The text block is in good condition, with a little darkening / toning to the pages. Thomas Tully (1620–1676) was an Anglican clergyman. He held a preferment at Ripon. London: Robert white for Francis Tyon: 1667. Full leather. Second edition. Restored to spine. Blind stamped spine, with recent gilt titles to burgundy label. Bookplates of former owners to front flyleaf and paste down. (One being the Zion Research Library). The Parable of the Pilgrim was one of Bishop Patrick's most interesting works - constructed on similar lines to 'Pilgrim's Progress' The boards are clean and strong, but slightly bumped. Internally in good, but slightly bumped condition. Some staining to initial pages. A3 has loss to the bottom edge (not affecting text). J. H. Shorthouse, whose bookplate and signature both appear in this book, was an English novelist (1834-1903), influenced by Ruskin and Pre-Raphaelitism, author of the influential 'John Inglesant' among other works. he was also a a prolific 'book plater.' His bookplate appears in numerous bookseller's catalogues.

PATRICK, SIMON (Symon) (1626–1707) was Bishop of Ely. Prior to that, he had been Rector of St Pauls, Covent Garden, and won the admiration of his parishioner's for remaining there during the plague years. He was a polemicist, whose chief works were protecting the Church of England against Papists. [16], 184, 183-214, 217-527, [1] pp Text continuous despite pagination. Conforms to ESTC R23052

Angers: Pierre Avril & Jean le Bovllenger, 1658. First edition. Full calf with 7 raised panels to spine. Gilt and titles to spine and board edges. Marbled end papers. Armorial crest of an unknown Bishop to the inside board. The binding has private locator numbers on paper to the spine. A little rubbing / bumping to the edges and corners of the boards. Internally a beautiful copy. Clean and tidy printing. The last few pages have a light water stain to one corner. Bonichon (died 1662) was a French Oratorian monk. Between 1656 and 1658, Bonichon wrote three tracts on the subject of the authority of Bishops in the ecclesiastical hierarchy (over the authority of clergy). A hot topic in France at the time apparently! The hierarchy stood with Bonichon against the clergy. [xxviii], 776, [2] pp. 250 x 170 mm (9¾ x 6¾ inches). Première édition. Entre 1656 et 1658, Bonichon écrivit trois tracts au sujet de l'autorité des évêques dans la hiérarchie ecclésiastique (sur l'autorité du clergé). Un sujet brûlant en France à l'époque apparemment ! Wilkes Barre, PA: The Collins Press, 1940. Cream stapled paper covers with red titles and decoration (with an engraving of Christ Crucified). Publisher's details to the rear cover. Each of the stations has a verse and response, a description, and short thought. There is no imprimatur and the cover states that the work is only to be used for private devotion. The booklet is beautifully clean, inside and out, with no significant marks. COPAC cites this work as another edition of Social Justice and the Stations of the Cross, and gives the publication date as 1940. 16 pages. 145 x 90 mm (5¾ x 3½ inches).

London: Jonah Bowyer, 1710. Contemporary full leather. Speckled calf, with attractive blind stamped design to the front and rear board. 20th C. owner's bookplate to the front paste down. early owner's signature to the front end paper. Half title, contents to the rear. The author outlines a moderate vindication for the Church of England priesthood. Sections on avoiding the perils of Popery, Presbyterianism and Islam (or the "Mahometan impostures" as he calls them). The book opens with the sentiment. "An infidel in the Church, may very aptly be compared to a Monkey in a Glass-Shop" The boards are still clean and attractive. There is a little bumping to the edges, but not too much. The spine is a little rubbed, and there is no gilt to the titles so they are very faintly embossed. Internally the book is clean and tidy with just a little darkening to the page edges. William Hume (1651-1714) was the Vicar of Tavistock and Milton Abbot in Devon from 1696-1714. His son (John Hume) became Bishop of Bristol, Oxford, and Salisbury. xxiii, [i], 410, [6]. pp.

