Petit livre cartonné, avec des planches couvertes d'une toile vert olive. Le logo de la marque Sésame est estampé sur la première page. Frontispice de John Ruskin. Paris: Bouasse Lebel, 1839. First edition. A nice copy of this lithograph depicting 44 of the female religious orders. Hand coloured illustration, with notes on each below. A rare lithograph in this large format. The Museé d'Art Religieux dates the original of this to between 1714 and 1719. This hand coloured lithograph is #16 in a series for the Encyclopédie Bouasse Lebel - other lithographs from this series were produced in 1839. There was also a matching lithograph showing the male religious orders. Our copy is pasted onto a stiff mounting board (and has been mounted at some point) so it is a good, strong copy, without edgewear. A little darkening to the sheet only. A couple of the black habits have a touch of surface loss (easy not to notice) it looks as if the paint has been pressed against the glass frame at some point and left some behind. The design shows us the representatives of the monastic orders dressed in their particular costume, full-length, head-on, in front of a grotto and convent behind. Although the costumes are exact, there are variations depending on the convent. Sheet is 52 cm X 66 cm (20½ by 26 inches). picture area 31 cm x 61 cm.

Une lithographie rare dans ce grand format. Le Musée d'Art Religieux date l'original de cette lithographie entre 1714 et 1719. Cette lithographie coloriée à la main est la 16e d'une série pour l'Encyclopédie Bouasse Lebel - d'autres lithographies de cette série ont été produites en 1839. Il y avait également une lithographie correspondante montrant les ordres religieux masculins. Notre exemplaire est collé sur un carton de montage rigide (et a été monté à un moment donné) ; il s'agit donc d'un bon exemplaire, solide, sans usure des bords. Un petit assombrissement sur la feuille seulement. Quelques habitudes noires présentent une légère perte de surface (facile à ne pas remarquer), comme si la peinture avait été pressée contre le cadre en verre à un moment donné et avait laissé des traces. Le dessin nous montre les représentants des ordres monastiques vêtus de leur costume particulier, en pied, de face, devant une grotte et un couvent à l'arrière. Bien que les costumes soient exacts, il y a des variations selon les couvents. La feuille mesure 52 cm x 66 cm (20½ x 26 pouces). La surface de l'image est de 31 cm x 61 cm.

London: John Mitchell, 1851. A lovely copy of this First Edition. Original red blind embossed boards with bevelled edges and gilt decoration and titles to the spine. A touch of marking, but overall in excellent condition. Internally, a good, clean copy, with light foxing and marking to the pages. Gift inscription to Hélené, the wife of Prince Roger de Podenas (an Indre Loire dignitary). After and engraved title, there are 13 engraved text leaves, and 12 engraved leaves, each plated with a printed (titled) paper guard. Complete. The book has been recently restored, so the perfect binding is perfect once more ! (Perhaps the most inaccurate bookbinding term, this style of binding is notorious for its falling apart as the glue disintegrates. A very nice copy. The tissue guards include The merciless servant; The lord of the vineyard; The wicked husbandmen; The faithful servant; The ten virgins; The sheep and the goats; The good samaritan; The prodigal son; Dives and Lazarus & The good shepherd. illustrations are engraved by F. Paris: Philippe Renouard, 1903. An anonymous essay on the charitable and good works of Mademoiselle E. Lozuet, followed by the eulogy spoken at her grave-side by M.J.C. Lozuet was clearly a compassionate woman, who anonymously gave away all of the income she inherited in good works. Half black leather binding, with black marbled boards. Gilt title to spine. A little rubbing to the edge of the boards. Marbled end papers. Sepia photograph of Mademoiselle Lozuet and tissue guard, followed by the two essays. Good clean copy, with just a few light foxing spots. There is a slight bowing to the boards, but not major. 12 pages. 260 by 165mm (10¼ by 6½ inches).

