    One early purchaser of the first two parts was Samuel Pepys. Whilst Pepys acknowledged that the book was the "greatest fashion" he could not see why it was deemed so witty. Hudibras was reprinted many times in the centuries following Butler's death.

The spine has gone, and the front and rear boards are detached from the text block. The title page and first gather are also detached. The leather boards have been held onto the book by tape at some point, and the outlines of this can be seen to the boards. Moderate foxing throughout.
