Paris: Editions Excelsior, 1934. First Edition. Original soft covers, with a dedication by Icart to the half title "To Mr Ullmann, who lived among the stars, this play is where they and wings are spoken of." The cover shows Don Quichotte waving to aeroplanes' wings, emblems of dread and aspiration alike. Although the Spanish civil war was still two years away, the image is very evocative of a squadron of bombers on their way to Guernica. Louis Icart's sole book, where the artist recasts Cervantes's Don Quixote as a dramatic play. In the climactic fifth act, the revived knight-errant mounts a crusade across France against modernity's vices: the gaudy worship of the Golden Calf, the idolatry of Mammon, and the dominion of the mean-spirited and base. The covers are in good condition, with a touch of edge wear, and a little creasing to the spine. Rubbing to the spine edges. Internally clean and tidy, with some darkening to the pages. Some pages uncut. 252 pages. 19cm x 13.5cm. Louis Icart (1888–1950) was primarily known as a French Art Deco painter, printmaker, and illustrator renowned for his glamorous etchings of elegant women.

    D. Joaquin Maria de Ferrer, Imp. by Julio Didot Mayor, 1832. A lovely copy of this miniature edition. Contemporary brown leather Simier of Paris signed Cathedral Binding, with profuse gilt decoration and armourial crest to the boards. Gilt design, titles and windmill to the spines. This binding is identical to one part of the British Library Charles Ramsden Collection of Signed Bindings. (See BL Shelfmark c150k11) A little rubbing to the bindings, with slight loss of gilt, but overall, in excellent condition. The hinges have been professionally restored at some point, in a way that is barely noticeable. Marbled end papers. Illustrated with 11 plates engraved by E Stalker (including Frontis) and a folding hand coloured map. Complete. Half title to each volume, and an engraved title on glossy paper, and a second engraved title. Vol. 1 has a frontispiece portrait of Cervantes, (portrait of Cervantes engraved by E. Stalker after José del Castillo's design). and 5 engraved plates. It ends with the beautiful miniature hand coloured map, showing Don Quixote's travels. Volume 2 offers 5 engraved plates. Inside, the books are in very good condition, but with a little darkening and moderate foxing to the pages. Still a very nice copy. This was the second edition of Don Quijote by Ferrer. The first was in one volume, this edition allowed better line spacing, and two extra plates. Originally issued in paper wrappers, this luxurious binding adds greatly to the attractiveness of this work. Nb. Many sources quote STAKKER as the engraver, but a close look at the engravings shows that it is E. Stalker. Christie's commented in a recent auction that Ferrer was a great admirer of Cervantes and paid 30,000 francs in order to produce the first edition in miniature which includes his dedication to Cervantes after the title page. Collation: XX, 352, [ii], Map., XII, 378 pages. 125 x 80 mm (5 x 3¼ inches). Palau, 25059; Rius, 89; Suñé, 96; Quixotes collector's manual, no. 41.1

Collation : XX, 352, [ii], carte, XII, 378 pages. 125 x 80 mm (5 x 3¼ inches). Palau, 25059 ; Rius, 89 ; Suñé, 96 ; Manuel du collectionneur de Quixotes, no. 41.1

Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 905297377. 210 by 115mm (8¼ by 4½ inches).

Condition: The binding is in slightly rubbed condition. A little bumping to the corners. Cracking to the front hinge. The title label is largely lost. Still holding well and an attractive binding. The front end paper is somewhat weak. The rear end paper has a small hole, and a red ink stain to it. There is also an ink inscription in Latin stating that the book was given to the owner by his good friend Coenraad van Beuningen. (1622-1693). He was the Dutch Republic's most experienced diplomat, burgomaster of Amsterdam, and from 1681 a Dutch East India Company director. He probably was bipolar, becoming unstable after the loss of his fortune in 1688. The pages of the work itself are overall in good, clean condition. There is a touch of darkening, and some small old repairs to the pages. There are a few closed tears and a couple of areas of small loss. None of these issues affect text or plates. One page has annotations which add verses from Virgil and Juvenal.

A scarce work by Otto Van Veen depicting moral scenes, memento mori, teachings on nature and the destiny of man. plates were cut by C. Boel, C. Galle and P. de Jode. Otto van Veen, also known by his Latinized names Otto Venius or Octavius Vaenius (1556-1629), was a painter, draughtsman, and humanist active primarily in Antwerp and Brussels in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He is known for his paintings of religious and mythological scenes, allegories and portraits, He also designed several emblem books, and was for several years the teacher of Rubens. His role as a classically educated humanist artist (a pictor doctus), was influential on the young Rubens, who would take on that role himself. (Wikipedia).

[xvi], 207, [ix]. pages. 103 planches gravées (complètes). Conforme à WorldCat / OCLC: 9052973779. 210 by 115mm.

(Wikipedia).

Quite a few pages are uncut. 23.5cm x 21cm. Unpaginated. Saint-John Perse was the pseudonym of Alexis Leger (1887–1975), a French poet, writer, and diplomat who stands as one of the most significant literary figures of the 20th century. Perse was dismissed from his post by the Vichy government in 1940, stripped of his French nationality, and forced into exile in the United States. After producing some early work, he then focussed on his diplomatic career. This was his first work on his return to poetry. Perse's work was admired by literary contemporaries such as Paul Claudel, André Gide, and André Breton, who viewed him as a "surrealist at a distance." Particularly interesting for the English reader, is the relationship Perse had with T.S. Eliot.

All edges gilt. 162, (ii). pages. 32.5cm x 26.5cm. Born in Marseille in 1851 and active until his death in 1916, Auguste Vimar was a versatile artist who excelled as painter, sculptor, and illustrator. He earned acclaim for his vigorous, narrative illustrations, which fused naturalism with the sinuous lines and ornamental elegance of Art Nouveau, frequently featuring animals and spirited scenes.