London: Burns and Oates, 1910. First edition. Hardback. Pale brown cloth covers with gilt titles. Book plate of Syon Abbey to the inside front board. Three black and white illustrated plates. Rough cut page edges. There is a touch of fading to the cloth and a very pale cup ring to the front board. Slight bowing to the boards only. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with very slight foxing to the end papers. [vi], 78 pp. + plates

There is an anonymous biographical memoir of Hingston at the beginning of the book, written in a rather florid, late Victorian style. It is recorded here that she died in a tragic boating accident in 1907. In fact, her death was the result of a suicide pact, agreed with her fiancee Shirley Davidson, the son of Sir Charles Peers Davidson, Chief Justice of the Quebec Supreme Court. He refused to allow the marriage, as Aileen was a Roman Catholic. Ironically, in 1912, another son, Thornton Davidson - Shirley's older brother, was to die on the Titanic.

Paris: Charles Wittman. A large and attractive engraving of Pope Pius X (Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto) Circa 1903. It is signed to the engraving "a monsieur Ch Wittmann, cordialement E Burney." To the base of the sheet, and in the same (or very similar) hand is written "gravée par Burnay, aprés C Gaillard." This is problematic. We can find no copies of this engraving online, but Burney and Gaillard often worked together, and Gaillard was Burney's teacher. BUT Gaillard died in 1887, years before the Elevation of Sarto to the Papacy. This work uses an identical frame / surround to Gaillard's portrait of Pius IX, which made his name. (obviouisly the name panel has been updated). We suspect that Burney is paying homage to his tutor, in the use and credit of the frame and style. The engraving is in very good condition, with a good, deep impression. There is a little foxing to the edges of the sheet, and a couple of very small tears to the page edge. Francois Eugéne Burney (1845-1907) was a French engraver and illustrator. Ferdinand Gaillard (1834-1887). Chrales Wittmann was a Parisian Intaglio printer. He often worked with Burney, and presumably was also the printer of this sheet, which Burney has signed for him. Engraved panel is 49cm x 34cm. The sheet is 62cm x 46cm. First Edition.

. Une grande et belle gravure du pape Pie X (Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto) datant de 1903. Elle est signée sur la gravure "a monsieur Ch Wittmann, cordialement E Burney". Au bas de la feuille, et de la même main (ou d'une main très similaire), est écrit "gravée par Burnay, aprés C Gaillard". Cette mention est problématique. Nous n'avons trouvé aucune copie de cette gravure en ligne, mais Burney et Gaillard ont souvent travaillé ensemble, et Gaillard était le professeur de Burney. MAIS Gaillard est mort en 1887, des années avant l'élévation de Sarto à la papauté. Cette œuvre utilise un cadre identique au portrait de Pie IX de Gaillard, qui a fait sa renommée. (évidemment, le panneau du nom a été mis à jour). Nous soupçonnons que Burney rend hommage à son tuteur, dans l'utilisation et la reconnaissance du cadre et du style. La gravure est en très bon état, avec une bonne impression profonde. Il y a un peu de rousseur sur les bords de la feuille, et quelques très petites déchirures sur le bord de la page. François Eugène Burney (1845-1907) était un graveur et illustrateur français. Ferdinand Gaillard (1834-1887). Chrales Wittmann était un imprimeur en taille-douce parisien. Il a souvent travaillé avec Burney, et a probablement été l'imprimeur de cette feuille, que Burney a signée pour lui. Le panneau gravé mesure 49 cm x 34 cm. La feuille mesure 62 cm x 46 cm. Première édition.

Bourges: S.P, 1781. First edition. A lovely broadside publicising the funeral of Fr Pierre Dumont. Single sheet. 42cm x 52cm. An unusually large sheet, with two beautiful woodcut devices. Folded twice, with creases here, and a few other creases. Small (2cm) closed tear to the top edge of the sheet. Mostly clean, with a couple of tiny spots, and slight darkening to the right edge. A lovely copy, with beautiful bold printing. Text reads: "You are requested to attend the services at the end of the year which will be held for the repose of the soul of Master PIERRE DUMONT, Priest, Doctor of the Faculty of Theology, Canon of the Church of Bourges, Monday 17 December 1781; from eight o'clock until noon, in the Church of the RR. PP. Carmelites where Masters & Ladies will be if they please. MAY HE REST IN PEACE."

