Porter). There is some browning and foxing throughout (heavier towards the end); the first and last leaf are detached, the rest of the pamphlet loosely bound together. 19, [i] pp. 205 x 130 mm (8 x 5 inches).

Orations were given annually in Boston, often called "municipal Orations"; typically two or more addresses were given. The impetus for the tradition of municipal orations in Boston stemmed from an act passed at a town meeting in March 1783, when it was decided that the annual celebration of commemorating the Boston Massacre of March 5, 1770, be replaced with a yearly Independence Day celebration. The local newspaper reported following this oration:

"The Repertory tells us that Mr. Ritchie delivered an excellent Oration. So much the better for Mr. Ritchie! The Oration was doubtless federal, else it could not have been excellent, and it must have abused the President, else it could not have been federal, and it was delivered on the anniversary of independence, a fit federal occasion for abusing the government of our choice! " (American Mercury, 11 August 1808, 2)

Den Haag / ('s-Gravenhage): Jacob & Isaac Scheltus, 1783. First edition thus. 11 pp. With woodcut device on title page and one initial. An account of the preliminaries of a treaty between King George of England and the States General of the Netherlands. Text in French. The covers are clean, but internally, this is quite soiled - it seems from a damp atmosphere. This has "num. 32" printed to the title page, and would appear to come originally from a bound collection of Dutch treaties of the period. Pages have separated from their text block. Conforms to FirstSearch / OCLC:66918463. Only two library holdings (Rotterdam and Utrecht), and no copies for sale at the time of cataloguing.

London: R. Ackermann's Repository, 1808. Plate number 9 from Ackermann's "Microcosm of London". A lovely aquatint. First edition. Plate is 24cm x 29 cm. Mount size is 32.5cm by 38cm (12¾ by 15 inches). The architectural details were drawn by Pugin, and Rowlandson drew the figures (both are credited on the sheet). The aquatinting was done by J. Bluck. Very nice clean impression of this plate, with good colouring. A very small closed foxing spot to the bottom edge of the plate. Ackermann produced this work between 1807 and 1810. One of the greatest of the colour plate books. "The plates by Rowlandson and Pugin present an unrivaled picture of London in early 19th century, of historic value, as many of the buildings no longer exist." (Tooley)

Very small previous owner's name to top of front pastedown. Geoffrey Treasure was a popular history teacher and housemaster at Harrow School. He was the author of several books, mainly about France in the 16th and 17th centuries. 316 pages, including bibliography and index. 225 x 145 mm (8¾ x 5¾ inches).

Saumur: E. Roland. First Edition. An attractive programme for the 1908 Carrousel. The front and rear covers show designs by Grasser, The programme inside, show the name, rank etc of each cavalry officer taking part, and what they are doing during the Carrousel. 4 pages. 320 by 250mm (12½ by 9¾ inches). The covers are a little darkened and marked. small pinhole to one edge. Repaired split to the bottom 3-4 cm of the spine. Internally clean but slightly darkened. A nice piece of ephemeral military / equine history. The Cavalry school at Saumur was established in 1763 to train riders in the military. Legend has it that the Bishop of made the school move to Saumur to bring pain to the Protestant town (after the officers had been too friendly with the local ladies). The regular Carousel is one of the highlights of French Horse riding. The school still exists today, training officers of the tank regiments, and supporting the nearby Cadre Noir, France's elite horse riders.

Une belle pièce d'histoire militaire / équine éphémère. L'école de cavalerie de Saumur a été créée en 1763 pour former les cavaliers à l'armée. La légende veut que l'évêque de Saumur ait fait déménager l'école à Saumur pour faire souffrir la ville protestante (après que les officiers aient été trop amicaux avec les dames locales). Le carrousel régulier est l'un des points forts de l'équitation française. L'école existe toujours aujourd'hui, formant les officiers des régiments de chars et soutenant le Cadre Noir, l'élite des cavaliers français.

