London: J. Pitt, C. 1800. C 1800. First edition. A small chapbook. Yellow paper covers, containing 12 songs and three woodcuts. In good condition. It is a rough and ready, disposable item. The yellow title has been printed off centre, and the pages jut out a little. Slight edgewear to the pages, but overall in good, clean condition. Some pages uncut. 16 pages. This collection compiles popular songs performed at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and other public venues during a period when music and song were integral to both theatrical and social life in London. Drury Lane, under the management of figures like David Garrick (1747–1776), was a major centre for theatrical music, including comic opera, interludes, and songs woven into plays and performances. J. Pitts (John Pitts) was a prominent London street ballad printer active from approximately 1765 to 1844. He operated in the Seven Dials district, a well-known center for popular and cheap print production in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Pitts specialized in printing broadsides—single sheets featuring ballads, songs, and topical verses—intended for mass public consumption. 10cm x 7cm. Contemporary signature to blank end paper. title, contents and essays. This large paper edition, with wide margins, and 400 pages, is much scarcer than the contemporaneous ordinary edition, with [12], 312 pages. The boards are in very good, clean condition. A touch of bumping. Inside, the book is in good, clean, if slightly darkened condition. 400 pp.

Addison published the 'Freeholder' in fifty five papers, from 23 December 1715, to 9 June 1716 - a political 'Spectator,' in defense of orthodox Whig principles imperiled by the rebellion in Scotland. (DNB) Two essays are devoted to the Tory Fox Hunter (22 & 47) and one "On the late Act of Parliament for suspending the Habeus Corpus Act." (essay 16).

The Illustrated London News, 1876. A bound collection of issues of The Illustrated London Almanack. This was published annually by The Illustrated London News from 1845 to 1895. The full title states that this "contains astronomical diagrams of remarkable phenomena, printed in tints, under the superintendence of James Breen. Ferns and Butterflies of the months, printed in colours by Leighton Brothers with descriptive letterpress by Mrs Lankester, fine art engravings, original designs heading the calendar and a variety of useful information." The illustrations show the Victorian obsession with the rural idyll.

Half brown leather, with gilt decoration and titles. Brown buckram boards. Boards are a little faded and rubbed, but still attractive. Marbled end papers. Internally in good, if slightly darkened condition.
Pagination is: 1865, 58 pages; 1866, 54 pages; All volumes from 1867 to 1874 have 56 pages in each; 1875, 48 pages, 1876, 48 pages. Each year is complete - apart from 1876, which has five of the six colour plates called for. 1866 has 4 colour plates (but it does not state how many it should have). There are a total of 69 full colour chromolithographs, and the rest b/w. Subjects include court circulars, information about government expenditure, Army & Navy movements, notable deaths and happenings in London &c. 280 mm x 210 mm (11 x 8¼ inches).

London: St Alban Press, 1975. A decent copy of this first edition, outlining the tenets of the Liberal Catholic Church. The Liberal Catholics are a breakaway from the Roman tradition, which hold to Catholic sacramental practices but are more liberal in their theology, and in particular are more open to Theosophy. They are independent groups but tend to be in communion with the Episcopalian churches. Clean blue boards. with white titles. Glossy clean pages inside. Slight bowing to the top board. Has label for the Liberal Catholic Church of Bournemouth to the front end paper. xxii, 227 pages. 21cm x 14cm.

Internally in sound condition, with moderate darkening to the pages only. There is foxing to the frontis portrait. The portrait is a portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, but the final page of volume three has an errata, stating that in fact, it was by Dance R.A. Large folding map of India is in good, slightly darkened condition. There have been archival repairs to a couple of closed tears. Neatly done. The print is reasonably clean, but has a light damp stain across the background, and light foxing. A little nicking and edgewear to the edges of the card, including a 7cm tear to the card (now repaired with archival tape). Issued as #9 of "Political sketches" - Issued in 5 volumes. London: Hulton Press, 1953. First edition. A peep-show / tunnel book, illustrating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey in 1953. It was published by the photo magazine Picture Post. The covers are slightly darkened, and have a little chipping to one corner. The spine of the booklet has has some wear, and has been reinforced with archival tape. The peep-show itself is in good, clean condition without marks inside. The outside white covers are a little darkened. A nice copy. This peep-show offers dual views, presenting two distinct scenes from Her Majesty's coronation. Viewed through the Imperial State Crown—via an aperture in the Black Prince's Ruby—it depicts the crowning moment. From the opposite side, an opening in the cover, depicting Westminster Abbey's west front with the Palace of Westminster beyond, reveals the procession advancing down the nave with the newly crowned Queen. The booklet is 32 pages long. The peep-show was produced by the photographer Edwin Smith (1912-1971) and the accompanying text by his wife, writer and artist Olive Cook (1912-2002). 20.5cm x 18.5cm. When opened, the concertina is approximately 60cm.

Vu à travers la couronne impériale, via une ouverture dans le rubis du Prince Noir, il représente le moment du couronnement. De l'autre côté, une ouverture dans la couverture, représentant la façade ouest de l'abbaye de Westminster avec le palais de Westminster au-delà, révèle le cortège avançant dans la nef avec la reine nouvellement couronnée. Le livret compte 32 pages. Le peep-show a été réalisé par le photographe Edwin Smith (1912-1971) et le texte qui l'accompagne par sa femme, l'écrivaine et artiste Olive Cook (1912-2002). 20,5 cm x 18,5 cm. London: Mary Vint, 1810. First Edition. Say's Sunday Reporter was a weekly newspaper published from 1799 until at least 1810. By this issue, it was published by Mary Vint - formerly Mary Say of London. The newspaper includes summaries of military news from the London Gazette, other London news. There was also an account of the capture of Guadaloupe from the London Gazette Extraordinary of March 15th. (this is a lengthy account of two full pages). The Sunday news, included an account of a flag of Truce being delivered from General Buonaparté of France. News of European conflicts was also summarised. News of fires in London, movement of ships etc. An account of Parliamentary Intelligence give summaries of proceedings in the House of Lords and the House of Commons. This includes and account of the conduct of ministers. There is also an account of a mutiny in India (which had happened in September 1809). The paper ends with lists of officers to be cour martialled, and lists of deaths and marriages. And of course, an advert for Doctor Harvery's anti venereal pills! A fascinating summary of life in England in 1810. 8 pages. Clean and tidy, with just a tiny amount of nicking to the page edges, and a couple of light foxing spots. Small tax paid stamp to the front cover - not affecting text. In excellent condition for age. Mary Vint / Say is a fascinating character. She married the publisher Charles Green Say, who produced three regular newspapers. When he died in 1775 she continued to publish alone. She later remarried becoming Mary Vint, but continued as a female newspaper proprietor! She was prosecuted for libel several times and in 1781 sentenced to six months in prison for libelling the Russian ambassador. Following libels of William Pitt in 1788, there were debates in parliament and she was prosecuted once more. Despite this, she continued publishing, eventually dying in 1832. 355 by 240mm (14 by 9½ inches).

Elle a été poursuivie plusieurs fois pour diffamation et, en 1781, condamnée à six mois de prison pour avoir diffamé l'ambassadeur de Russie. À la suite de diffamations de William Pitt en 1788, des débats ont eu lieu au parlement et elle a été à nouveau poursuivie. Malgré cela, elle continue à publier et meurt en 1832. 355 x 240 mm
