This second part includes the important treatise by Eustachii Manfredd (p599-641 and 2 of the plates) entitled 'De novissimis circa fixorum siderum errores observationibus'. This confirmed James Bradley's hypothesis about astronomical phenomena, and together they provided the first evidence of the Earth's movement around the Sun (Ie the first scientific confirmation of Copernicus' work). Errata to June 1754). [vi], 1-509, [i]. pp. Engraved title. Dedication to Pope Benedict XIV, with a rather lovely vignette initial to this. 13 engraved plates including mathematics, natural history and anatomy. All five volumes are in full calf, with gilt titles and decoration to the spines. Each volume is complete (although there were to be later volumes added to this set until 1791). Internally, each volume is in very good condition, with sound binding. Light to moderate foxing to the pages (including the plates). This set belonged to Georges Cuvier, the celebrated French naturalist, and his stamp appears to the title page of each volume. Cuvier is sometimes referred to as the "founding father of Palaeontology" An opponent of early theories of Evolution (long before Darwin's) he believed that the earth went through cyclical creation and periods of extinction. He identified and named Mastodons and other dinosaurs, and postulated that the Earth went through a period where it was dominated by reptiles. Baron Cuvier was was the director of the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris intermittently between the years of 1808 and 1831. Each volume also has the discrete stamp of this museum, further reinforcing the provenance. No further library stamps through volumes.

Antwerp: Guilliam Engelbert Gymnicus, 1689. First edition. A Dutch handbook of epigrams and thoughts for those facing death. Full leather Gilt design to the spine. Label to the spine largely lost. There is rubbing to the edges of the book, but the binding is holding well. Notes and annotations in ink to the front end paper (and rear end paper). Internally clean and tidy, but with a little darkening. Vignettes and capitals by Godfried Maes. A very nice copy of a rare book. The book bears the owner's signature of T.J. Powell, Brecon. This would seem to be the Welsh composer and conductor Thomas James Powell. A little rubbing to the binding, which has been restored. Book is in very good, clean condition, with a touch of foxing to the initial pages.

Although translated from the French, this was the first Edition. A classic analysis of Hindu society. Jean-Antoine Dubois, 1765-1848, French catholic missionary, sailed in 1792 to India where he spent twenty-seven years, serving first in Pondichery, then at Mysore and Mangalore.

Dublin: His Majesty's Stationary Office, by Alexander Thom & Co: 1902. This work, two volumes bound as one, contains both the report, presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of His Majesty, and the evidence behind the report. This latter is much scarcer, and contains transcripts of interviews and fascinating period information about Life in the Dublin Police at the turn of the Nineteenth to Twentieth Centuries. The reports have been bound in a recent blue buckram, with gilt titles. A fascinating piece of history concerning the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC). Report and recommendations from the committee on a claim by the Dublin Metropolitan Police to be placed upon the same footing as regards pay, allowances, &c. as the London Metropolitan Police. Contains extensive comparative information and lists showing differences between the two forces in relation to salaries, allowances, pensions, &c. Good condition. Some staining to front board. Anonymous author & printer. 1649 Conforms to OCLC 70699080. 468 pages. Seems to be first edition but not clear. Claude Saumaise (Salmasius) was a French Humanist (1596-1653). This work is a defense of Charles I, (written shortly after his execution), supporting Absolute Monarchy and the Divine Right of Kings.

[Bound With] MILTON, Joannis [John Milton], Angli Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio Contra Claudii Anonymi, alias Salmasii, Defensionem Regiam. Londini: Typis Du Gardianis, 1652. 192 pages. OCLC 933136975. Second (?) edition of this rebuttal of Saumaise (printed 1651) which was an important work for Milton, establishing his reputation, and celebrated as a victory over Salmasius's writing. The work, written in Latin is noted for its colourful invectives such as a 'dung-hill Frenchman' and indignant attacks on the French scholar. (With thanks for this Pat Marrin!) Wing, M2169.

Binding has leather spine and vellum boards. These are somewhat bowed with age. Spine, with gilt titles and decoration is still attractive, but has a couple of small holes to the binding. Pages are clean and tidy throughout, with just a few foxing spots. Attractive French bookplate to the inside board. All works are 125 by 70mm (5 by 2¾ inches).
