Internally some light foxing. Pages in a good state, no tears or creases. XXXII pages of text, followed by [31] Sheets of plates: b/w illustrations, fold out maps, and plans. Complete. Barbie du Bocage refers to Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage (1760–1825), a notable French geographer and cartographer. He was a student of the famous geographer Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville and worked extensively in Paris. Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage held important roles including as attaché to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later in the Cabinet of Medals at the King's Library. He contributed to geographic and cartographic knowledge during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, creating maps such as those for the "Voyage du jeune Anacharsis." He also served under Napoleon's administration and was a member of the Institut de France. 26cm x 21cm. Conforms to the third edition referenced in WorldCat / OCLC: 8182752.

Il fut l'élève du célèbre géographe Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville et travailla longuement à Paris. Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage a occupé des fonctions importantes, notamment celle d'attaché au ministère des Affaires étrangères, puis au Cabinet des médailles de la Bibliothèque du Roi. Il a contribué aux connaissances géographiques et cartographiques à la fin du XVIIIe et au début du XIXe siècle, en créant des cartes telles que celles du « Voyage du jeune Anacharsis ». London: Bowles & Rivington: 1724. A glazed and framed hand coloured map of South Wales. As well as the map, there are architectural details to the left side of the map. To the right are two fossils. Framed in light and dark green mounting board, and a green and gilt wooden frame. Overall in very clean and tidy condition. The original map fold is visible to the centre but is very light. There is a small repaired tear to the top right inch of the map - not affecting any detail. 200 x 320 mm (7¾ x 12½ inches).
Moll was a cartographer who moved to England in 1678 and opened a book and map store in London. He produced a variety of maps, most of which asserted British sovereignty over Empire and the New World.

1895. A lovely album, containing 74 large original photographs from five trips. These are Berlin 1895, French Alps and Nancy in 1896, Trier in 1897, Interlaken and the Swiss Alps in 1898 and the Tirol in 1899.

The photographs were purchased from prominent commercial photographers of the time. The French photographs are largely from ND Phot, the Swiss from Schroeder & Cie of Zurich and Edition Photoglob.

The majority of the prints are either albumen or early silver gelatin prints. As the early silver gelatin were so similar to albumen it is difficult to tell. There are a number of colourised prints. Most of the prints are quite large, with quite a few as large as 210 mm x 275 mm.
Most are printed one to a page, but a couple of the smaller prints are printed two to a page. One of the images is a double / folding photograph. Album size 27cm x 36cm Un bel album, contenant 74 grandes photographies originales de cinq voyages. Il s'agit de Berlin 1895, des Alpes françaises et de Nancy en 1896, de Trèves en 1897, d'Interlaken et des Alpes suisses en 1898 et du Tyrol en 1899.

La majorité des épreuves sont soit à l'albumine, soit à des épreuves gélatino-argentiques anciennes. Comme la première gélatine d'argent était si semblable à l'albumine, il est difficile de le dire. Il existe un certain nombre d'imprimés colorisés. La plupart des tirages sont assez grands, avec un bon nombre aussi grand que 21 cm x 27,5 cm

The boards and spine are a little faded and rubbed, but substantially sound. No titles inside. The work is a leporello, with 25 hand coloured plates of peasants in regional costume. Each is labelled below. The first few plates have light foxing to them, the rest are clean and bright. An attractive piece of Breton illustration. 16cm x 11cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 6967049. This states four library holdings, all in America.

