To the title page is an attractive armorial stamp in blue ink, from Rigi Kaltbad, a commune in Switzerland. The pages themselves are in excellent, clean and tidy condition. Printed signature to the first plate. There was also a special edition of 600 copies on larger paper using the woodblocks cut by Schiestl himself. 225 by 270mm (8¾ by 10¾ inches)

Lozuet was clearly a compassionate woman, who anonymously gave away all of the income she inherited in good works. Half black leather binding, with black marbled boards. Gilt title to spine. A little rubbing to the edge of the boards. Marbled end papers. Sepia photograph of Mademoiselle Lozuet and tissue guard, followed by the two essays. Good clean copy, with just a few light foxing spots. There is a slight bowing to the boards, but not major. 12 pages. 260 by 165mm (10¼ by 6½ inches).

Half leather binding with gilt decoration and titles to the spine. Marbled boards. A touch of bumping / handling only. Marbled end papers. Internally mainly clean and tidy, with a little marking / darkening to the pages. French and Latin facing pages help with the translation / reading of the text. Originally published in 1827, this was abridged from a longer Latin primer by Lhomond. Overall an attractive copy of this reprint. Charles François Lhomond (1727–1794) was a French priest, grammarian, and educator who was a native of Chaulnes, Somme. [iv], 182. pp. 140 by 90mm (5½ by 3½ inches).

Paris: Bouasse Lebel, 1839. First edition. A nice copy of this lithograph depicting 44 of the female religious orders. Hand coloured illustration, with notes on each below. A rare lithograph in this large format. The Museé d'Art Religieux dates the original of this to between 1714 and 1719. This hand coloured lithograph is #16 in a series for the Encyclopédie Bouasse Lebel - other lithographs from this series were produced in 1839. There was also a matching lithograph showing the male religious orders. Our copy is pasted onto a stiff mounting board (and has been mounted at some point) so it is a good, strong copy, without edgewear. A little darkening to the sheet only. A couple of the black habits have a touch of surface loss (easy not to notice) it looks as if the paint has been pressed against the glass frame at some point and left some behind. The design shows us the representatives of the monastic orders dressed in their particular costume, full-length, head-on, in front of a grotto and convent behind. Although the costumes are exact, there are variations depending on the convent. Sheet is 52 cm X 66 cm (20½ by 26 inches). picture area 31 cm x 61 cm.

Cette lithographie coloriée à la main est la 16e d'une série pour l'Encyclopédie Bouasse Lebel - d'autres lithographies de cette série ont été produites en 1839. Il y avait également une lithographie correspondante montrant les ordres religieux masculins. Notre exemplaire est collé sur un carton de montage rigide (et a été monté à un moment donné) ; il s'agit donc d'un bon exemplaire, solide, sans usure des bords. Un petit assombrissement sur la feuille seulement. Quelques habitudes noires présentent une légère perte de surface (facile à ne pas remarquer), comme si la peinture avait été pressée contre le cadre en verre à un moment donné et avait laissé des traces. Le dessin nous montre les représentants des ordres monastiques vêtus de leur costume particulier, en pied, de face, devant une grotte et un couvent à l'arrière. Bien que les costumes soient exacts, il y a des variations selon les couvents. La feuille mesure 52 cm x 66 cm (20½ x 26 pouces). La surface de l'image est de 31 cm x 61 cm.

Comprises: Commentary volume on the facsimile of the first typographical edition by an unknown Strasbourg printer, c. 1480 - with contributions by Karin Boveland, Christoph Peter Burger, Ruth Steffen; and second book: Facsimile of the first typographic edition. Books in fine condition, slipcase has some soiling to the cream colour of the laid on cover illustrations. 305 x 210 mm (12 x 8¼ inches).

