London: Grant and Griffith. Successors to John Harris, 1845. A nice copy of this children's book, illustrated with 13 attractive hand coloured illustrations. An American moral tale, dating to around 1806, this was a new edition, undated but 1845. Yellow stiff card boards. The boards are clean, but the spine has deteriorated and repaired with archival tape. Rear panel shows other works by Grant and Griffith. Other than spine damage, the book is clean and tidy throughout. The English edition is quite scarce. 48 pages. 17.5cm x 11cm.

Munchen: Braun & Schneider, 1908. First edition. A scarce German children's book, exhibiting the racist opinions of the time. Original mustard hardback with vignette illustration and text to the front board. Paper on the boards are pasted over a mustard cloth. There is a red stain to about half of the front cover, and bubbling from old damp to the rear board. Still presentable though. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with just a touch of marking / darkening to the pages. 40 pages. Coloured illustrations throughout. We are selling this as a genuine historical item, and not as an endorsement of the views or language within. 33cm x 25cm.

Wien: M. Trentsensky. First Edition, Circa 1860. A lovely set of six lithographs from the series Das Alpenleben. Published by Trentsensky and printed by E. Sieger, the full set comprised of 12 lithographs, each with a number of vignettes of alpine life upon them. We offer numbers 1-6 (So half a set). Our sheets are beautifully hand coloured. The base area of each is painted grey, suggesting that these were intended as cut out sheets (or "mandl sheets" ) for children to play with. The plates are in good, clean condition, on thin paper. This is somewhat toned with age. There is minimal edgewear, but a few very minor closed tears to the edges. Each sheet is  235 by 370mm (9¼ by 14½ inches).

München: Verlag der Jugendblätter (Carl Schnell), 1910. A lovely copy of this first edition - scarce in its original protective slipcase. Book is in beautiful original condition. Clean blue cloth with a picture of a small boy driving a carriage tipped onto the front board and gilt titles and decoration around and to the spine. No significant marking or bumping to the boards - in excellent condition. Inside in excellent, clean and unmarked condition. The card slipcase is a little darkened / foxed with age. Publication details are on a paper label pasted to the slipcase. Although this has a little bumping / edgewear - it has done its part and kept the book in near perfect condition. Beautiful children's poems, 6 full-colour images, plus cover image in four-color print by Hermann Kaulbach and many black and white drawings in the text or as full page images by Kaulbach. Hermann von Kaulbach (1846–1909) was a German painter of the Munich School. He became best known for his portraits of children. 64 pages. 300 by 230mm (11¾ by 9 inches).

Germany: NA, 1982. An original manuscript. Text in German. Half pink silk Hardback with black leaves. Home made label to the front board. In addition to the blank end paper and illustrated title page, there are 8 further leaves, inked to one side only. The foreword explains how this is a tale picked up from Elves dancing in the round in the forest. There are then six leaves which contain verses in manuscript, and a silhouette drawing to each leaf. Finally, there is a naive end paper with the moon and sheep. The boards are in sound but slightly rubbed and bumped condition. Internally, the pages are in good, clean condition with no significant marks. An attractive piece of home production. First Edition. 23cm x 31cm

Six feuillets contiennent des vers manuscrits et chaque feuillet est orné d'un dessin de silhouette. Enfin, un papier de fin naïf représente la lune et les moutons. Les planches sont en bon état, mais légèrement frottées et bosselées. A l'intérieur, les pages sont en bon état, propres et sans marques significatives. Leipzig: Verlag Enst Wunderlich, 1947. First edition. A scarce children's book, with verses by Susi Wintgen and illustrations by Hildegard Bürger. Each page gives details of a different fruit. Green paper covers (slightly faded but sound) and twelve pages. These have each been hand coloured in water colour. We cannot find any other copies of this work, so are unsure if this is a black and white outline book for children to colour, or was sold coloured. We suspect the former, as the colouring is a little erratic. To some pages it is quite skillful, but other pages are a little clumsy. Either way, it is a charming children's work. 9.5cm x 12cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 832526636. No copies for sale at the time of cataloguing.

The hand coloured illustrations are all by Lothar Meggendorfer. As with other copies for sale online, the pages are finger marked, darkened and some have been professionally repaired. Overall now in a good condition. 245 x 330 mm (9¾ x 13 inches).

Original pages are age toned, and there are some fingermarks, but the book is still beautiful. Konrad Gustav Süs was a German painter, illustrator and children's book author. 44 pages. 285 x 220 mm.

Berlin, Glogau: C. Flemming, 1889. An attractive copy of this German children's Christmas book. First edition. No date but 1889. Illustrated hardback boards. The binding is fairly new, with the original cover laid onto the front board. New end papers. The book itself is coloured lithographic sheets, text, music and illustration throughout, in the style of early Art Nouveau. A touch darkened in places and some finger marks, but overall in very good condition. 40 stiff card pages mounted on hinges to the spine. 290 by 220mm (11½ by 8¾ inches).

Harrisburg, PA: G.S. Peters, 1841. A scarce Genovefa chapbook. Seems to be the second edition by Peters. The retelling of the legend of Saint Geneviève of Brabant, printed by Gustavus Peters of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Peters was a German immigrant printer and thought to be America's first colour printer. Text in German. Illustrated to first page - which also serves as the front cover. Age toned, with some finger marks. Small owner's stamp to the head of the first page. Overall in decent condition. 38 pages. 165 x 105 mm (6½ x 4¼ inches) A scarce Pennsylvania German printing, there are no copies recorded of this issue on Jisc / Copac. On FirstSearch we can find a record of the first edition of 1836, but no reference to this edition. Publication date aside, our copy conforms to OCLC: 316900097. London: 1910. An attractive children's game. There a blocks of wood, with 6 paintings pasted onto the six sides, when placed together they make a picture showing children playing. Held in a wooden box, which once have a clasp (now broken). There are 4 chromolithographed illustrations in the box, and a fifth is pasted onto the lid. We suspect there was a sixth, now missing. The blocks have rubbing to the corners, with slight loss of image. The lithographs are on thin paper, and has small nicks and tears to the edges, but still attractive. Darkening to the image on the front board. Overall, an attractive game, showing signs of regular use. This was clearly British, from the red post box on the image to the lid of the box. The dating is from the children's clothing, particularly the sailor suit on the cover. 150 x 190 mm (6 x 7½ inches).

Bruxelles: Édition de l'Art décoratif C. Dangotte, 1918. Rare first edition. A lovely copy of this collection of illustrations showing aeroplanes in fantasy settings, with children in each. Half are coloured, and half uncoloured. Blue paper covers. The rear cover has a closed tear which has been repaired with tape. The covers are a little dusty. Spine has been repaired with archival tape at some point (barely noticeable). After a title page, the charming illustrations give a child's imaginary journey on an aircraft through fairy land. This is a rare item. No copies are currently available for sale. There was also a numbered edition on Japon. This is one of the 'collection du Petit Artiste'. Jeanne Hovine (1888-1992) was an avid comic book artist (along with her sister Laure). Later she turned to the theatre and cinema, where she acted under the pseudonym Anne-Marie Ferrières. She continued to work in theatre and radio until she was 100. 330 x 240 mm.

Jeanne Hovine (1888-1992) était une passionnée de bandes dessinées (avec sa sœur Laure). Plus tard, elle se tourne vers le théâtre et le cinéma, où elle joue sous le pseudonyme d'Anne-Marie Ferrières.
