These are published as part of "The Literary Miscellany: or Extracts and Selections Classical and Scientific." Each has an engraved title page, and an engraving on the final page. White hardback (paper covered boards). Leather label to spine with gilt title "Poems 1" which implies a second unknown collection. The white boards are a little marked and darkened, but still presentable. Internally slightly darkened, but overall in very good condition. To each of the items, is a penciled number on the title, presumably giving a publication number (?) The advert to the rear of the book indicates that around 100 such pamphlets were produced (or intended). Text in English. London: Chapman & Hall, 1843. Third Edition in Original Cloth. Printed in the same month as the first edition. This copy bears all of the issue points of the first issue- with the exception of the title page, which clearly states 3rd Edition. It is likely that this was bound up from 1st issue sheets, when the demand for more copies was realised. Please see photographs from Walter E. Smith for the issue points. To highlight one example - ps 42 line 17. The W in Was is printed in Italic. Smith states that this was corrected in the second edition - but it still appears here as an italic. In particular - all of the changes that Smith states occured between the 1st and 3rd editions and in this copy, in the 1st state (see pic of table 1). Original brown buckram / cloth with blind stamped decoration to boards, and gilt titles to spine and front board. The cloth is somewhat darkened,There is a little splitting to the spine and a chip to the top edge of the spine (1cm) this has been re-glued in place, but is still obvious. Blue font on the half-title and red and blue font for the title. Stated third edition in red text to title page. Date MDCCCXLIII to bottom of title. The title is a little darkened and marked. Four hand-coloured steel-engraved plates by and after Leech and four black and white text wood-engravings by W.J. Linton after Leech. As Smith comments "The expense of the hand coloured illustrations reduced profits considerably, and Dickens, who was the actual publisher of the Carol, never again used colour in any of his books" (V.2 p 21). vi, 166, [ii]. pp Adverts for Dickens other works to rear. Pages are darkened to the edges and with some marks to them. Binding is a little shaken but still holding together. Dickens' most beloved Christmas story of Ebenezer Scrooge's redemption after being visited by three spirits on Christmas Eve. Scrooge is made to see the dangers and consequences of his miserly ways and awakens the following morning infused with the spirit of Christmas giving. "A tale to make the reader laugh and cry - to open his hands, and open his heart to charity even toward the uncharitable... a dainty dish to set before a King" (Contemporary review in London's Athenaeum magazine). 165 by 105mm (6½ by 4¼ inches).

Comme l'explique Smith, "le coût des illustrations colorées à la main a considérablement réduit les bénéfices, et Dickens, qui était l'éditeur du Carol, n'a plus jamais utilisé la couleur dans aucun de ses livres" (V.2 p 21). vi, 166, [ii]. pp Des publicités pour d'autres œuvres de Dickens figurent au dos de l'ouvrage. Les pages sont noircies sur les bords et portent quelques marques. La reliure est un peu secouée mais tient toujours. East Aurora NY: The Roycroft Shop, 1902. First Roycroft Press edition, signed limited issue, number 4 of 100 copies. Signed by Elbert Hubbard (Founder of the Roycroft Artisan Community) to the limitation page. A beautiful limited edition on Japanese vellum. Book is three quarter bound in fine blue leather, with a gilt foliate design and titles to the spine. Cream boards. A touch of rubbing to the edges of the spine only. Very presentable. There is the bookplate of Isaac H. Blanchard to the inside front board. Blanchard was the owner of Blanchard Press in New York. He was also well known as a philanthropist, and supporter of workers, having written the first Collective Bargaining Contract in the city, and for his support of Apprentices. Engraved portrait of Dickens as a frontis, with tissue guard. Decorated title page matching the foliate design on the spine. The typography of the book is lovely, with head- and tailpieces by Samuel Warner. Hubbard had travelled to England and met William Morris in 1892. On his return, he founded the Roycroft community, which promoted the Arts and Crafts style and techniques. [vi], 142 pages. 230 by 160mm (9 by 6¼ inches).

