London: A very nice copy of a Breeches Bible published by Robert Barker in 1608. Bound in full 20th century mottled calf. Plain new endpapers. 4 raised bands to spine, blind decorations to compartments. Board edges patterned. No label or titles to spine. All title pages present. Final 3 pages, Psalms with very old repairs and one page inserted out of order. Psalms complete but Creed incomplete at end of book (So ends at page 92). All sections dated 1608. Robert Barker. The noted issues with this copy are: f68 marked as f96; f173 with pasted down border note; f329 (last of Ezekiel misbound in Daniel); f330 present but with loss of a large are of text; f434 mispaginated as f435; f435 has large ink stain to verso; f464 small closed tear; f483 torn with some loss; f490 mispaginated as f499; f534 complete but torn; Book of Psalms: 1st 10 pages unpaginated; p28 mispaginated as p27; p86 mispaginated as p66; pps 87/88 exchanged with pps 89/90; The final two leaves have been repaired, and the final leaf with moderate loss to the edges. As is inevitable with a Bible of this age, there are also tiny tears, nicks and edgewear, and a general darkening of the pages, nevertheless s a very nice example. This edition of the Geneva Bible received the nickname Breeches Bible, because on its erroneous translation of Genesis Chapter 3, Verse 7. The text reads: 'Then the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked, and they sewed figge tree leaves together, and made themselves breeches.' Each page is numbered to the recto only (if at all) so these are actually leaf numbers (so we refer to fn). To confuse matters further, the book of psalms numbers each page, not leaf. Full collation: [ii], 1-554, [1-98], [1]-91.pp Collation: [lacks blank q1], q2-Zzz10, A-L2, A-G3. Our copy substantially conforms to Darlow & Moule 225a. The states that it is substantially a close reprint of the 1605 quarto, with text ending on fo.554 (as does ours for the OT and NT) and with Gen. i. 3: 'Then God Sayd...' 240 by 170mm (9½ by 6¾ inches).

Originally published in installments between 1824-1826, it was part of the Catholic Emancipation debate. As ever, Cobbett was somewhat of a contrarian radical, and in this work supports the Catholic position.

The author traces the history of heresies from the Roman era, before focusing on the Inquisition, its creation, its influence, from the Albigensian and Cathar persecutions, to trials brought in Portugal in 1808. Dorbon 2506. Collation: 400., 415. pages. 20.5cm x 13cm. The most vibrant heresy in Europe was Catharism, also known as Albigensianism—for Albi, a city in southern France where it flourished. Catharism held that the universe was a battleground between good, which was spirit, and evil, which was matter. Human beings were believed to be spirits trapped in physical bodies.

The bindings have some nicking and chipping to them. The surface area is quite pitted. Still attractive. Each volume has vignettes and historiated initials to the beginning of each homily. Each homily has its own title page and date. These were obviously printed as separate homilies and bound together here. Text in French. Vol 1. 1707 4th Edition. This volume has had damage to the bottom edge (looks as if perhaps mice before binding or similar?). As a result, the text block has been shaved to the base (not affecting text). This has resulted in the book being 2.5 cm shorter than the other two volumes. Vol 2. 1710. This volume is the 3rd Edition. The front end paper has had the top 3 cm neatly cut away (seems to have been removing an ownership signature). Slight chipping to top edge. some water staining to the bottom edge, with some loss of paper to the bottom on about 20 pages (not affecting text). Volume 3. 1710. 3rd Edition. A little rubbing to the boards, but overall in good+ condition.

München / Monachii: Leysserius / Apud Cornelium Leysserium, 1631. 3rd Edition of this graphic account of Hell. München : Leysserius / Monachii : Apud Cornelium Leysserium
Engraved title and 9 full-page engravings in text depicting the torments of the damned in Hell by Philipp Sadeler.

Contemporary vellum with two brass and vellum clasps to close (one of the clasps is lacking). A quarter (2 cm) of the vellum to the spine is lost, with cracking to the spine edge. Some stains to boards. Ownership inscription on the front end paper and to the title page. Text is in Latin. Text block is clean and presentable. Some offsetting from the engraved plates. The plates appear to have been trimmed quite tightly but with minimal (if any) loss. This third edition seems to be a pocket edition, so that you are able to consult the torments at any time! The plates and typesetting seem to have been slightly re-worked from other (including later) editions by Leysserius. The dedication addresses the apostolic nuncio in Germany, bishop Pier Luigi Carafa (1581-1655), whose arms appear at foot of title. Eight torments are described, commented on and vividly illustrated with fine engravings, i.e. darkness, lamenting, hunger and thirst, stench, fire, excruciating remorse, ill company and desperation. The engraving related to lamenting shows an improbable music sheet with notes and lyrics ( Vae vae vae, ah ah ah ah, heu eheu aeternitas ) of the chant of sorrow sung by the damned.

Dünnh. II, 1399, 15.3 - "Immensely gruesome and drastic description of the torments of hell..." (Dünnhaupt on first edition in the same year). "Infernus" Together with "De Aeternitate" (1620) and "Caelum" (1635) were conceived as a trilogy. Jeremias Drexel S.J. (also known as Hieremias Drexelius or Drechsel) (1581–1638) was a Jesuit writer of devotional literature and a professor of the humanities and rhetoric. He served for 23 years as court preacher in Munich to Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria and his wife Elizabeth of Lorraine. He wrote numerous theological works.

There are also references to The Glossop Estate, and settlements in 1841. An annuity to Dr Sandon and his wife is mentioned, as is a re-settlement agreed on the date of the Duke of Surrey's marriage. Full contemporary straight grain dark red morocco, gilt lettered 'Miscellaneous' on the upper cover. Slight wear to the head of the spine, and lacks the clasp. It bears the engraved stationers' label of Bebbington's Bath Paper Warehouse, 426, Strand. 120 mm x 190 mm. Henry Charles Howard and his father were Roman Catholics, although his mother Lady Elizabeth Belasyse was Anglican. It is not clear if Howard was formally and nominally raised Anglican, or if he was already Catholic when he married into a prominent Whig (and therefore anti-Catholic) family in 1814. In 1829, after Catholic emancipation, the Earl of Surrey (as he now was) was elected a Member of Parliament. In 1839
his son, Henry Granville Fitzalan, Fourteenth Duke of Norfolk, married Augusta Lyons, the daughter of Admiral
Sir Edmund (afterwards Lord) Lyons, the ambassador at Athens. This necessitated a revision of his father's inheritance provisions.
