Each edition seems to have differening numbers of engravings, our seems complete and is illustrated with 42 engravings (Mostly Johannot, Raffet, Scheffer, but also Conquy, Ethiou, Gouttiére, Marckl, Martinet, Mauduit, Geoffrey, Pelée, Pigeot, Hopwood, Bertonnier, Vernet & Giroux.) including 21 portraits, and a large folding map of the theatre of war in the last volume at the end. The illustrations are printed onto China paper, and laid onto the sheets. Internally in very good condition, with light to moderate foxing to the pages. It was the first complete history of the French Revolution.

Originally for Ashburton's History of England, it is now held beneath passe partout. The plate is in good, clean fractionally darkened condition. Slightly rough edge where originally bound into the book. Engraving is 23cm x 39cm. Mount is 33cm x 45cm. The scene in which Queen Margaret places a paper crown on the head of the Duke of York is one of the most memorable moments in William Shakespeare's play Henry VI, Part 3. The episode occurs during the Wars of the Roses, a series of dynastic conflicts between the houses of Lancaster and York for the English throne in the 15th century. After the Battle of Wakefield (1460), Richard, Duke of York, is captured by the Lancastrian forces led by Queen Margaret of Anjou. In an act of cruel mockery, Margaret and her allies taunt York for his failed claim to the throne. She places a paper crown on his head, ridiculing his royal ambitions before ordering his execution. "York cannot speak, unless he wear a crown. A crown for York! and, lords, bow low to him: Hold you his hands, whilst I do set it on. (Putting a paper crown on his head) Ay, marry, sir, now looks he like a king!" (Henry VI, Part 3, Act 1, Scene 4).

Originally a sixteenth century portrait, it was reproduced in facsimile in Niel's "Portraits des personnages français les plus célèbres du XVIe siècle" published in 1848. To the bottom centre of the portrait is a small embossed crest. Mainly clean, there is a touch of marking to the sheet only. Now under passe partout. Although this same portrait is given several different names in online searches, this copy has Catherine's name in red ink to the top edge. Image is 33cm x 23cm. Passe partout / sheet is 50cm x 36cm. Jules Niel or Paul-Gabriel-Jules Niel (1800-1872) was a librarian at the Ministry of the Interior. A scarce portrait.

An attractive four volume set, in full leather with profuse gilt decorations to the spine. Title and volume labels to the spine. The boards are in sound condition but with a little rubbing and loss to some parts. Marbled end papers. Internally, the four volumes are in excellent clean condition. Bears the name in each volume of Jean-Frédéric de Montmollin (1740–1812). He was a prominent statesman, industrialist, and community leader from Neuchâtel, Switzerland. This edition is dedicated to the Prince of Orange. Complete with an attractive folding pictorial family tree and folding map of Spain by I.B. Nolin. It's full title was traditionally known as 'History of the Revolutions of Spain from the Destruction of the Empire of the Goths to the Complete and Perfect Reunification of the Kingdoms.' 'The work of Fr. d'Orleans is exactly included in the first, second and third volumes up to page 139. The rest of the third volume up to page 85 of the fourth is by the late Fr. Castleford's Chronicle, also known as the Boke of Brute, is a major Middle English verse chronicle attributed to Thomas Castleford. Composed in the early 14th century, it is one of the longest English chronicles of its time, totaling nearly 40,000 lines in eleven books and a prologue. The work survives in a single manuscript, now held at the State and University Library in Göttingen, Germany. The chronicle tells the history of Britain from its legendary origins, beginning with Albina and her sisters and the arrival of Brutus (a foundational myth popularized by Geoffrey of Monmouth), up to the reign of Edward II in the early 14th century.

London: J. Debrett, 1793. Second edition. A nice copy of this open letter to his constituents, from the political radical Charles James Fox. It argued his radical position and opposition to war with France. Significant here, as France declared war on the United Kingdom six days later. Although this copy seems to lack the half title and a blank, as it begins with the title page, and the next leaf has the signature B, our copy follows the pagination of OCLC 6595972. So we assume that the second edition had no half title. Contents themselves are complete. To the end is a single leaf of advertisements from Debretts, end with a hanging "the" indicating there should be a second leaf (here lacking). Sewn with twine (as with all other copies we have seen). The covers have a little marking and edgewear, but inside, the contents are clean and tidy throughout. [ii], 43, [1]. pages. Charles James Fox, a radical Whig reformer, was first elected for a rotten borough in 1768 whilst he was still underage. London: J. Pitt, C. 1800. C 1800. First edition. A small chapbook. Yellow paper covers, containing 12 songs and three woodcuts. In good condition. It is a rough and ready, disposable item. The yellow title has been printed off centre, and the pages jut out a little. Slight edgewear to the pages, but overall in good, clean condition. Some pages uncut. 16 pages. This collection compiles popular songs performed at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and other public venues during a period when music and song were integral to both theatrical and social life in London. Drury Lane, under the management of figures like David Garrick (1747–1776), was a major centre for theatrical music, including comic opera, interludes, and songs woven into plays and performances. J. Pitts (John Pitts) was a prominent London street ballad printer active from approximately 1765 to 1844. He operated in the Seven Dials district, a well-known center for popular and cheap print production in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Pitts specialized in printing broadsides—single sheets featuring ballads, songs, and topical verses—intended for mass public consumption. 10cm x 7cm. Paris: NP, C1880. An attractive photograph of three pieces of Rococo furniture. Numbered by hand #385 N.D. There is no indication what this means, it could be a furniture seller's reference, or a photo library archive. We suspect the former (the temptation to assume that N.D. is no date should be resisted, as in French this would be S.D.) The photograph has some light creasing and marking to it. The furniture set in the image is in the French Louis XV (Rococo) style, characterized by its ornate carvings, cabriole legs, and shell motifs, all hallmarks of mid-18th-century French decorative arts. 24cm x 29cm.