London: F. & C. Rivington, J. Walker, et al, 1810. Full leather bindings with burgundy and black labels to spine. Gilt titles and decoration. The labels are rubbed and chipped to the edges. Front board to volume two is cracked to the hinge, but still holding in place. Handled but attractive. Frontis portrait to volume one. (clean and tidy) The title page tp volume one is a little darkened with a corner mark, otherwise the text block is in excellent condition. Volume two is still in very good condition, but with a few foxing spots. A little worm damage to the last few pages of volume 2. with slight impact upon text. Unpaginated quarto edition. Also enclosed are a copy of Canon John Willis's address to the Johnson Society "Dr Johnson and his English Dictionary" 1948 24pp. And an advertising postcard from Scolar Press for a facsimile of the Journey to the Western Isles. 280 x 220 mm (11 x 8¾ inches).

London: Burns & Oates, 1911. A very nice copy of this First edition. Soggarth (derived from sagart), is an Irish word for a Priest. The blue cloth is clean and tidy, with no marking. The gilt is clean and bright. There is just a touch of bumping to the edges of the cloth. Internally clean and tidy, with a little darkening / foxing to the page edges. Bookplate from Syon Abbey in Chudleigh. Original blue cloth, with gilt titles. Rough cut pages. xii, 95, [v] pp.
Matthew Russell (1834-1912), was an Irish Roman Catholic priest, and Jesuit. He was the author of several books and collections of poetry - and was the founder and editor of "Catholic Ireland" Which became the literary journal "Irish Monthly" this "discovered" several prominent Irish authors, including Oscar Wilde.

London: Printed for Henry Herringman, and sold by Jacob Tonson, 1688. Later marbled hardback boards, with buckram spine. No titles. Boards are a little rubbed but sound. Contains reprints of Three of Dryden's poems. All three poems have separate title pages (all dated 1688).
A example of Dryden's publisher's issuance of volumes made up from various separate printings of his poems. (according to Worldcat). Probably missing A¹ (Blank end paper). So our copy begins with the Title page. Binding falls open to the title page (although secure). Pages are slightly darkened, and have minor flaws to the edges. Overall a decent copy of a scarce collection of works (No copies of any of the poems printed before 1800 are available at the time of listing). No rear end paper, so book ends with page 116. The printing of the title page of the Panegyrick is particularly dark, and has bled through to the verso.

Despite the poem's name (Annus Mirabilis), 1666 had been one of great tragedy, including the Great Fire of London and the Plague. Perhaps the title was suggesting that things could have been worse ! The poem was written at Charlton in Wiltshire, where Dryden was sheltering from the Plague.

London: Faber & Faber, 1965. A good + copy of this first edition in a Good + wrapper. Wrapper (now in mylar protection sleeve) has a little nicking to the head and tail of the spine. 3 cm closed tear to the top of the rear panel, and with creasing to the edge of this. A little marking to the rear panel, and darkening to the spine. Still an attractive copy. Boards are in clean condition, with a touch of bumping to the bottom edge. Slight fading to the bottom edge, particularly to the rear board. See pictures for wrapper and book. Internally very nice, fractionally darkened pages. To the inside board is an owner's signature for David S. Miall. dated April 17th. 1965. Then aged 18, he later became professor of English at the University of Alberta. 86 pages. 220 by 140mm (8¾ by 5½ inches).

La couverture (maintenant dans une pochette de protection en mylar) présente quelques entailles à la tête et à la queue de la colonne vertébrale. Une déchirure fermée de 3 cm en haut du panneau arrière, avec des plis sur le bord de celui-ci. Un peu de marquage sur le panneau arrière et un assombrissement du dos. Il s'agit néanmoins d'un bel exemplaire. Les planches sont en bon état, avec un petit choc sur le bord inférieur. Légère décoloration sur le bord inférieur, en particulier sur le panneau arrière.
