Original dark green buckram with a little rubbing to the covers and edges. Brown label to the spine of each volume with titles in gilt. Complete with 52 aquatint plates, two maps and aquatint titles. The binding to the front of Volume I is a touched cracked (but holding). In Volume II an early gather (with the list of plates and first plate) are detached but present. Pages a little darkened and with some foxing, but still a very attractive copy. Some water damage to bottom edge of plates and text of Volume I.

Barbie du Bocage refers to Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage (1760–1825), a notable French geographer and cartographer. He was a student of the famous geographer Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville and worked extensively in Paris. Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage held important roles including as attaché to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later in the Cabinet of Medals at the King's Library. He contributed to geographic and cartographic knowledge during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, creating maps such as those for the "Voyage du jeune Anacharsis." He also served under Napoleon's administration and was a member of the Institut de France. 26cm x 21cm. Conforms to the third edition referenced in WorldCat / OCLC: 8182752.

Barbie du Bocage fait référence à Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage (1760-1825), géographe et cartographe français de renom. Il fut l'élève du célèbre géographe Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville et travailla longuement à Paris. Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage a occupé des fonctions importantes, notamment celle d'attaché au ministère des Affaires étrangères, puis au Cabinet des médailles de la Bibliothèque du Roi. Il a contribué aux connaissances géographiques et cartographiques à la fin du XVIIIe et au début du XIXe siècle, en créant des cartes telles que celles du « Voyage du jeune Anacharsis ». London: Bowles & Rivington: 1724. A glazed and framed hand coloured map of South Wales. As well as the map, there are architectural details to the left side of the map. To the right are two fossils. Framed in light and dark green mounting board, and a green and gilt wooden frame. Overall in very clean and tidy condition. The original map fold is visible to the centre but is very light. There is a small repaired tear to the top right inch of the map - not affecting any detail. 200 x 320 mm (7¾ x 12½ inches).
Moll was a cartographer who moved to England in 1678 and opened a book and map store in London. He produced a variety of maps, most of which asserted British sovereignty over Empire and the New World.

1895. A lovely album, containing 74 large original photographs from five trips. These are Berlin 1895, French Alps and Nancy in 1896, Trier in 1897, Interlaken and the Swiss Alps in 1898 and the Tirol in 1899.

The photographs were purchased from prominent commercial photographers of the time. The French photographs are largely from ND Phot, the Swiss from Schroeder & Cie of Zurich and Edition Photoglob.

The majority of the prints are either albumen or early silver gelatin prints. As the early silver gelatin were so similar to albumen it is difficult to tell. There are a number of colourised prints. Most of the prints are quite large, with quite a few as large as 210 mm x 275 mm.
Most are printed one to a page, but a couple of the smaller prints are printed two to a page. One of the images is a double / folding photograph. Album size 27cm x 36cm Un bel album, contenant 74 grandes photographies originales de cinq voyages. Il s'agit de Berlin 1895, des Alpes françaises et de Nancy en 1896, de Trèves en 1897, d'Interlaken et des Alpes suisses en 1898 et du Tyrol en 1899.

La majorité des épreuves sont soit à l'albumine, soit à des épreuves gélatino-argentiques anciennes. Comme la première gélatine d'argent était si semblable à l'albumine, il est difficile de le dire. Il existe un certain nombre d'imprimés colorisés. La plupart des tirages sont assez grands, avec un bon nombre aussi grand que 21 cm x 27,5 cm

The boards and spine are a little faded and rubbed, but substantially sound. No titles inside. The work is a leporello, with 25 hand coloured plates of peasants in regional costume. Each is labelled below. The first few plates have light foxing to them, the rest are clean and bright. An attractive piece of Breton illustration. 16cm x 11cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 6967049. This states four library holdings, all in America.

Brest: 1875. First Edition. A lovely leporello of hand coloured lithographs produced by Emile Mage. Original decorated cloth boards with cloth spine. Boards are somewhat rubbed and faded, but overall in sound condition. Publisher's advert to the inside board, but no publication details. 15 pages containing 30 views of Brittany (to one side only). Very nice colouring. A touch of marking to the first page, otherwise very clean. We can find no examples of this publication on OCLC or online. Emile Mage was primarily an artistic photographer, but he also dabbled in objets d'Art, Breton costumes, and - it would seem - lithographed views. 175 x 115 mm (7 x 4½ inches). Première édition. Un joli leporello de lithographies coloriées à la main produite par Emile Mage. Planches en tissu décorées d'origine avec dos en tissu. Les planches sont un peu frottées et décolorées, mais dans l'ensemble en bon état. First edition, where the author is anonymous, but the preface is signed Baert. 4 volumes. in-8vo, Contemporary half calf, mottled paper covers, corners bumped and the gilt titles and decoration are significantly rubbed. Complete with 4 folding maps (England, Scotland, Ireland, India)& folding plan of Gibraltar by J.-D. Barbier de Bocage, 3 views incl. Fingal's Cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa, Giant's Causeway located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland and Gibraltar, the 2 portraits engr. by A.J. Hulk of William Pitt (after William Owen) and Charles Fox (after K.A. Heckel), a folding plate "Combat de boxers à Odiham" and 14 folded tables. The information and tables show the concerns of the Commune in Paris - how much the monarchy costs England, the number of prisoners etc. Text is entirely in French.