London: R. W. for Henry Mortlock: 1673. Contemporary full leather, strengthened at some point. Recent burgundy label with gilt titles. The book has no end papers, and begins with the imprimatur pasted down to the front board. The final page is pasted to the rear board. The work begins with the title page. The book is in three parts. There is a lengthy "General preface", followed by the Contents, and "An examination of the pamphlet entituled Dr. Stillingfleet against Dr Stilllingfleet". The third part is "An answer to the book entitled, Dr Stillingfleet's Principles Considered". [LXXXVI], 1-12, 13-73,[i], 75-291. pp

The original boards are a little rubbed and bumped, but still holding well. The spine has been strengthened and although the leather appears cracked, it is holding well. The label is bright. Inside, the binding is quite cracked to the front hinge, but still secure. A contemporary hand has practiced it's writing of "imprimatur" to the inside board. The rest of the book is in good clean condition, with only moderate darkening. A tiny amount of edge wear to the title page, but nothing significant.

This work was the culmination of an attack on Catholicism which began with the Discourse in 1671. Edward Meredith and the recusant Catholic Thomas Godden replied on the Catholic side, and here he continues his attack. His attack is wide ranging, from objecting to the Pope's decrees and the Council of Trent, through to accusing Ignatius Loyola of fanaticism. Edward Stillingfleet (1635-1699) was an Anglican theologian from Cranborne in Dorset. He was known as "The beauty of Holiness" for his good looks. He preached at St Margaret's, Westminster, on the day after the Great Fire in 1666. He was a leader amongst the "Latitudinarians" a group of young Anglicans, named pejoratively as "men of latitude" for the ease in which they switched side from the Parliamentary to the Royalist position after the Restoration. He was predominantly low church, and wanted reconciliation with Presbyterians - but certainly not with Catholics. Later he became the Bishop of Worcester (1689)

Geneva / Geneve: N/A, 1820. Undated, but likely from 1818-1822, this fine watercolour of Mary in the style of Raphaël, although unsigned has a contemporary paper attribution / provenance lightly tipped to it. This states that it was painted by Schenker and came from a collection. It was given by Ferdinand Dupon (?) as a souvenir of his two little brothers. Edged in gilt, the painting is in very good condition, with just a couple of tiny marks to it. 110 by 80mm (4¼ by 3¼ inches).

Schenker (1760-1848) was primarily an engraver, born in Geneva, worked Paris. Pupil of Saint-Ours and Macret, he studied intaglio printing. Worked for Bartolozzi in England and France. Director of the 'Ecole de gravure de Genève' (1817-1822). He engraved with Gâtine the illustrations for the series 'Le Bon Genre' published by La Mésangère. He was also clearly a skilled water colourist.

Amsterdam: Isaak Tirion en Jacobus Loveringh, 1740. First edition. [Bound with], Verklaring van Mozes vierde boek, genoemd Numeri. Top the rear is a fine map of the journey of the Israelites from Egypt to Canaan by Isaak Tirion. Two volumes bound as one. White leather (doesn't seem to be vellum) embossed design to the front and rear board. titles inked to the spine. small ex libris stamped to the front end paper. The texts are in good clean condition with just a touch of darkening to the paper. Both volumes are First Editions. Commentary on these two books of the Bible. Each has a half title, and a title page printed in red and black with a vignette illustration. There is also an attractive engraving to the first text page of each volume. A touch of edgewear to the top of the first title. Johann van den Honert was an 18th century Dutch theologian who was one of the most important Protestant reformers in the Netherlands. Honert was a supporter of orthodox Calvinism LXVI, 342, [8], 390 + map 260 x 210 mm (10¼ x 8¼ inches).

Beide delen hebben een halve titel en een titelpagina gedrukt in rood en zwart met een vignet illustratie. Er is ook een aantrekkelijke gravure op de eerste tekstpagina van elk deel. Een klein beetje slijtage aan de bovenkant van de eerste titel. Johann van den Honert was een 18e eeuwse Nederlandse theoloog die een van de belangrijkste protestantse hervormers in Nederland was.
