A humorous story about a dog and a cat who, in their master's absence, dress up as lord and mistress in the hope of a tasty meal. They are exposed and beaten by the servants. The cat catches a rat, the dog catches thieves, and thus they are valued again. The humorous illustrations and the rhyming text are not entirely synchronized. The lithographs are hand-coloured in bright colours. Although undated, there is no indication of later edition. Not in Brinkman; in Nieuwsblad voor den Boekhandel dated as 1841. 29 pages. 10cm x 16.5cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 64154813. This suggests only one library holding at the KNB.

Green paper covers (slightly faded but sound) and twelve pages. These have each been hand coloured in water colour. We cannot find any other copies of this work, so are unsure if this is a black and white outline book for children to colour, or was sold coloured. We suspect the former, as the colouring is a little erratic. To some pages it is quite skillful, but other pages are a little clumsy. Either way, it is a charming children's work. 9.5cm x 12cm. .

Others (including ours) are numbered a.2, a.3 etc. Condition is good, but a little marked and darkened. Slight foxing and handling. The prints we hold are: Le Sabot (a.2); L'escarpolete (a.3); Le Bain (a.7) with light crease to corner; Le Guerre (b.1). light stain to top half; Le Petits Canons (b.2) foxing spots and a 2cm closed tear to the bottom edge (not affecting engraved area); Le Culebute (b.4); Le Palet (b.6) moderate markingLe Court Baston (c.4). We can find no copies of these original printings available to purchase at the time of cataloguing. Claudine Bouzonnet Stella succeeded her late uncle, Jacques Stella, as the head of her family's print workshop at the Louvre royal palace in 1657. That year, she engraved and published Stella's designs for fifty scenes of putti playing games, including the one seen here. This book circulated throughout Europe, eventually serving as a visual source for the eighteenth-century decorative arts.

330 x 240 mm.
