Boston: Russell & Cutler, 1808. First edition. Pamphlet, disbound. Title with printer's vignette, "vote of the town", text. There is an owner's inscription on the title leaf. (Isaac Porter from Wm. Porter). There is some browning and foxing throughout (heavier towards the end); the first and last leaf are detached, the rest of the pamphlet loosely bound together. 19, [i] pp. 205 x 130 mm (8 x 5 inches).

Orations were given annually in Boston, often called "municipal Orations"; typically two or more addresses were given. The impetus for the tradition of municipal orations in Boston stemmed from an act passed at a town meeting in March 1783, when it was decided that the annual celebration of commemorating the Boston Massacre of March 5, 1770, be replaced with a yearly Independence Day celebration. The local newspaper reported following this oration:

"The Repertory tells us that Mr. Ritchie delivered an excellent Oration. So much the better for Mr. Ritchie! The Oration was doubtless federal, else it could not have been excellent, and it must have abused the President, else it could not have been federal, and it was delivered on the anniversary of independence, a fit federal occasion for abusing the government of our choice! " (American Mercury, 11 August 1808, 2)

Northern Netherlands: N/P. First edition. A scarce engraving by an unknown engraver from 1754. It shows the arrival of Daniël Raap in Hell. A caricature on the death of the merchant and Orangist Daniël Raap on 15 January 1754 in Amsterdam. Raap with his ally Teepken in hell standing before the Devil on his throne. Details in the image numbered 1-5 but there is no legend. tipped onto a paper sheet and held under passe partout. We cannot find any other copies of this for sale, and the only copy we can locate is in the Rijksmuseum (RP-P-OB-84.474) also with no legend. engraved area is 21cm x 31cm. Sheet is 25cm x 34cm. Passe partout is 35cm x 50cm. The sheet is a little darkened, and has a closed tear to one edge (not affecting engraved area). The title is added in Dutch in manuscript to the bottom right, and the number 114 to the bottom left. Small area of loss to the top edge of border, hidden by passe partout. A scarce item.

Daniel Raap (1703–1754) was a Dutch porcelain merchant from Amsterdam who played a significant role during the Orangist revolution in the Netherlands between 1747 and 1751. He was known for his agitation against the ruling Regent class, advocating for greater public influence in government and supporting the restoration of the stadtholderate under William IV, Prince of Orange. Raap, along with other activists, published pamphlets demanding democratic reforms and hereditary stadtholder rule. He organized petitions and called for the direct election of militia captains, the restoration of guild privileges, and auctioning of vacant public offices. His activities led to William IV intervening in Dutch politics, but when the new city government remained dominated by the traditional regent families, Raap found himself at odds with both more radical democrats and Orangists. By the time of his death, Raap's former popularity had turned to hostility; riots occurred at his funeral, and his coffin was even destroyed by a mob. Première édition. La surface gravée est de 21cm x 31cm. La feuille mesure 25 cm x 34 cm. Passe partout mesure 35 cm x 50 cm. La feuille est un peu assombrie et présente une déchirure fermée sur un bord (qui n'affecte pas la zone gravée). Le titre est ajouté en néerlandais dans le manuscrit en bas à droite, et le numéro 114 en bas à gauche. Petite zone de perte au bord supérieur de la bordure, cachée par un passe-partout. Une pièce rare.

Daniel Raap (1703-1754) était un marchand de porcelaine néerlandais d'Amsterdam qui a joué un rôle important pendant la révolution orangiste aux Pays-Bas entre 1747 et 1751. An account of the preliminaries of a treaty between King George of England and the States General of the Netherlands. Text in French. The covers are clean, but internally, this is quite soiled - it seems from a damp atmosphere. This has "num. 32" printed to the title page, and would appear to come originally from a bound collection of Dutch treaties of the period. Pages have separated from their text block. Conforms to FirstSearch / OCLC:66918463. Only two library holdings (Rotterdam and Utrecht), and no copies for sale at the time of cataloguing.

Original softcover, 256 pages with 60 black-and-white illustrations based on photographs on art paper. Red buckram and marbled boards with black leather label and gilt titles to spine. The binding is fractionally tight, but still perfectly readable. Original soft covers are bound in. Internally clean and tidy but slightly darkened. In fact there are 55 photographs, and 5 black and white illustrations, bringing the total to 60. 254. [vi]. pages. Nice copy. 19cm x 14cm

Orléans / Paris: C.A. Le Gall / Chez Langlois. First edition thus. The pocket calendar and information guide to Orléans for the year 1784. Although anonymous to the title, with only the publisher given (and providing the preface) this was in fact produced from 1763-1799 by various publishers. A fascinating snapshot of a major provincial French city, just five years before the revolution. Original hand panted soft patterned cover witha stitched binding. This paper cover gives the impression of flowers on wallpaper. There is an area of loss to the bottom edge (below the print), which has been replaced / repaired with archival tape. Some edgewear and creasing to the covers otherwise. Internally clean and tidy throughout. A little darkening / marking, but overall in excellent condition. The book aims to present the conditions of Orléans and its province in the year 1784. After the preliminaries, is a page per month of the year, giving astrological information and saints days. A few have been ruled through in ink - presumably either removed from the Catholic calendar, or dislikes by the almanac's owner. Then follow the church officials and officers, by name and title. These include the cathedral, and the parishes of the diocese. Details of hospitals in the area follow. There then follow much information on the commercial life of the region. For example, the page on Wine shows merchants and commissionaires. 240 pages. 12cm x 6.5cm.