. Première édition. Une jolie affiche annonçant les funérailles du père Pierre Dumont. Feuille simple. 42 cm x 52 cm. Une feuille inhabituellement grande, avec deux magnifiques gravures sur bois. Pliée deux fois, avec des plis ici et là, et quelques autres plis. Petite déchirure fermée (2 cm) sur le bord supérieur de la feuille. Globalement propre, avec quelques petites taches et un léger noircissement sur le bord droit. Un bel exemplaire, avec une belle impression en caractères gras. Le texte dit : « Vous êtes priés d'assister aux offices qui seront célébrés à la fin de l'année pour le repos de l'âme de Maître PIERRE DUMONT, prêtre, docteur de la faculté de théologie, chanoine de l'église de Bourges, le lundi 17 décembre 1781, de huit heures à midi, dans l'église des RR. PP. Carmélites où les maîtres et les dames seront présents s'ils le souhaitent. QU'IL REPOSE EN PAIX. »

Antwerp: Sadeler / Sadler, C1585. A lovely engraving from the series Vita Christi / The Life of Christ after Maarten de Vos. This is plate 5. Good, clean, strong engraving, would appear to be an early impression from the block. Lettered below left "M. de Vos inven / Adria. Collaert sculp" and at right "Sadler excu". In the margin two lines of Latin "Enthea.... montis" and "Matth. 7.". Numbered upper centre "V." Held in an archival pouch and under a large passepartout (50cm x 40cm), with just a touch of marking to it. From a series of twelve plates engraved by Adriaen Collaert (1560-1618) and Raphael Sadeler (New Hollstein 238-247). After Maarten de Vos (Flemish, 1532–1603). This conforms exactly with the British Museum ref: 1910,0208.22 and we have taken the dating from there.

Paris: Girodet-Trioson, C1805. A fabulous large engraved portrait of Pie VII (Pius VII) delineated by E. Robert after a portrait of Jacques-Louis David. It was published by the lithographer Anne Louis Girodet-Trioson. Although undated, the original painting in the Louvre was dated 1805, and this was the period that Girodet-Trioson was most active. This is a close up of David's work, focussing on the head and shoulders. Title to base. The engraved picture is 48cm x 42cm. The sheet is 54cm x 45cm. Overall in very good condition, with just a touch of marking / darkening to the edges. There are a couple of tiny closed tears to the edge. Overall an excellent example of a rare print. We cannot find another example of this engraving.

. Un fabuleux grand portrait gravé de Pie VII délimité par E. Robert d'après un portrait de Jacques-Louis David. Il a été publié par le lithographe Anne Louis Girodet-Trioson. Bien qu'il ne soit pas daté, le tableau original conservé au Louvre est daté de 1805, période à laquelle Girodet-Trioson était le plus actif. Il s'agit d'un gros plan de l'œuvre de David, qui se concentre sur la tête et les épaules. Titre à la base. L'image gravée mesure 48 cm x 42 cm. La feuille mesure 54 cm x 45 cm. Dans l'ensemble en très bon état, avec juste une touche de marquage / assombrissement sur les bords. Il y a quelques petites déchirures fermées sur le bord. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'un excellent exemple d'une estampe rare. Nous n'avons pas trouvé d'autre exemple de cette gravure.

Londini [London]: Guil [William] Downing: 1673. First Edition. Fairly recent (1970's ?) half leather binding with gilt titles to spine and marbled boards. The recent binding is in good condition. The text block is in good condition, with a little darkening / toning to the pages. Thomas Tully (1620–1676) was an Anglican clergyman. He held a preferment at Ripon. He was a conforming Calvinist voice in the post-Restoration Church of England. [viii], 1-153, [vii]. pp Wing T3248 Première édition. Reliure demi-cuir assez récente (années 1970 ?) avec titres dorés au dos et plats marbrés. La reliure récente est en bon état. Le bloc de texte est en bon état, avec un peu d'assombrissement / virage aux pages. Thomas Tully (1620-1676) était un ecclésiastique anglican. Il avait une promotion à Ripon. Il était une voix calviniste conforme dans l'Église d'Angleterre après la restauration. [viii], 1-153, [vii]. pp Aile T3248

