Brusselles: Librairie Historique-Artistic, 1845. A collection of eight hand coloured lithographs by Duverger and Clerman after Jacques Charles Bar's illustrations. This set are from a Spanish edition. There is no text other than the titles (In french / Spanish / Latin), but the 8 plates are each under home made passe-partout. The lithographs comprise both members of the Religious and members of the Catholic Chivalric orders: An Archbishop; A Jesuit; A Carthusian nun in ceremonial dress, A Chierigo Minor; gran croce dele ordine di Carlo III (A member of the Order of the Grand Cross of Charles III; A cavalier of the Order of Calatrava; An Alejano / Alexien; A Religious from the Order of the Visitation. The plates have some edgewear / chipping and creasing to the edges, but this is hidden by the passe partout. The lithographed sheets are 270 by 185mm (10¾ by 7¼ inches). The passe partout is 300mm x 240mm.

London: E. Owen, 1751. First Edition. The full title continues: Wherein the Account given of that book by the Author of the the Divine Legation of Moses Demonstrated &c. is particularly considered; The Antiquity of the book vindicated; The great Test (Chap. xix. 25-) explained; and a Future State shewn to have been the Popular Belief of the Ancient Jews or Hebrews. Full contemporary calf, with gilt decoration and titles to the spine. Owner's bookplate to the inside front board. This copy is a First edition of the Dissertation bound in with a First edition of the preface. (conforming to the ESTC entries for both works). The two title pages are bound in together at the front of the work, then the Preface is presented, followed by the Dissertation. Both works have their errata present. There is an owner's name in ink to the title page of the preface. The two titles show that the dissertation was published by E. Owen, and sold by S. Birt & B. Dod, S. Bathurst, J. Fletcher, W. Thurlbourn & E. Score. The preface was printed for W. Johnston, P. Davey & B. Law. The binding is somewhat rubbed, but holding together well. A little bumping to the corners of the boards. Slight scuffing to the boards. The gilt to the spine is somewhat rubbed but still attractive. There is a little nicking to the head and tail of the spine. Charles Peters [1690-1774] was a Cornish Church of England rector and Hebrew Scholar. Described by Polwhele as "The first Hebrew Scholar in Europe" Presumably meaning foremost! The production of this work is unusual, more in the style of the Seventeenth Century pamphleteers. The Dissertation, first published (as here) in 1751 was critical of William Warburton's work "The Divine Legation of Moses." Warburton responded, and a second edition (revised) was published in 1757. At this point, a lengthy preface was also added to deal with Warburton's comments. This was also published separately. It is this separate Preface offered here. Later (1760) he also published an Appendix, dealing further with Warburton's comments. He dies in 1774 and a volume of his sermons was produced in 1776. London: Robert Clavel and James Knaplock in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1704. First edition. Later Vellum with titles stamped to spine. Overall a decent copy. The vellum is clean and tidy, with a little foxing / marking only. A large, uncut copy. Lower corner of leaf D4 torn away, with loss of a few words from six lines of text. Paper flaw to leaves H-H2, with loss of a single word to recto and verso of each.ESTC T75521. 64p pages.
Samuel Wesley (1663-1735), Anglican clergyman and poet. Public outcry to the criticism of dissenting education in his 'Letter from a Country Divine' to his friend in London concerning the education of dissenters in their private academies (London, 1702) led Wesley to respond voraciously, firstly with this work, and then again in A Reply to Mr. Palmer's Vindication (1707).

London: 1813. An Anti-Catholic pamphlet, printed by J.J. Stockdale. An examination of the Claims of Roman Catholics, particularly those in Ireland, and concluding that "Too much is already conceded to the Papists." The initials W.L.J. appear in ink to the top of the title page. There are some annotations in ink throughout the text. These are in a contemporary hand, and appear to be proofing corrections - changing the grammar, correcting errors, and altering some footnotes. Perhaps this copy was being prepared for a second publication? If so, it came to nothing, as Copac cites only two holdings of this issue, with no others cited.Good clean, but with no wrappers (if any). This was once part of a larger work, and has been removed from this - but was published alone (with price, printers details and colophon here). There is a touch of darkening to the outside pages. Internally clean, with the annotations as described above. This work was published anonymously, and there is no reference on Copac or in bibliographies of anonymous literature to any author. However, the name Richard Mence Esq. is written in a contemporary hand alongside the stated "Country Gentleman" This would certainly fit well. Richard Mence was a Barrister, at Middle Temple, who went on to write about the Law of Libel. He was active in writing at this time, and his dedication in the Law of Libel, was to those who oppose "Disloyal and Seditious Principles" These almost certainly included Catholic Emancipation. With his awareness of Libel laws, he was perhaps wise to remain anonymous! 49 [i]. pp

London: Luke Meredith at The King's Head, 1685. Full title reads: "A loyal tear dropt on the vault of the high and mighty Prince Charles II. Of glorious and happy memory. By Henry Anderson, M.A. vicar of Kingsumborne in Hampshire."
The original funeral oration for Charles II. Now bound in faux leather boards with gilt titles to the front board. End papers from time of binding. Bound in to the rear are two additional leaves, printed in Circa 1816 and each offering a hymn composed by Joseph Wiggins. He was a member of Stretton Friendly Society (Quakers). The faux leather cover is clean and bright. The text is mainly clean, with a touch of marking / foxing to it. small number 19 to title suggests that this has been abstracted from a larger collection at some point. [6], 26, [4] p. ; 4⁰. Signatures: A-D⁴ +2 leaves. 200 x 150 mm (7¾ x 6 inches).