Brest: 1875. First Edition. A lovely leporello of hand coloured lithographs produced by Emile Mage. Original decorated cloth boards with cloth spine. Boards are somewhat rubbed and faded, but overall in sound condition. Publisher's advert to the inside board, but no publication details. 15 pages containing 30 views of Brittany (to one side only). Very nice colouring. A touch of marking to the first page, otherwise very clean. We can find no examples of this publication on OCLC or online. Emile Mage was primarily an artistic photographer, but he also dabbled in objets d'Art, Breton costumes, and - it would seem - lithographed views. 175 x 115 mm (7 x 4½ inches). Première édition. Un joli leporello de lithographies coloriées à la main produite par Emile Mage. Planches en tissu décorées d'origine avec dos en tissu. Les planches sont un peu frottées et décolorées, mais dans l'ensemble en bon état. Complete with 4 folding maps (England, Scotland, Ireland, India)& folding plan of Gibraltar by J.-D. Barbier de Bocage, 3 views incl. Fingal's Cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa, Giant's Causeway located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland and Gibraltar, the 2 portraits engr. by A.J. Hulk of William Pitt (after William Owen) and Charles Fox (after K.A. Heckel), a folding plate "Combat de boxers à Odiham" and 14 folded tables. The information and tables show the concerns of the Commune in Paris - how much the monarchy costs England, the number of prisoners etc. Text is entirely in French.

Paris: L'Auteur, 1777. First edition. A very nice example of this tableau of france. It was originally published in two parts with the intention of giving a comparative size of towns compared to Paris. We offer the general map (there was also a city plan sheet). Backed onto deep blue linen, and held in a card slipcase with manuscript title. Engraved by P. Croisey. The map is set within an ornamental frame. The title appears at the top left in an ornamental cartouche bearing the King's coat of arms, decorated with a symbolic composition representing military power and trade. At the bottom left: Observations. Overall the map is in excellent condition, with 24 panels laid down onto linen. Two of the panels have pale blue staining from the backing linen. (this is lighter than the photographs would suggest, and is to the left of the panel / observations, so not over the map proper). Otherwise in clean, tidy original condition. The marbled paper over card slipcase is a little rubbed and cracked to the edges. Overall a very nice example of a rare map. 970 by 950mm (38¼ by 37½ inches). We can find no copies for sale at the time of cataloguing, and the only library holding is the BnF. FRBNF406140600000000. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 494749651. (This for both sheets). Duchemin (1730–1811) was not a professional cartographer by trade but an engineer of the Ponts et Chaussées. He became ingénieur en chef in 1777, and later rose to Inspector General before retiring in 1802.

Il a été initialement publié en deux parties dans le but de donner une idée comparative de la taille des villes par rapport à Paris. Nous proposons ici la carte générale (il existait également une feuille représentant le plan de la ville). Montée sur du lin bleu foncé, elle est conservée dans un étui en carton portant un titre manuscrit. Gravée par P. Croisey. La carte est enchâssée dans un cadre ornemental. Le titre figure en haut à gauche, dans un cartouche ornemental arborant les armoiries du roi, décoré d'une composition symbolique représentant la puissance militaire et le commerce. En bas à gauche : « Observations ». Dans l'ensemble, la carte est en excellent état, avec 24 panneaux montés sur toile. Deux des panneaux présentent des taches bleu pâle provenant de la toile de support. (Celles-ci sont plus claires que ne le laissent supposer les photographies, et se trouvent à gauche du panneau / des « Observations », donc pas sur la carte proprement dite). Pour le reste, elle est dans son état d'origine, propre et soigné. Le papier marbré recouvrant l'étui en carton est un peu frotté et fissuré sur les bords. Dans l'ensemble, un très bel exemplaire d'une carte rare. 970 × 950 mm (38¼ × 37½ pouces). Nous n'avons trouvé aucun exemplaire en vente au moment du catalogage, et le seul exemplaire conservé en bibliothèque se trouve à la BnF. FRBNF406140600000000. Conforme à WorldCat / OCLC : 494749651. London: R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 1815. First edition. A beautiful copy of this battle chart / map of the Battle of Waterloo. Created by Lt Tyler, and published on August 1st 1815, only 43 days after the battle itself. For the British public, this was the first chance they had to see the scene of the famous victory. In excellent condition, with barely any edgewear. A touch of darkening only, but the hand coloured illustration is still clean and bright. The only example currently available (at the time of cataloguing), and one of the finest examples still in existence. It depicts the area of Belgium from Brussels south to the Sambre River, and shows the French, Prussian and Anglo-Allied armies that fought in this area on the 15th–18th June 1815. Veterans of Napoleon's European campaigns flocked to his banner after his escape from Elba in early 1815. By contrast, many of Wellington's most experienced soldiers were on the other side of the Atlantic. The armies met at Waterloo, 'a near run thing'. This rare broadsheet map was made by an officer who was probably not actually on the field with the army, as he was with the 2nd Garrison Battalion, which was posted in England, and rushed into print soon afterwards. The news sheet map was the 19th century equivalent of a television news bulletin 470 by 295mm (18½ by 11½ inches). Blank to verso.