Fulignio: Antonio Marriotti, 1682. First edition. Original publishers paper covered boards. Recent buckram spine. Title on a paper label to the spine. The book contains forty sermons by Mattioli. There are numerous woodcut vignettes, historiated capitals and other designs. Title (end papers look newer, although still quite old), dedication, imprimatur, author note, subject index, twenty sermons, biblical index, index of notable things, printer's register. NB - the text is entirely in Italian. The publisher's paper boards have a few minor stains to them. The spine is new, and is in "as new" condition. The end papers (and inside board lining) looks newer, but has a watermark of a bird on three mountains. I have traced this back to three items, all bound in Italy between 1650 and 1690 - so they probably are original. The title page has some darkening / foxing to it, the rest of the pages have a touch of darkening / marking. The binding has slightly cracked to register +, but is still holding well. A couple of the pages have closed tears, where they have strained to the binding, and the rear end paper has a loss of about 1 inch square. Otherwise sound. There is only one copy recorded at Copac (BL). There are a small number held in Italy. At the time of writing this, there are no other copies available, and none recently sold. There is a digitised copy of part of a first edition (up to p 184) (held at the Bavarian State Library). This has an ornate additional page (in the style of a title). I believe this is a later large bookplate. There are two reasons for this. Although the digitisation makes it hard to certain, this looks like a steel engraving, it is certainly in a different style to any of the woodcuts. Additionally, my copy, which is complete, has its complete register, and so is not lacking any pages. [xvi], 1-512, i-xxvii pp. 23cm x 17cm Première édition. Plats d'édition originaux recouverts de papier. Dos récent en percaline. Titre sur une étiquette papier au dos. Le livre contient quarante sermons de Mattioli. Il existe de nombreuses vignettes gravées sur bois, des chapiteaux historiés et d'autres dessins. Titre (les pages paraissent plus récentes, quoique encore assez anciennes), dédicace, imprimatur, note de l'auteur, index des sujets, vingt sermons, index biblique, index des choses notables, registre de l'imprimeur. NB - le texte est entièrement en italien. Les cartons de l'éditeur présentent quelques taches mineures. Le dos est neuf et est dans un état "comme neuf". Les papiers de garde (et la doublure intérieure du carton) ont l'air plus récents, mais ont un filigrane d'un oiseau sur trois montagnes. J'ai retracé cela jusqu'à trois objets, tous reliés en Italie entre 1650 et 1690 - ils sont donc probablement originaux. La page de titre présente des assombrissements / rousseurs, le reste des pages a une touche d'assombrissement / marquage. La reliure s'est légèrement craquelée au registre +, mais tient toujours bien. Quelques pages ont des déchirures fermées, où elles ont tendu à la reliure, et le papier de fin arrière a une perte d'environ 1 pouce carré. Sinon le son. Il n'y a qu'un seul exemplaire enregistré chez Copac (BL). Il y en a un petit nombre détenu en Italie. Au moment d'écrire ces lignes, il n'y a pas d'autres exemplaires disponibles et aucun n'a été vendu récemment. Il existe une copie numérisée d'une partie d'une première édition (jusqu'à la p 184) (conservée à la Bibliothèque d'État de Bavière). Cela a une page supplémentaire ornée (dans le style d'un titre). Je crois qu'il s'agit d'un grand ex-libris ultérieur. Il y a deux raisons à cela. Bien que la numérisation rende difficile à certains, cela ressemble à une gravure sur acier, c'est certainement dans un style différent de l'une des gravures sur bois. De plus, mon exemplaire, qui est complet, a son registre complet et ne manque donc pas de pages. [xvi], 1-512, i-xxvii pp. 23cm x 17cm