Bien que le titre soit anonyme, seul l'éditeur étant indiqué (et fournissant la préface), cet ouvrage a en fait été produit de 1763 à 1799 par divers éditeurs. Un instantané fascinant d'une grande ville provinciale française, cinq ans seulement avant la révolution. Couverture originale à motifs souples, peinte à la main, avec une reliure cousue. Cette couverture en papier donne l'impression de fleurs sur du papier peint. Il y a une zone de perte sur le bord inférieur (en dessous de l'impression), qui a été remplacée / réparée avec du ruban adhésif d'archivage. Par ailleurs, les couvertures présentent quelques traces d'usure et de froissement. L'intérieur de l'ouvrage est propre et bien rangé. Un peu de noircissement/marquage, mais dans l'ensemble en excellent état. Le livre a pour but de présenter les conditions d'Orléans et de sa province en 1784. Après les préliminaires, il y a une page par mois de l'année, donnant des informations astrologiques et les jours des saints. Quelques-uns ont été biffés à l'encre, sans doute parce qu'ils ont été retirés du calendrier catholique ou parce que le propriétaire de l'almanach ne les a pas aimés. Viennent ensuite les responsables et les officiers de l'église, par nom et par titre. Il s'agit de la cathédrale et des paroisses du diocèse. Les détails concernant les hôpitaux de la région suivent. Viennent ensuite de nombreuses informations sur la vie commerciale de la région. Par exemple, la page sur le vin montre les marchands et les commissionnaires. 240 pages. 12 cm x 6,5 cm.

Additions after 1630 are marked with the date of accession; towns underlined were seats of parlements (sic). Both book and dust jacket are in very good condition. Very small previous owner's name to top of front pastedown. Geoffrey Treasure was a popular history teacher and housemaster at Harrow School. He was the author of several books, mainly about France in the 16th and 17th centuries. 316 pages, including bibliography and index. 225 x 145 mm (8¾ x 5¾ inches).

Saumur: E. Roland. First Edition. An attractive programme for the 1908 Carrousel. The front and rear covers show designs by Grasser, The programme inside, show the name, rank etc of each cavalry officer taking part, and what they are doing during the Carrousel. 4 pages. 320 by 250mm (12½ by 9¾ inches). The covers are a little darkened and marked. small pinhole to one edge. Repaired split to the bottom 3-4 cm of the spine. Internally clean but slightly darkened. A nice piece of ephemeral military / equine history. The Cavalry school at Saumur was established in 1763 to train riders in the military. Legend has it that the Bishop of made the school move to Saumur to bring pain to the Protestant town (after the officers had been too friendly with the local ladies). The regular Carousel is one of the highlights of French Horse riding. The school still exists today, training officers of the tank regiments, and supporting the nearby Cadre Noir, France's elite horse riders.

Une belle pièce d'histoire militaire / équine éphémère. L'école de cavalerie de Saumur a été créée en 1763 pour former les cavaliers à l'armée. La légende veut que l'évêque de Saumur ait fait déménager l'école à Saumur pour faire souffrir la ville protestante (après que les officiers aient été trop amicaux avec les dames locales). Le carrousel régulier est l'un des points forts de l'équitation française. L'école existe toujours aujourd'hui, formant les officiers des régiments de chars et soutenant le Cadre Noir, l'élite des cavaliers français.

Castleford's Chronicle, also known as the Boke of Brute, is a major Middle English verse chronicle attributed to Thomas Castleford. Composed in the early 14th century, it is one of the longest English chronicles of its time, totaling nearly 40,000 lines in eleven books and a prologue. The work survives in a single manuscript, now held at the State and University Library in Göttingen, Germany. The chronicle tells the history of Britain from its legendary origins, beginning with Albina and her sisters and the arrival of Brutus (a foundational myth popularized by Geoffrey of Monmouth), up to the reign of Edward II in the early 14th century.

This is a sammlung of two works. The catechism of the Bishop of Condom, together with the catechism for holy days, Holy Sunday (Easter Sunday) and parish mass. Text in Dutch. Winston Churchill, inserted to the front of the collection, and Roosevelt, which is tipped into the collection - over the top of the printed version of Roosevelt. Blue soft covers with a red title and vignette to the front cover. Tied with cord to left edge. Inside are 13 full page caricatures as follows: Winston Churchill, (This is an original sketch), American Harmonica player Larry Adler, violinist and composer Fritz Kreisler, English journalist Hannen Swaffer, English humorist and novelist A. A collection of sentences and maxims extracted from the work of the famous Arab author Imam Essiyouthi, with a literal translation opposite the Arabic text followed by another word-for-word translation and explanatory notes by François Gadoz. Probably a second issue of the first edition (title page states 1851 but the cover is dated 1852 and shows recently published items on the back cover). There were later printings retaining the 1851 imprint to the title page as late at 1888. This is one of the Algerian printings, as on the colophon, there is the signature of Bernard. Yellow paper covers. These are a little darkened / nicked to the edges, but still sound. Internally clean and tidy but with light to moderate foxing throughout. Abd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr al- Suyūṭī (1445-1505) was the author of many books, mostly religious books about the Islamic faith. 126 pages. 15cm x 9cm.
