There are certainly good margins, and the Worldcat listings seem to suggest a book of 17cm. Ours is 21cm. So this is probably correct. Engraved title page with the bust of Horace by Lairesse. Title page in red and black with a woodcut vignette. Dedication leaves in Latin. Forward (In Dutch) by Antoni Jansen van TerGoss. The emblems themselves all on the recto pages, with Dutch text beneath and Latin, German and French facing each engraving. [xvi], 207, [ix]. pages. 103 engraved plates (complete). Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 905297377. 210 by 115mm (8¼ by 4½ inches).

Condition: The binding is in slightly rubbed condition. A little bumping to the corners. Cracking to the front hinge. The title label is largely lost. Still holding well and an attractive binding. The front end paper is somewhat weak. The rear end paper has a small hole, and a red ink stain to it. There is also an ink inscription in latin stating that the book was given to the owner by his good friend Coenraad van Beuningen. (1622-1693). He was the Dutch Republic's most experienced diplomat, burgomaster of Amsterdam, and from 1681 a Dutch East India Company director. He probably was bipolar, becoming unstable after the loss of his fortune in 1688. The pages of the work itself are overall in good, clean condition. There is a touch of darkening, and some small old repairs to the pages. There are a few closed tears and a couple of areas of small loss. None of these issues affect text or plates. One page has annotations which add verses from Virgil and Juvenal.

A scarce work by Otto Van Veen depicting moral scenes, memento mori, teachings on nature and the destiny of man. plates were cut by C. Boel, C. Galle and P. de Jode. Otto van Veen, also known by his Latinized names Otto Venius or Octavius Vaenius (1556-1629), was a painter, draughtsman, and humanist active primarily in Antwerp and Brussels in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He is known for his paintings of religious and mythological scenes, allegories and portraits, He also designed several emblem books, and was for several years the teacher of Rubens. His role as a classically educated humanist artist (a pictor doctus), was influential on the young Rubens, who would take on that role himself. (Wikipedia).

[xvi], 207, [ix]. pages. 103 planches gravées (complètes). Conforme à WorldCat / OCLC: 9052973779. 210 by 115mm.

(Wikipedia).

Here, FirstSearch states that this edition was edited by the mathematician Henry Briggs. Full leather binding, probably original boards, with a later leather spine and label with gilt decoration. Binding is in good, clean condition, with minimal bumping and wear. Slight splitting to the spine hinge. The end papers are from an earlier (16th Century) Latin work. Unusual to see pages used as end papers in this way. The binding has been made without inside covering to the boards. The front board holds the bookplate of Sir Lucius O'Brien Bart* Also has ownership marks of Gilbert Clark, Johannis Clenche (1691) and Edmund Clampin (?). Apart from the ownership marks, this work is mainly clean and tidy. There is a light damp mark to the top edge, but a very faint one. The work is written in two columns, with the Greek and Latin side by side. Despite the title, this work includes books 1-6 of Euclid's elements. Geometrical woodcut engravings throughout. A very nice clean copy. [2]-250-[2] pp. 285 by 185mm (11¼ by 7¼ inches). Henry Briggs was an English mathematician, whose main contribution was the simplification of logarithms and the algorithm for long division (which is still used). In 1619 he was appointed Savilian Professor of Geometry at the University of Oxford, and produced this work in 1620. Irrelevant, but still interesting, is that he was the originator of the erroneous notion of California as an Island, which he expounded in a tract on the Northwest Passage printed in 1622, with a map showing the island, and oft re-printed after. *Sir Lucius O'Brien. (1731-1795). Irish baronet, Greek and Latin scholar, Member of Parliament and privy councillor.

London: Chapman & Hall, 1843. Third Edition in Original Cloth. Printed in the same month as the first edition. This copy bears all of the issue points of the first issue- with the exception of the title page, which clearly states 3rd Edition. It is likely that this was bound up from 1st issue sheets, when the demand for more copies was realised. Please see photographs from Walter E. Smith for the issue points. To highlight one example - ps 42 line 17. The W in Was is printed in Italic. Smith states that this was corrected in the second edition - but it still appears here as an italic. In particular - all of the changes that Smith states occured between the 1st and 3rd editions and in this copy, in the 1st state (see pic of table 1). Original brown buckram / cloth with blind stamped decoration to boards, and gilt titles to spine and front board. The cloth is somewhat darkened,There is a little splitting to the spine and a chip to the top edge of the spine (1cm) this has been re-glued in place, but is still obvious. Blue font on the half-title and red and blue font for the title. Stated third edition in red text to title page. Date MDCCCXLIII to bottom of title. The title is a little darkened and marked. Four hand-coloured steel-engraved plates by and after Leech and four black and white text wood-engravings by W.J. Linton after Leech. As Smith comments "The expense of the hand coloured illustrations reduced profits considerably, and Dickens, who was the actual publisher of the Carol, never again used colour in any of his books" (V.2 p 21). vi, 166, [ii]. pp Adverts for Dickens other works to rear. Pages are darkened to the edges and with some marks to them. Binding is a little shaken but still holding together. Dickens' most beloved Christmas story of Ebenezer Scrooge's redemption after being visited by three spirits on Christmas Eve. Scrooge is made to see the dangers and consequences of his miserly ways and awakens the following morning infused with the spirit of Christmas giving. "A tale to make the reader laugh and cry - to open his hands, and open his heart to charity even toward the uncharitable... a dainty dish to set before a King" (Contemporary review in London's Athenaeum magazine). 165 by 105mm (6½ by 4¼ inches).

Illustrated with 11 plates engraved by E Stalker (including Frontis) and a folding hand coloured map. Complete. Half title to each volume, and an engraved title on glossy paper, and a second engraved title. Vol. 1 has a frontispiece portrait of Cervantes, (portrait of Cervantes engraved by E. Stalker after José del Castillo's design). and 5 engraved plates. It ends with the beautiful miniature hand coloured map, showing Don Quixote's travels. Volume 2 offers 5 engraved plates. Inside, the books are in very good condition, but with a little darkening and moderate foxing to the pages. Still a very nice copy. This was the second edition of Don Quijote by Ferrer. The first was in one volume, this edition allowed better line spacing, and two extra plates. Originally issued in paper wrappers, this luxurious binding adds greatly to the attractiveness of this work. Nb. Many sources quote STAKKER as the engraver, but a close look at the engravings shows that it is E. Stalker. Christie's commented in a recent auction that Ferrer was a great admirer of Cervantes and paid 30,000 francs in order to produce the first edition in miniature which includes his dedication to Cervantes after the title page. Collation: XX, 352, [ii], Map., XII, 378 pages. 125 x 80 mm (5 x 3¼ inches). Palau, 25059; Rius, 89; Suñé, 96; Quixotes collector's manual, no. 41.1