. Première édition. Un magnifique exemplaire de cette carte de la bataille de Waterloo. Réalisée par le lieutenant Tyler et publiée le 1er août 1815, soit seulement 43 jours après la bataille. Pour le public britannique, ce fut la première occasion de découvrir le théâtre de cette célèbre victoire. En excellent état, avec des bords à peine usés. On note seulement un léger assombrissement, mais l'illustration coloriée à la main reste nette et lumineuse. Il s'agit du seul exemplaire actuellement disponible (au moment du catalogage) et l'un des plus beaux exemplaires encore existants. Elle représente la région de Belgique s'étendant de Bruxelles vers le sud jusqu'à la Sambre, et montre les armées française, prussienne et anglo-alliée qui se sont affrontées dans cette zone du 15 au 18 juin 1815. Les vétérans des campagnes européennes de Napoléon se sont ralliés à sa bannière après son évasion d'Elbe au début de l'année 1815. En revanche, bon nombre des soldats les plus expérimentés de Wellington se trouvaient de l'autre côté de l'Atlantique. Les armées se sont affrontées à Waterloo, dans une bataille qui a failli basculer d'un côté comme de l'autre. Cette rare carte grand format a été réalisée par un officier qui n'était probablement pas sur le terrain avec l'armée, puisqu'il faisait partie du 2e bataillon de garnison, stationné en Angleterre, et a été imprimée à la hâte peu après. La carte-journal était l'équivalent au XIXe siècle d'un bulletin d'information télévisé. 470 x 295 mm (18½ x 11½ pouces). Verso vierge.

London: Bradbury and Evans, 1854. First edition. Bound in dark navy cloth with gilt pictorial and title to front board, blind rule to both boards. Designed and fully illustrated in 80 leaves of amusing b/w cartoons depicting caricatures, with captions, on a mid-19th Century Grand Tour of the Continent. Doyle's work frequently appeared, amongst other places, in Punch magazine. Neat repair to spine. Boards lightly bumped at corners. Back board at page edge has wear. New endpapers. One or two spots and some small repairs to edges of preliminary pages. A good copy. 310 x 240 mm (12¼ x 9½ inches). Full leather hardback. Raised bands to spine. Parallel text in English and French. Front board a little loose at base but still holding firm. Leather shows signs of handling. Internally, the pages are age toned, but clean. One gather feels a little loose at the base - presumably due to front board being slightly loose. Overall a good and rare item. vii, table, 227, [1] pages. 175 x 115 mm (7 x 4½ inches).

Pote was an Eton school housemaster and bookseller. "Jos[eph] Pote of Eton, a man of great renown, / Buys a book for sixpence, and sells it for a crown" (from ODNB).

Emanuele Lupi, C1875. First edition. An original photograph of Genoa, Italy, showing Porto Antico and the harbour with La Lanterna area in the distance, taken from an elevated west-side vantage. Circa 1875. A double sheet photograph, that has a crease to the centre where folded. A little darkening and creasing to the edges and slight fading to the left side. Studio stamp of emanuele Lupi to the verso. 21.5cm x 49cm.