London: Seeley, Jackson & Halliday, 1867. A first edition of this scarce work. Dark brown cloth. Contemporary brown end papers and owner's contemporary gift inscription to the FFEP. A quite reasonable copy. The brown cloth has marking to the corner of the front board, and there is some light fading from water spots to the rear board. The spine has darkened so that the title is illegible (no gilt, if ever any, remains). Internally clean and tidy throughout, with a touch of darkening to the pages only. Samuel, Garratt 1817-1907 was also the author of "Signs of the Times" and "World Without End" amongst other works. He was an Evangelist within the Church of England. These sermons were given at the end of his tenure at Trinity Church in Lincoln's Inn Fields, before his departure for Ipswich. X, [1]-212, [ii]. pp

London: Tho. Newcomb for Henry Brome: 1678. Disbound sermon. Paper covers. Title, with black funereal border. There is a touch of nicking to the corners of the paper cover. The cover is darkened - the rest of the sermon is clean and tidy. A sound copy. Anti Catholic sermon preached at the funeral of Lloyd's parishioner, Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey, the justice of the peace to whom Titus Oates made his first depositions concerning the Popish Plot. Shortly thereafter, he was found mysteriously murdered in a ditch on Primrose Hill. This led to the arrests of several Catholics - and was the beginning of the hysteria of the Popish Plot. It would appear, in hindsight, that Oates himself was involved in the murder, and that its aim was to bolster support for his anti-Catholic allegations. 42pp - Wing L2700

London: Burns & Oates, 1911. A very nice copy of this First edition. Soggarth (derived from sagart), is an Irish word for a Priest. The blue cloth is clean and tidy, with no marking. The gilt is clean and bright. There is just a touch of bumping to the edges of the cloth. Internally clean and tidy, with a little darkening / foxing to the page edges. Bookplate from Syon Abbey in Chudleigh. Original blue cloth, with gilt titles. Rough cut pages. xii, 95, [v] pp.
Matthew Russell (1834-1912), was an Irish Roman Catholic priest, and Jesuit. He was the author of several books and collections of poetry - and was the founder and editor of "Catholic Ireland" Which became the literary journal "Irish Monthly" this "discovered" several prominent Irish authors, including Oscar Wilde.

London: L. B. Seeley and Son, 1825. Original diced Russian calf with gilt decoration to spine. Bookplate to the inside board. Contemporary gift inscription to the end paper. There is an engraved vignette to the title page. After the treatise on Prayer, there is around 70 pages with examples of prayers for the faithful to use, and an index.

Edward Bickersteth (1786-1850) was an evangelical Church of England clergyman. He was active in promoting the Evangelical Alliance and was strongly opposed to the Tractarian movement. His son became the Bishop of Exeter.

There is rubbing to the edges of the boards, with a little bumping to the corners. The gilt to the spine has been rubbed and the titles are no longer legible. It appears that the book may have been repaired in the distant past (unsure) the end papers look a little newer. The binding is strong and secure. Internally clean and tidy throughout with just a little darkening. Overall a sound copy.

London: Ric. Chiswell at the Rose and Crown in St Paul's Church Yard: 1688. pamphlet, disbound. Title, text, adverts (for Chiswell). "A Clear Proof" although written as through from a Protestant, was in fact a Catholic work, trying to disprove the certainty of Protestantism. This work is a rebuttal of that work. Apart from a little light foxing in a few places, the text is clean and crisp throughout and well bound together. John Williams (C1633–1709), was a Church of England minister, and later Bishop of Chichester (not to be confused with the Jesuit priest of the same period). He was very anti-Catholic and wrote a large number of pamphlets attacking Rome. He argued that the Popish plot was genuine, and was firmly opposed to the accession of James. Geneva / Geneve: N/A, 1820. Undated, but likely from 1818-1822, this fine watercolour of Mary in the style of Raphaël, although unsigned has a contemporary paper attribution / provenance lightly tipped to it. This states that it was painted by Schenker and came from a collection. It was given by Ferdinand Dupon (?) as a souvenir of his two little brothers. Edged in gilt, the painting is in very good condition, with just a couple of tiny marks to it. 110 by 80mm (4¼ by 3¼ inches).

Schenker (1760-1848) was primarily an engraver, born in Geneva, worked Paris. Pupil of Saint-Ours and Macret, he studied intaglio printing. Worked for Bartolozzi in England and France. Director of the 'Ecole de gravure de Genève' (1817-1822). He engraved with Gâtine the illustrations for the series 'Le Bon Genre' published by La Mésangère. He was also clearly a skilled water colourist.

Schenker (1760-1848) était avant tout un graveur, né à Genève, a travaillé à Paris. Elève de Saint-Ours et de Macret, il étudie la taille-douce. A travaillé pour Bartolozzi en Angleterre et en France. Directeur de l'Ecole de gravure de Genève (1817-1822). Il grave avec Gâtine les illustrations de la série 'Le Bon Genre' éditée par La Mésangère. Il était aussi manifestement un aquarelliste de talent.

Paris: Imprimerie et Librairie Classiques de Jules Delalain, 1840. Part of the Epitome Historiae Sacrae series. A nice dual language (Latin and French) work on the history of the Saints. Half leather binding with gilt decoration and titles to the spine. Marbled boards. A touch of bumping / handling only. Marbled end papers. Internally mainly clean and tidy, with a little marking / darkening to the pages. French and Latin facing pages help with the translation / reading of the text. Originally published in 1827, this was abridged from a longer Latin primer by Lhomond. Overall an attractive copy of this reprint. Charles François Lhomond (1727–1794) was a French priest, grammarian, and educator who was a native of Chaulnes, Somme. [iv], 182. pp. 140 by 90mm (5½ by 3½ inches).