London: L. B. Seeley and Son, 1825. Original diced Russian calf with gilt decoration to spine. Bookplate to the inside board. Contemporary gift inscription to the end paper. There is an engraved vignette to the title page. After the treatise on Prayer, there is around 70 pages with examples of prayers for the faithful to use, and an index.

Edward Bickersteth (1786-1850) was an evangelical Church of England clergyman. He was active in promoting the Evangelical Alliance and was strongly opposed to the Tractarian movement. His son became the Bishop of Exeter.

There is rubbing to the edges of the boards, with a little bumping to the corners. The gilt to the spine has been rubbed and the titles are no longer legible. It appears that the book may have been repaired in the distant past (unsure) the end papers look a little newer. The binding is strong and secure. Internally clean and tidy throughout with just a little darkening. Overall a sound copy.

The vellum is clean and tidy, with a little foxing / marking only. A large, uncut copy. Lower corner of leaf D4 torn away, with loss of a few words from six lines of text. Paper flaw to leaves H-H2, with loss of a single word to recto and verso of each.ESTC T75521. 64p pages.
Samuel Wesley (1663-1735), Anglican clergyman and poet. Public outcry to the criticism of dissenting education in his 'Letter from a Country Divine' to his friend in London concerning the education of dissenters in their private academies (London, 1702) led Wesley to respond voraciously, firstly with this work, and then again in A Reply to Mr. Palmer's Vindication (1707).

Erdington, Warwickshire: St Mary's College, Oscott, 1885. First edition. A very nice copy of this Roman Catholic magazine. Blue cloth boards, with gilt titles and design. Comprising three issues of the magazine. 13 (misnumbered 12), 14 (June 1885), 15 (November 1885) with three photographic plates (portraits). The reprint / offprint contains two articles - one on "The Oscott Lodges" the other contains two poems by Peter Mowle (an Elizabethan Catholic) and a commentary.

The book is in sound condition. The blue cloth is a little faded and slightly rubbed. There is a touch of bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, the book is clean and tidy, with a little foxing only. Contemporary owner's gift inscription to the inside front board with a library sticker from the South Brent Syon Monastery.
St Mary's College (or Oscott as it is often know) is a seminary training Roman Catholic Clergy. It opened in 1794, and in 1805 ordained Francis Martyn - the first Roman Catholic priest wholly ordained in England since the Reformation. Since this time, it has been under the authority of the Archdiocese of Birmingham. the Chapel at Oscott was created by the eminent Catholic architect Augustus Welby Pugin, who also created the museum and altar (from 1837 he lived partly at Oscott). The college played an important part in the Catholic revival of the mid 19th Century.

London: Religious Tract Society. First edition. No date to this publication, but COPAC suggests circa 1825. Hardback. Thin leather spine, with number 100 in gilt to the spine. (This copy from Santon Sunday School Library, presumably their numbering). Inside, it lacks front end paper. Overall clean and tidy. The boards have a touch of rubbing to the edges, but no marking. The inside front board has slight loss to the paper - presumably where labels have been removed., The front end paper has been removed. School library sticker to the inside front board, and recent owner's name. The rest of the book is clean and tidy, with a touch of darkening only. 144 pages.

The Reverend Fletcher was a contemporary of Wesley, and one of Methodism's first great theologians. He was a French Huguenot, (his actual name was Jean Guillaume de la Fléchère.) and came to England in 1740. He spent most of his career as curate of the Parish of Madeley. Although a key Methodist, he always remained loyal to the Church of England.

London: Seeley, Jackson & Halliday, 1867. A first edition of this scarce work. Dark brown cloth. Contemporary brown end papers and owner's contemporary gift inscription to the FFEP. A quite reasonable copy. The brown cloth has marking to the corner of the front board, and there is some light fading from water spots to the rear board. The spine has darkened so that the title is illegible (no gilt, if ever any, remains). Internally clean and tidy throughout, with a touch of darkening to the pages only. Samuel, Garratt 1817-1907 was also the author of "Signs of the Times" and "World Without End" amongst other works. He was an Evangelist within the Church of England.
