Internally clean and tidy, with just a touch of marking / darkening and a little edgewear. Attractive vignette to the first page of the novel. Publisher's vignette to the title. Contents and privilége du Roi to the rear. The work begins with the half title, so it is likely that a blank end paper is lacking. The advertisement to the author (who was anonymous at the time), states that she was sixteen when she wrote the book, although she concedes that it later underwent editing. The publisher writes in the preface, acknowledging that it was written by a woman, that "One senses from the style of this work that it is a woman writing for people of her kind." And also "she speaks to the heart to win over the mind." The story is a collection of moral instructions. "It is a History of Piety, adorned with ingenious emblems, allegorical figures, poetic descriptions..." A scarce work in eighteenth century editions. This edition is interesting, as it was published at exactly the time that the French Revolution was beginning, and was the first of a number of anti-enlightenment works written by Loquet. X, 453, [2] pages.

Piringer, 1815. A lovely framed engraving of Orleans from the l'ille Arrault. Painted by Salmon in 1807, this was engraved by Piringer in 1815. In very good original uncoloured state. It is framed, under glass in a recent gilt and green mottled frame. The engraving is in good condition, with a little darkening to the plate. This is an unusual darkening, and looks as if it may be an intentional colour wash ? There appears to be a small (possibly) repaired tear to the bottom edge of the image. As it is on a line with the engraving it is barely noticeable (but see photos). Overall a very attractive and scarce view of Orleans. 55cm x 72cm. Jacques Pierre…

As it is on a line with the engraving it is barely noticeable (but see photos). Overall a very attractive and scarce view of Orleans. 55cm x 72cm. Jacques Pierre François Salmon (1781-1855) was a history painter and a landscaper, he was the student of Jean Bardin and Jean-Baptiste Regnault and was a drawing teacher at the Orléans high school. The Orléans Museum preserves some of his works.

The Neurdein company was the largest French publisher of postcards of the time. By the turn of the century, they were being funded by the French government to produce images and postcards of Algeria in order to promote colonial tourism and stimulate private investment.