Catherine Parr was the sixth and final wife of King Henry VIII, known for her intelligence, Protestant sympathies, and influence at court. Bishop Stephen Gardiner was a leading conservative Catholic and a powerful figure in Henry's court, often at odds with the reformist faction that Catherine Parr supported. During the later years of Henry's reign, religious tensions ran high, with conservative and reformist factions vying for influence over the king and the future of the English church. The scene in question dramatises an episode where Bishop Gardiner, intent on arresting Catherine Parr for her reformist views (which some considered heretical), approaches Henry VIII while he is conversing with Catherine in the garden. Gardiner's aim was to seize the queen, likely on charges of heresy, as part of a broader campaign against Protestant sympathizers at court. Henry VIII, however, rebukes Gardiner, protecting Catherine Parr from arrest and making it clear that he would not tolerate such actions against his wife.

The work contains a number of case studies with detailed information on the effects of sterilisation. Original hardback, green cloth with marbled boards. Gilt titles to the spine. Signed by the author to the front end paper (to his cousin Alfred Laurent). The boards are clean and tidy, with a little rubbing to them. Internally, there is a little darkening to the pages. The end papers in particular are rather darkened, and with some closed tears. (It appears that the work has received a later re-bind). Overall in very good condition. 138, [ii]. pages. Milk provided to children from cows, or in bottles, was often contaminated, In 1881, Dr. Fauvel presented findings to the Académie de Médecine showing that most baby bottles examined contained dangerous microbes, contributing to diarrheal diseases and cholera in infants. By 1885, these infections were responsible for the deaths of 20–30% of bottle-fed infants in France. Following the work of Louis Pasteur, German scientist Franz von Soxhlet developed a technique for sterilising milk in 1886. This work was part of the proving to the public and the scientific community that this process was essential for infant health. By the early Twentieth century, sterilisation of infant milk was the norm in France (and in America it became the norm by 1912).

The binding is fractionally tight, but still perfectly readable. Original soft covers are bound in. Internally clean and tidy but slightly darkened. Leiden: Brill, 2011. A study of the population dynamics, family structure, and legal status of publicly-controlled servile workers in Kassite Babylonia. It compares some of the demographic aspects proper to this group with other intensively studied past populations, such as Roman Egypt, Medieval Tuscany, and American slave plantations. It suggests that families, especially those headed by single mothers, acted as a counter measure against population reduction (flight and death) and as a means for the state to control this labour force. André de Székély (born dobai Székely Andor in Hungarian; also known as Andor Székely von Doba in German) was a Hungarian-born painter who became active in France. Contemporary full vellum binding with inked titles to the spine, and the monogram ('HL') and Viscount's coronet of Henry Yelverton, 1st Viscount de Longueville (1664-1704) to the front and rear boards. Vellum is a little darkened, but substantially sound. Woodcut medallion on title with the coat of arms of the 13 cantons and 7 cities, second medallion on leaf 16 verso, showing the oath of the first three confederates (repeated on last leaf verso). Loosely inserted is a hand written sheet, in English, explaining the work, and naming the cantons and states in the medallion. 16 leaves, 562 pp., 12 leaves. First French edition of Josias Simler's (1530-1576) main work, his "Republica Helvetiorum". Until the end of the old Confederation, it was the most popular book on Swiss constitutional law, published one year after the first Latin edition in Zurich in 1576. The handwritten note states that it was translated by the jurist Innocent Gentillet (died in Geneva around 1595). It deals with public, political, and social order. In the first part, Simler offers a history of the confederacies, similar to the chronicles of Stumpf and Tschudi. The second part is a complete and lively presentation of the Swiss Confederation during his own times. Complete. 15cm x 10cm. Henry Yelverton, 1st Viscount de Longueville (1664 -1704) inherited the title of 15th Baron Grey of Ruthin in 1679. He supported William of Orange during his invasion in 1688, and in 1690 was created Viscount de Longueville. He amassed a substantial library which remained in his family until dispersals in the late 18th century.