Andegavi / Angera: Caroli Mame, 1826. A very nice copy of this large Psalter / Brevary created for the use of churches in the Diocese of Angers. Complete. Full title is: "Psalterium despositum Per Hebdomadam juxta ritum Breviarii Andegavensis recens recogniti, una cum officiis B. Mariae Virginis et defunctorum: nec non psalmis et canticis, quibusdam festis solemnioribus propriis: illustrissimi et reverendissimi in Christo Partris D.D. Caroli Montault, episcopi Andegavensis Auctoritate, ac venerabilis capituli consensu editum". Extra large format for public speaking. With music an vignette illustrations. Full leather binding with gilt titles and decoration to the spine. There is rubbing to the boards and a split to the surface layer of the spine affecting the label. Binding is very slightly shaken with cracking to the paper on the front end paper. There rest of the work is generally in good, clean condition. There are a few places where there is weakness to the binding and some soiling / edgewear to a few page edges. There is a tear with corner loss to page 235 / 236. There is also a large closed tear to page 151/152 without loss. See photos. Heavy laid paper with large text. A beautiful edition. 46cm x 30cm.

La reliure est très légèrement secouée et le papier de la première page de garde est craquelé. Le reste de l'ouvrage est généralement en bon état et propre. Il y a quelques endroits où la reliure est affaiblie et quelques salissures / usures sur les bords des pages. Il y a une déchirure avec perte d'un coin à la page 235 / 236. Il y a également une grande déchirure fermée à la page 151/152 sans perte. Voir les photos. Papier épais et grand texte. Une belle édition. 46cm x 30cm.

London: John Lee, 1843. A pamphlet (once bound in with other pamphlets). Complete. Title page, Introduction, text. The pamphlet now appears disbound, as it has been removed from a collection - but is complete in itself. A touch of darkening to the covers, and a small stain to the bottom of pages 4/5 but otherwise in good clean condition. Now held in an archival wallet. 24 pp. A scarce item, Copac shows holdings only at BL, Oxford & Cambridge. William Joseph Irons (1812-1883) was an Anglican priest and Theolgian. He was a strong defender of Church of England as the Established Church, and argued against seceding from the church (whether to Rome or to the more Protestant churches). He was the vicar of Brompton at the time of the publication of this work, and the introduction is dated Brompton April 1843. He is names by Lawrence Crumb (in "The Oxford Movement and its leaders, a bibliography of Secondary and Lesser Primary Sources") as the probable author of this work.

Amsterdam: Martinus van den Enden, 1700. A very nice copy of this engraving by Schelte Adamsz Bolswert (the sculptor and engraver) after the original by Rubens. Published by van Enden. Held under passe partout. To the verso is the taxation stamp for the department of the Interior for Calvados. Havard art museum states only that this is a Seventeenth Century engraving, and cites catalogues Hollstein 172; LeBlanc 13; Andresen 5. We suspect that this is later engraving as it lacks the engraver and artist details. Also, the image is reversed, so that the Madonna and child are admiring a fountain to the right, rather than the left. A very nice clean copy, with a good impression. Held in an archival film bag under a large passe partout. Engraving is 22cm x 18cm. The Passe Partout is 50cm x 40cm. There is a little marking to the front of the art board, to the reverse / back sheet, there is quite a bit of marking (But this would be hidden on display). A scarce item, we can find no copies outside of institutions, and none at all of this "reversed image".

Nous soupçonnons qu'il s'agit d'une gravure plus tardive, car il n'y a pas de détails sur le graveur et l'artiste. De plus, l'image est inversée, de sorte que la Madone et l'enfant admirent une fontaine à droite plutôt qu'à gauche. Un très bel exemplaire propre, avec une bonne impression. Conservé dans une pochette de film d'archivage sous un grand passe partout. La gravure mesure 22 cm x 18 cm. Le Passe Partout mesure 50cm x 40cm. Il y a une petite marque au recto du carton d'art, au verso de la feuille, il y a pas mal de marques (mais cela serait caché lors de l'exposition). Il s'agit d'une pièce rare, nous n'avons trouvé aucune copie en dehors des institutions, et aucune de cette "image inversée".