Paris: De Bure fréres, 1823. A scarce catalogue of the sale of Charles Chardin's library. First edition. Original pale blue paper covers. These are stained and nicked to the edges. The front and rear covers have become detached and repaired with archival tape at some point. Darkening to the front cover. The first gather is detached from the book block, but is present. The rest of the book is in good condition, with slightly brittle edges. This work was published in preparation for the sale of books commencing 9th February 1824. Auction catalogue with 2791 items catalogued. To the title page is written "l'envoi de Tilliard freres." The Tilliards were an eminent Parisian bookselling family. Established by Nicolas-Martin Tilliard by 1823 the brothers Nicolas-Noël-Henri and Jacques-François Tilliard advertised themselves as booksellers to the King of Prussia. Charles Chardin was an author and bookseller. He supplied books to William Beckford. Although he was often a radical publisher, and supported the revolution, Chardin was accused of being a British agent and arrested in 1794, but was acquitted. Collection sold 9 February-22 March 1824 (Hôtel Bullion, Paris). It is likely that Chardin died soon after. 21cm x 14cm. Xi, 268, 4. pages. Il fournit des livres à William Beckford. Bien qu'il ait souvent été un éditeur radical et qu'il ait soutenu la révolution, Chardin a été accusé d'être un agent britannique et arrêté en 1794, mais il a été acquitté. Winston Churchill, inserted to the front of the collection, and Roosevelt, which is tipped into the collection - over the top of the printed version of Roosevelt. Blue soft covers with a red title and vignette to the front cover. Tied with cord to left edge. Inside are 13 full page caricatures as follows: Winston Churchill, (This is an original sketch), American Harmonica player Larry Adler, violinist and composer Fritz Kreisler, English journalist Hannen Swaffer, English humorist and novelist A. P. A collection of sentences and maxims extracted from the work of the famous Arab author Imam Essiyouthi, with a literal translation opposite the Arabic text followed by another word-for-word translation and explanatory notes by François Gadoz. Probably a second issue of the first edition (title page states 1851 but the cover is dated 1852 and shows recently published items on the back cover). There were later printings retaining the 1851 imprint to the title page as late at 1888. This is one of the Algerian printings, as on the colophon, there is the signature of Bernard. Yellow paper covers. These are a little darkened / nicked to the edges, but still sound. Internally clean and tidy but with light to moderate foxing throughout. Abd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr al- Suyūṭī (1445-1505) was the author of many books, mostly religious books about the Islamic faith. 126 pages. 15cm x 9cm. Engraved title and engraved portrait of Hipocrates to the front of volume one. Full brown leather binding with simple gilt decoration and titles to the spine. Both volumes have a little rubbing to the spine, and with loss to the top surface leather on the spine (worse to volume 1 - see photographs). A few historiated initials and small vignettes throughout each volume. Dedication to the front of volume one. All edges gilt. Internally clean and tidy with a little darkening only. Text in Greek and Latin. Of particular interest in this copy is the ownership history. To the front of each volume is the paper ex libris of Syston Park, the celebrated library of Sir John Thorold. This library was largely dispersed by Sothebys in 1884 (although this copy does not appear to have been in that sale). The is also the small leather label of Huth Library "Ex Musaeo Huthii". This library was begun by Henry Huth (1815-1878) and continued by his son Alfred H. Huth. The Library was dispersed by Sotheby's in a number of sales between 1911 and 1920. Bound in full brown leather with gilt decoration and titles on spine. Both volumes show some rubbing to the spine and loss of the upper surface of the spine leather (worse for volume 1 - see photographs). A few historiated initials and small vignettes in each volume. Dedication at the beginning of the first volume. All edges gilt. The interior is clean and tidy, with only minor darkening. The ownership history of this copy is particularly interesting. At the beginning of each volume is the ex libris paper of Syston Park, the famous library of Sir John Thorold. This library was largely dispersed by Sothebys in 1884 (although this copy does not appear to have been part of that sale). There is also the small leather label of the Huth library "Ex Musaeo Huthii". This library was founded by Henry Huth (1815-1878) and continued by his son Alfred H. Huth. The library was dispersed by Sotheby's in several sales between 1911 and 1920. Finally, there is a John Burns ownership mark dating from 1920. München [Munich]: Braun & Schneider, 1887. A lovely collection of 60 of the history of costume sheets from the 1880s. Each are double page (bound in to hinges in the binding). The sheets each feature 4 couples of historical costume, hand coloured and numbered to each sheet. The sheets are clean, but with a little darkening to them. The whole is bound together as a prize binding from a Den Bosch "Nuttige en Beeldende Kunsten" (School of the visual arts) for 1887/8. This has deteriorated over the years, but has recently been restored, with a new spine and casing, the original front board has been laid onto the front board. Modern gilt titles to the spine. New end papers. The different artists of these sheets had great freedom in their design, the layout was predetermined in these cases. Usually a couple was depicted in typical fashion and costume without overlap. Hairstyle, jewellery and clothing were recreated in great detail by various artists by studying tombs, mosaics, frescoes and paintings. 350 by 225mm (13¾ by 8¾ inches).

Complete, with a title, a poem and 24 black and white plates. The portfolio is stained, with a water mark to the inside and out. Cloth ties still present. One of the three card folds inside is detached but present. The design is replicated on the paper covers inside. These are clean, but has a little loss to the spine edge. Plates are clean but with a little darkening and edgewear to the page edges. An uncommon item. Only two library holdings (BnF and the Netherlands Holocaust museum).