Designed and fully illustrated in 80 leaves of amusing b/w cartoons depicting caricatures, with captions, on a mid-19th Century Grand Tour of the Continent. Doyle's work frequently appeared, amongst other places, in Punch magazine. Neat repair to spine. Boards lightly bumped at corners. Back board at page edge has wear. New endpapers. One or two spots and some small repairs to edges of preliminary pages. A good copy. 310 x 240 mm (12¼ x 9½ inches). Reliure en tissu marine foncé avec titre et pictogramme dorés sur le premier plat, règle aveugle sur les deux plats. Internally, the pages are age toned, but clean. One gather feels a little loose at the base - presumably due to front board being slightly loose. Pote was an Eton school housemaster and bookseller. "Jos[eph] Pote of Eton, a man of great renown, / Buys a book for sixpence, and sells it for a crown" (from ODNB).

Emanuele Lupi, C1875. First edition. An original photograph of Genoa, Italy, showing Porto Antico and the harbour with La Lanterna area in the distance, taken from an elevated west-side vantage. Circa 1875. A double sheet photograph, that has a crease to the centre where folded. A little darkening and creasing to the edges and slight fading to the left side. Studio stamp of emanuele Lupi to the verso. 21.5cm x 49cm.

Amsterdam: Hondius, Jodocus, 1610. A hand coloured composite map of Anglesey, the Isle of Wight, and the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey. Circa 1610. Latin text to the verso "Anglia". This is from the Hondius printing. Double glazed and framed in a black and gilt frame. The two pages of Latin text are visible through the rear glazed panel. Very nice condition. There is a touch of darkening to the page, but very light. The crease to the centre of the page has been reinforced to the verso. The text pages are also clean and tidy. Signed in the plate ' Per Gerardum Mercatorem Cum Privilegio ' prior to his death in 1594. Hondius took over the plates from Mercator's grandson, and re-published his Atlas. 320 x 420 mm (12½ by 16½ inches).
Gerard Mercator was one of the greatest map makers ever known. He started his career as a professional instrument maker after finishing a masters degree at Louvain University and studying advanced mathematics. By the 1560's he was developing a new form of navigational projection. Rumold Mercator was his son.

London: R. Ackermann, 1827. Four volumes. Hardback. Original blue paper covered boards (interim bindings), with yellow paper labels to spines. Boards a little stained and rubbed. Complete with all 81 colour engraved costume plates. Although the title pages state 84 plates, in fact the Errata and plate index show that the Chelsea Pensioner and the Greenwich Pensioner are on a single plate, elsewhere the Fisherwoman and the Dustman are on the same plate, and the plate of the Dr of Music is listed twice. So in fact there are 81 plates and the work is complete. Some light foxing to the margins. A little splitting to the binding of Volume 2. Overall a very nice copy.

S.P: S.P, C1880. First edition. An attractive engraving by L. Letrône showing ancient Basque tombstones. The engraving is a clear impression, with the title hand written below by the artist. Engraving is 9cm x 12cm on a sheet 20cm x 27.5cm. To the bottom of the sheet is written in in "To my dear cousin P. Monard... L Letrône." The page has moderate foxing. This sheet has been stuck to a backing sheet. Ludovic Letrône (1832-1889) was a French painter and draftsman. He is known for his landscape paintings, such as "Bords de la Nive (Basses-Pyrénées)" from 1874, and for his drawings and engravings, often related to architecture and sculpture. Letrône contributed illustrations to several publications, including works on the architecture and sculpture of the Hôtel Carnavalet and the Louvre, and he also produced drawings for books on art history and museum collections.

Ce feuillet a été collé sur une feuille de support. Ludovic Letrône (1832-1889) était un peintre et dessinateur français. Il est connu pour ses peintures de paysages, comme "Bords de la Nive (Basses-Pyrénées)" de 1874, et pour ses dessins et gravures, souvent liés à l'architecture et à la sculpture. Letrône a illustré plusieurs publications, notamment des ouvrages sur l'architecture et la sculpture de l'hôtel Carnavalet et du Louvre, et a également réalisé des dessins pour des livres sur l'histoire de l'art et les collections de musées.

S.P: S.P, C1958. First edition. Attractive lithograph #14/99 signed in pencil to the bottom right. The lithograph shows steam boats in a harbour. It bears a close similarity to work that Perraudin painted of La Seine, port d'Issy. In very good, clean condition, with just a touch of darkening to the left edge. Image is 30cm x 40cm. The sheet is 50cm x 65cm. On heavy laid Arches paper. Perraudin, Paul (1907–1993) — Born at Moret-sur-Loing, Perraudin studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs, later joining its teaching staff in 1942 as professor. From 1959 he devoted himself chiefly to marine painting, travelling widely, exhibiting frequently, and illustrating a number of fine press editions, for which he received numerous distinctions. He died at Marseille in 1993, following a final exhibition.

Perraudin, Paul (1907-1993) — Né à Moret-sur-Loing, Perraudin a étudié à l'École des Arts Décoratifs, avant de rejoindre son corps enseignant en 1942 en tant que professeur. À partir de 1959, il se consacre principalement à la peinture marine, voyage beaucoup, expose fréquemment et illustre plusieurs éditions de presse de qualité, pour lesquelles il reçoit de nombreuses distinctions. Il meurt à Marseille en 1993, après une dernière exposition.
