John Greenleaf Whittier (1807–1892) was an American Quaker poet, abolitionist, and major figure among the so-called fireside poets of the 19th century. Whittier played a central role in the American anti-slavery movement, advocating for abolition both through poetry and direct action — including service as a delegate to anti-slavery conventions and a term in the Massachusetts legislature. He published important anti-slavery tracts such as Justice and Expediency and was known for his involvement in abolitionist publications like the Pennsylvania Freeman.

John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) était un poète quaker américain, un abolitionniste et une figure majeure des "poètes du coin du feu" du XIXe siècle.