Amsterdam: Hondius, Jodocus, 1610. A hand coloured composite map of Anglesey, the Isle of Wight, and the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey. Circa 1610. Latin text to the verso "Anglia". This is from the Hondius printing. Double glazed and framed in a black and gilt frame. The two pages of Latin text are visible through the rear glazed panel. Very nice condition. There is a touch of darkening to the page, but very light. The crease to the centre of the page has been reinforced to the verso. The text pages are also clean and tidy. Signed in the plate ' Per Gerardum Mercatorem Cum Privilegio ' prior to his death in 1594. Hondius took over the plates from Mercator's grandson, and re-published his Atlas. 320 x 420 mm (12½ by 16½ inches).
Gerard Mercator was one of the greatest map makers ever known. He started his career as a professional instrument maker after finishing a masters degree at Louvain University and studying advanced mathematics. By the 1560's he was developing a new form of navigational projection. Rumold Mercator was his son.

London: R. Ackermann, 1827. Four volumes. Hardback. Original blue paper covered boards (interim bindings), with yellow paper labels to spines. Boards a little stained and rubbed. Complete with all 81 colour engraved costume plates. Although the title pages state 84 plates, in fact the Errata and plate index show that the Chelsea Pensioner and the Greenwich Pensioner are on a single plate, elsewhere the Fisherwoman and the Dustman are on the same plate, and the plate of the Dr of Music is listed twice. So in fact there are 81 plates and the work is complete. Some light foxing to the margins. A little splitting to the binding of Volume 2. Overall a very nice copy.

Engraving is 9cm x 12cm on a sheet 20cm x 27.5cm. To the bottom of the sheet is written in in "To my dear cousin P. Monard... L Letrône." The page has moderate foxing. This sheet has been stuck to a backing sheet. Ludovic Letrône (1832-1889) was a French painter and draftsman. He is known for his landscape paintings, such as "Bords de la Nive (Basses-Pyrénées)" from 1874, and for his drawings and engravings, often related to architecture and sculpture. Letrône contributed illustrations to several publications, including works on the architecture and sculpture of the Hôtel Carnavalet and the Louvre, and he also produced drawings for books on art history and museum collections.

There has been some reinforcement to the spine and there is a shelf label*, but otherwise with only slight darkening. There is a frontis engraving to the two towers of the Cathedral, which is still a major landmark today. Two further engravings and a folding map. The engravings are in very good condition. The text pages are somewhat foxed, but still legible. Overall a decent copy. 18cm x 11.5cm. 330 pages illustrations, folded map. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 30929885. * label for the bibliothèque du fonds Bergevin to the top of the front cover. Taking its name from the two leading figures of the Bergevin family, Louis-Athanase Bergevin (1753-1832) and his son Louis-Catherine (1798-1876), were magistrates from Blois and major landowners in Saint-Gervais-la-Forêt. The collection was dispersed at auction in Véndome in 2022.

Les gravures sont en très bon état. Les pages de texte sont quelque peu rouillées, mais restent lisibles. It bears a close similarity to work that Perraudin painted of La Seine, port d'Issy. In very good, clean condition, with just a touch of darkening to the left edge. Image is 30cm x 40cm. The sheet is 50cm x 65cm. On heavy laid Arches paper. Perraudin, Paul (1907–1993) — Born at Moret-sur-Loing, Perraudin studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs, later joining its teaching staff in 1942 as professor. From 1959 he devoted himself chiefly to marine painting, travelling widely, exhibiting frequently, and illustrating a number of fine press editions, for which he received numerous distinctions. He died at Marseille in 1993, following a final exhibition.

À partir de 1959, il se consacre principalement à la peinture marine, voyage beaucoup, expose fréquemment et illustre plusieurs éditions de presse de qualité, pour lesquelles il reçoit de nombreuses distinctions. Il meurt à Marseille en 1993, après une dernière exposition.
