and kept the book in near perfect condition. Beautiful children's poems, 6 full-colour images, plus cover image in four-color print by Hermann Kaulbach and many black and white drawings in the text or as full page images by Kaulbach. Hermann von Kaulbach (1846–1909) was a German painter of the Munich School. He became best known for his portraits of children. 64 pages. 300 by 230mm (11¾ by 9 inches).

Germany: NA, 1982. An original manuscript. Text in German. Half pink silk Hardback with black leaves. Home made label to the front board. In addition to the blank end paper and illustrated title page, there are 8 further leaves, inked to one side only. The foreword explains how this is a tale picked up from Elves dancing in the round in the forest. There are then six leaves which contain verses in manuscript, and a silhouette drawing to each leaf. Finally, there is a naive end paper with the moon and sheep. The boards are in sound but slightly rubbed and bumped condition. Internally, the pages are in good, clean condition with no significant marks. An attractive piece of home production. First Edition. 23cm x 31cm

The hand coloured illustrations are all by Lothar Meggendorfer. As with other copies for sale online, the pages are finger marked, darkened and some have been professionally repaired. Overall now in a good condition. 245 x 330 mm (9¾ x 13 inches).

Harrisburg, PA: G.S. Peters, 1841. A scarce Genovefa chapbook. Seems to be the second edition by Peters. The retelling of the legend of Saint Geneviève of Brabant, printed by Gustavus Peters of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Peters was a German immigrant printer and thought to be America's first colour printer. Text in German. Illustrated to first page - which also serves as the front cover. Age toned, with some finger marks. Small owner's stamp to the head of the first page. Overall in decent condition. 38 pages. 165 x 105 mm (6½ x 4¼ inches) A scarce Pennsylvania German printing, there are no copies recorded of this issue on Jisc / Copac. On FirstSearch we can find a record of the first edition of 1836, but no reference to this edition. Publication date aside, our copy conforms to OCLC: 316900097. New York: McLoughlin Bro's Publisher's, 1874. An eight page hand-coloured woodcut children's ABC / alphabet picture book. The booklet's yellow covers read: The History of an Apple Pie to front, and has a McLoughlin Brothers advertisement to the back cover. Title page reads: Dunigan's History of an Apple Pie. No Date, but circa 1874. Three large decorated capitals per page; cuts for letters I, L, O, R, U and Z are signed Elton (i.e. Robert E. Elton - John McLoughlin's mentor and early business partner). The yellow covers are clean, but with a little darkening. There are a few minor closed tears (1-2mm) to the edges. Inside, it is clean and tidy throughout. The book has been re-sewn. 190 x 115 mm (7½ x 4½ inches).

Trois grandes capitales décorées par page ; les coupes pour les lettres I, L, O, R, U et Z sont signées Elton (c'est-à-dire le mentor de John McLoughlin et son premier partenaire commercial). Les couvertures jaunes sont propres, mais légèrement assombries. Il y a quelques petites déchirures fermées (1-2mm) sur les bords. L'intérieur est propre et bien rangé. Le livre a été recousu. 190 x 115 mm

London: 1910. An attractive children's game. There a blocks of wood, with 6 paintings pasted onto the six sides, when placed together they make a picture showing children playing. Held in a wooden box, which once have a clasp (now broken). There are 4 chromolithographed illustrations in the box, and a fifth is pasted onto the lid. We suspect there was a sixth, now missing. The blocks have rubbing to the corners, with slight loss of image. The lithographs are on thin paper, and has small nicks and tears to the edges, but still attractive. Darkening to the image on the front board. Overall, an attractive game, showing signs of regular use. This was clearly British, from the red post box on the image to the lid of the box. The dating is from the children's clothing, particularly the sailor suit on the cover. 150 x 190 mm (6 x 7½ inches).

Berlin: Herbert Stuffer Verlag, 1935. Four large sheets of Stuffer's Bilderbogen. In total, there were only 12 issued. Initially in a two part version for children to colour (with one colour and one identical but in black and white). There was also the "Blockausgabe" which offered the sheets in a large format and full colour edition. The sheets offered here are as follows: #1 Kapitän Knackbrot gründet einen Zirkus (text by Friedrich Böer with illustration by Werner Bürger). A good, clean copy, with a small closed tear to the left edge. Otherwise in very good condition; #2 Das schöne Heidelberg ( illustration by Andreas Meier, text by E.A. Hermann). A little foxing but otherwise clean, a small closed tear to the left edge of the crease. A little marking to the blank rear. #10 Der Osterhase: (Illustrations by Andreas Meier, words by E.A. Herrmann). A little darkening. A little creasing, and a couple of small closed tears to the left edge. #12 Die sieben Sterne: (words by E.A. Herrmann, illustration by Margarete Kellner). Although clean, the picture has been torn in half at some point, but very neatly repaired (you can only just see the remnant of the tear). Otherwise sound. There is a crease to the centre of each of the plates. These give the impression of never having been bound into a book. 450 by 320mm (17¾ by 12½ inches)

Bien que propre, l'image a été déchirée en deux à un moment donné, mais très proprement réparée (on ne voit que le reste de la déchirure). L'image est par ailleurs en bon état. Il y a un pli au centre de chacune des planches. Elles donnent l'impression de n'avoir jamais été reliées dans un livre. 450 x 320 mm.

Amsterdam: H.G. Koster Hgz, 1869. Stated fourth edition to title page. This was originally published by Nolet & Zoon. This edition is published by Koster, but appears to be substantially the same. Four tinted lithographs (Frontis and three plates with two images to each) by van P. Blommers of 's Hage. The lithographs were presumably made for an earlier collection, as they have random plate numbers to them (13, 19, 25, 3, 50, 42, 45). Buckram spine and blue printed boards. No titles. A little nicked and bumped to the edges. Front and rear end papers are each 2/3rds of the width of the book, but appear to have been produced this way (not torn or cut). Slight darkening to the pages, and a few foxing spots, but overall a very nice copy of a scarce item. No copies of either edition currently available online, and this edition is unrecorded on FirstSearch / OCLC / Worldcat. 70 pages. 155 by 100mm (6 by 4 inches).
